minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

I think she was very famous in the 90s and she has a very distinctive face, so probably gets recognised more now than other actors of the time who have stepped away from the limelight a bit.

Obviously it does depend what you watched, but I'd definitely say she was more famous than Mena Sevari (sure I've spelt that wrong) or Neve Campbell.

PearlyBird · 23/08/2021 17:41

Of course, the op can post what she wants ad infinitum, and of course others can have a reaction to that

KidneyBeans · 23/08/2021 18:19
@KidneyBeans. For someone who couldn't care less, you sure do write a lot.
One would only need to defend the op, if someone were attacking her. Anyone attacking her for having an opinion many people share should have a look at themselves.

As for what's my point? Maybe I have been too subtle. When you say ”no one has actually linked to an article...its just the ops thread title“, the inevitable inference is you think she's making it up. You might disagree with the op, many have, but it's unfair to accuse her of that. I don't like injustice.

You then went on to make the connection that being in The Times backed up MDs claim that she was super-famous. I was just explaining that Jamie Laing has had the same Times treatment and not super famous. Of course if you're now saying she's just pretty famous, then I can agree with that.

Alicia Vikander, much more famous than Minnie Driver and whose husband is more famous than either of them, was pregnant and then the two of them have been schlepping a baby around for several months and no one even knew. Poor Minnie can't even buy toilet paper. I think Minnie needs to have a chat with Alicia about to avoid the limelight.

And @PearlyBird the op can post as long and as often as she wants to.
Ah you're fighting the injustice of a misinterpreted and entirely factual statement Grin

I wouldn't aim for a career in the justice system if I were you

@Blindering

''This thread has 7 pages of responses of MNetters, the vast majority of which point out that yes Minnie Driver is pretty famous.''

yes ''pretty famous'', that was not disputed. But Minnie claimed she was ''super famous'', there is a difference in fairness as Driver really never was the latter.

Depends on your fame-o-meter I guess

It's not like you can measure it Confused

Blindering · 23/08/2021 20:36

''Obviously it does depend what you watched, but I'd definitely say she was more famous than Mena Sevari (sure I've spelt that wrong) or Neve Campbell.''

I think Campbell was probably very famous in the 90s because she was in Party of 5 which was a very big show in that era as were its stars like Scott Wolf who seemed to be everywhere.

Voicefancier · 23/08/2021 22:04

Oh dear. That comment's a bit limp and disappointing...a bit like Minnie's Driver's career.

Well I guess we can't all be crusaders for 'justice', taking offence at factual statements and correcting others' opinions of celebrity 'fame levels'
🤷‍♀️

I'll just have to do my best to live with my shortcomings

Eh?! Alicia’s pregnancy was announced by a pregnant photo released by them officially, so plenty of people/media knew but obviously due to Covid, it’s much easier to not be seen out and about post birth and (and as soon as they do they are snapped) unless they make another official announcement, so of course it’s not going to be reported on.

Minnie Driver gave birth in normal times not Covid times and therefore, much harder for her to ‘not be seen’ as she was of course still working and was a single parent, so harder to be incognito in the US.

Very strange comparison but I do love that this thread is still going about someone not ‘super famous’ Grin

AryaStarkWolf · 24/08/2021 12:53

She was pretty famous for a period in the 90's tbf maybe not so much nowadays

Blindering · 24/08/2021 14:08

''She was pretty famous for a period in the 90's''

yea she was but the op was pointing out she wasn't super famous but I think the thread has lost direction as people were thinking the op meant she was somebody people had never heard of.

cleckheatonwanderer · 24/08/2021 14:16

She was very well-known in the 90s, perhaps more so in America?

I remember seeing her red carpet looks in all the UK style/beauty magazines at the time, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek etc etc.

Haywirecity · 24/08/2021 14:19

I agree with @KidneyBeans, @Blindering, and @AryaStarkWolf. She was pretty famous. But never super famous.

Blindering · 24/08/2021 14:38

When I think of the 90s I think it was much easier to be famous or even super famous because there was no social media, streaming tv and majority of people in the UK and Ireland had at most 4-6 channels. Cable tv was a luxury and a rarity before around 2008ish in many houses when it became common place.
There was also a limited number of movies released every few weeks in cinemas that generally many people would know whereas today new films are coming in from every angle it appears like Netflix make their own.

So in Britain/Ireland the likes of Anna Friel, Patsy Palmer, Ross Kemp and Martine Mc Cutcheon would have being at a time ''super famous'' as they were in soaps everybody watched.
Generally most people watched the same tv shows back then due to the limited number of channels so even the stars like the kids from Roseanne would have being ''super famous'' back then as everybody watched Roseanne back then if you get me or even the Home and Away stars like Melissa George were at a time ''super famous'' in the 90s as it was a hugely popular show here and Shane and Angel were a big 90s tv couple.
I think whilst Driver might have being famous she was never in any big iconic role in a tv show or film that everybody would have being aware of which why it is disputed that she had super fame. So when I say big iconic role in film from the 90s I mean Rose in Titanic or Demi Moore's role in ghost as they were some of the biggest female roles of the decade and they got the actresses super fame.

BabyLeaf · 24/08/2021 14:43

Your lack of capitalisation made me think you were actually referring to a Mini driver. I had a scenario in my head and everything about a woman who was so well known for driving a mini around her home town she was sick of the attention and changing cars 🤣

BabyLeaf · 24/08/2021 14:43

And no. YANBU. Vaguely heard of her, but that’s it. Doubt she’d get stopped much out and about!

sheenapunk · 24/08/2021 21:28

I think she also went out with Chris Isaak. Good work!

LimeRedBanana · 24/08/2021 21:29

Well, no, probably not, because her period of peak fame was 20 years ago…

I realise I’m late here…

The one thing that I remember about Minnie Driver for is her childish argument with her neighbor in Southern California over property lines (I believe.)
And like a child, she and her children threw paint on his home or garage.
So famous or infamous? What adult does that?

Lookingoutside · 29/09/2021 00:21

‘ this b list actress’

Nice.

She was famous and I think that regardless of whether she was super famous or slightly famous, it was probably a huge pain the arse to her.

Is that ok with you, OP?

Someone who's not super famous, is my guess! 😆

Here we go, putting other women in their place. Try supporting them.

Porridgealert · 29/09/2021 01:21

I don't dislike Minnie Driver. I think she's OK. But she is not and was not super famous. Of course, that's in my opinion. She put that out there not me. I'm not putting her in her place. I'm disagreeing with her. I guess you'd be ok if I disagreed with a male actor, say...Tom Cruise. So if I can say it about a male actor (Tom, you are ultra, super famous), I can say it about a female actor too. I congratulate her for making a career in acting which is a difficult industry, but I don't have to support anyone when they make a comment a disagree with. Man or woman.

Minnie Driver's great, I too love Grosse Pointe Blank, I watched her recently in S2E1 of Modern Love on Netflix, cried my eyes out
