minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

I know her because she went to Beadales and we are similar ages. I can’t work out if I like her because she’s a good actress and singer or I’m pissed off that she’s yet another child from a rich family that got all the breaks. Beadales is hellishly expensive. I remember hearing them talking about their school work experience which was done at MTV.

Fab song

However I have this one of her songs Everything I got in pocket which I adore, despite the opening sounding like All Saints. It does get better.

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Oh come on, she was pretty famous for a good while and she is entitled to feel the way she feels

Then again I don't subscribe to the belief that women should STFU and be grateful for their lot.

Nothing to do with her being a woman, it would illicit the same reaction from me whoever someone I'd not heard of for 20 years said this. I find it very funny how almost everything is twisted to being anti-female on this site!
Thewinterofdiscontent · 13/08/2021 11:05

Bedales bloody auto correct.

ChloeDecker · 13/08/2021 11:18

Just been going down memory lane online re Minnie (she is stunning in my opinion and lovely to see a non ‘Californian idea of beautiful’ making it so well in Hollywood ) and came across this movie poster and smiled to myself to see her top billing over James Spader and Josh Brolin, just for the OP! Bryonyshcmyony · 13/08/2021 11:20

@Pucarbuile

Wow, seriously, all of you really don't know who Minnie Driver is? And in her own right, not as Matt Damon's partner?
I know

She was "super famous" actually

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/08/2021 11:23

I want to watch GPB again now

Kolo · 13/08/2021 11:23

@essentialhealing

I've only ever seen her in Good Will Hunting. I assume she did other work?

There's lots of actors that are "famous" but I struggle to think what they've been in like Christian Slater, Dan Akroyd, Rick Moranis. Only seen them once but household names somehow

Now you're taking the piss. Pump up the volume was a classic.
SoupDragon · 13/08/2021 11:24

She may well have been "super famous" enough in the US for it to have been a problem given she usually lives over there

Kolo · 13/08/2021 11:25

@ThursdayLastWeek

I’ve just spent this whole thread think Neve Campbell was Selma Blair.
😂😂😂😂
Dixiechickonhols · 13/08/2021 11:26

She’s a well known actress and a distinctive look I can see she’d be recognised a lot. She’s very good in a film called Beyond the lights as a pushy showbiz mum - Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays her daughter. It’s on Netflix.

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 13/08/2021 11:31

I thought you’d misspelled Mini (as in the car) until I read the thread. It was only then I clicked who you meant…even then I can’t picture her.

idontlikealdi · 13/08/2021 11:32

I don't really do movies but even I know that Minnie driver was super famous for a time in the 90s.

ancientgran · 13/08/2021 11:34

@purpledagger

I think the difficulty is people are confusing Minnie the actress with Minnie the Celebrity.

As an actress, Minnie was well known before GWH, but probably not A-list, but many people would have seen something she was as in. Then, she became a celebrity, due to het relationship with Matt Damon, if you total up all of her magazine covers and column inches, she was super famous at the time. Probably more for her personal life than for her work.

I know who she is and I've got to an age where I haven't got a clue who most "famous" people are. I remember in the 60s finding it hilarious when some high court judge didn't know who The Beatles or The Stones were and now I am that judge (minus his power and income level.)

To be fair to her she has won alot of awards and been nominated for even more so I think she was famous for her personal life and her work.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 13/08/2021 11:34

I think we've got a full house now
Do you mean Mira Sorvino? She was blacklisted due to Harvey Weinsteins false rumours, as was Ashley Judd
We've gone from Minnie Driver to Mena Suvari to Mimi Rogers to Mira Sorvino
And we’ve also learnt that Brad Pitt apparently starred in Titanic
Grin

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 13/08/2021 11:39

Ahhh - Christian Slater. I bloody loved him
You should watch Hard Rain then. Christian Slater stars with Morgan Freeman and, oh who was that woman again? Oh yes, that’s right, Minnie Driver. Grin

ChloeDecker · 13/08/2021 11:42

And we’ve also learnt that Brad Pitt apparently starred in Titanic

I laughed at that!

Interestingly, I did just read this on Wikipedia:

Driver was also considered to play Rose DeWitt Butaker in the 1997 film Titanic, but director James Cameron felt she was too old so Kate Winslet was cast instead

Poor Minnie.

StrawberryPuff · 13/08/2021 11:45

Are you her overshadowed sister or cousin or something? Cos this is an odd axe to grind.

She was flavour of the month for a good while, really had a ubiquitous phase. Definitely famous enough for it to have impacted on her everyday life- people coming up to her, paparazzi etc.

The time she was really famous was also the time magazines like Heat starting featuring lots of unflattering paparazzi shots of people, the tone of the media definitely changed round then.

3Br1tnee · 13/08/2021 11:47

@youshallnotpass9

I googled both of those after I posted, I was wrong I do know who Neve Campbell is, the Scream woman. Wouldn't be able to tell you her name if you were to show me a photo though. Still have no clue who Mena Suvari is though
Ha, I've just googled and I thought Fairuza Balk was Neve Campbell.

I know who minnie driver is though, although I couldn't name something she was in. At a guess, I'd say 4 weddings. But I've seen her in things and could recognise her.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 11:49

Brad Pitt being the door in Titanic has really tickled me GrinGrin

OP as others have said you are NOT the arbiter of fame-levels, there are people older than you who followed celeb culture way before you did any who will know better. I think an attempt at a nasty bitchy thread has fallen flat in its arse and you're trying too hard to justify your bitchiness now

purpledagger · 13/08/2021 11:53

Just realised i confused Mira and Mena!! They don't look like each other, but their names so similar 😂

krustykittens · 13/08/2021 11:53

Love Minnie Driver and yes, as pointed out by others on this thread, she did loads of films and was a well known Hollywood actress. Also, a very good blues singer, she has the most incredible voice. Anyone mentioned Gross Point Blanc? She was brilliant in that as well and I loved her in the TV series, The Riches. She has a very distinct look and I think she would have found the fame intrusive.

MrsBungle · 13/08/2021 11:54

Minnie Driver certainly was very famous in the 90s. Absolutely at the level of fame which probably made aspects of life difficult for her. Who are you to say her experience isn’t real?!

robotcollision · 13/08/2021 11:55

She was famous in her day. She starred in Circle of Friends and then went to Hollywood and she had a very distinctive face with very round puffy cheeks and a pronounced chin so she would have been noticeable out and about, not able to hide behind big sunglasses.

A good friend of mine was 'famous' in 1990s - starred in a soap. You'd probably all say 'who?' if I said her name, but it was impossible going out and about with her. A quick coffee in a cafe or quiet drink in the local was a three hour selfie and autograph endurance test. We once went to the fair and were swarmed by tiny kids who you wouldn't think watched her soap. They'd recognised her from afar. If that's what she got from a UK TV series, I can only imagine the daily hassle Minnie Driver got. It's so intrusive.

krustykittens · 13/08/2021 11:59

Sorry, I see loads of people have mentioned Gross Point Blanc!

Divebar2021 · 13/08/2021 12:04

If you know who Minnie Driver is but don’t know what she’s been in then I’d say she’s achieved a pretty good level of fame. ( and she was VERY famous.). The whole premise of this thread was erroneous and bitchy.
