minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

Good will hunting,
Grosse point blank
Circle of friends

Id recognise her. Not A list but definitely B list.

prawntoastie · 13/08/2021 00:19

Scraping Z LIST not a list lol auto correct

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/08/2021 00:19

I have a clearer picture of Minnie Driver in my mind than those other two. I'm in my 50s though.

Doyoumind · 13/08/2021 00:19

What did happen to Neve Campbell and Mena Suvari? Or did they just dare to get older?

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 00:20

''They’re exactly who I’d categorise her with.''

Eh Neve Campbell headlined several big successful movies in the 96-2000 era as did Mena Suvari and she even had a few hits in the 2000s with the American Pies. Minnie Driver was never on their level.

YABU OP. Minnie Driver was super famous at one point. I have no doubt it sucked at the time.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 13/08/2021 00:21

I remember her in Sleepers but nothing else at all!

LimeRedBanana · 13/08/2021 00:21

I don’t know what anyone gains from denying her experience.

Neither… Confused

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 00:21

Is Neve Campbell the Scream woman?

Mena Suvari did American Pie and American beauty.

Hardly legends in their own right!

Minnie Driver stars in a hilarious comedy called high heels and low lifes if anyone manages to catch it

I think they just weren’t that great. Much like some of the male actors of 90s and 00s, whose names we cannot even remember but would remember if the film was on tv.
youshallnotpass9 · 13/08/2021 00:22

I googled both of those after I posted, I was wrong I do know who Neve Campbell is, the Scream woman. Wouldn't be able to tell you her name if you were to show me a photo though. Still have no clue who Mena Suvari is though

Xmasbaby11 · 13/08/2021 00:25

I'm 45 and knew Minnie Driver as a Hollywood actress in the 90s. Yes she was v famous at the time, similar to the other women mentioned.

As well as the other films mentioned she was the lead it The Truth about Cats and Dogs - I think!

This entire thread - that you’ve started - is about our unique, individual perception of people. Grin

My perception - along with others, it seems - is that Minnie is on par with Mena and Neve.

All I remember about Neve is Party of Five, and some second rate C list rom com with Matthew Perry.

Alieninmybody · 13/08/2021 00:25

I can remember her in the early 90s she was quiet well known.
I'll always remember her most in Circle of Friends as I loved the novel.

Let's be fair here, this is her life and she's entitled to remember it back. Just because some random person doesn't realise she was quiet famous/well known doesn't mean it's not true.
Been famous in the early 90s is very different to now, if other actors like Damon, Roberts, Pitt had removed themselves from that lifestyle this could have been a conversation about them too. You're very blinkered OP.

Happyfeet1972 · 13/08/2021 00:25

She was pretty famous for a short length of time and imagine got a lot of press attention after the fall out with Matt Damon.

More recently she was in a US sitcom called Speechless. Not sure how big it was in US but it ran for I think 3 series. Was pretty funny, was played over here on E4 or similar.

CliffsofMohair · 13/08/2021 00:26

She was in Circle of Friends! I loved that film. Colin Firth as an unpleasant creature

Doublestar · 13/08/2021 00:26

She's super annoying. I'm a big John Cusak fan and love Grosse Pointe Blank but the scenes with her really get up my nose. There's a bit where she puts on an awful Yorkshire (I think it's supposed to be Yorkshire) accent and it's just CRINGE.
I also saw some American sitcom she was in recently and it made me cringe.
As you were..

Budsaway · 13/08/2021 00:26

I'm your age op and would recognise Minnie Driver if I met her in the street. She was in a TV show that was airing in the past few years. I had to Google Neve and it looks like Mena has only done low budget horror movies of late. I only know Mena from American Beauty. She isn't Angelina Jolie famous but she is certainly a recognisable celeb.

I couldn't tell you who Mena Suvari was. I have heard of Neve Campbell but couldn't tell you from where But I do know of Minnie Driver and can tell you quite a few things that she was in.

It all depends on what you watch.

Garriet · 13/08/2021 00:28

@Balgoresboy

But when I think of ''well known for a short time in the 90s'' I think Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell who were everywhere for a stint before vanishing, but not Minnie Driver.
Maybe it’s that I’m ten years older than you but I definitely remember a similar period of time when Minnie Driver was regularly in celebrity news and in well known movies. This was before the other two you mention - they were around later in the 90s.

I don’t think she was ever super famous but she was certainly talked about, at that time.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 00:29

''What did happen to Neve Campbell and Mena Suvari? Or did they just dare to get older?''

Na their age didn't have anything to do with it, their careers declined sharply in their 20s, for Suvari hers just bizarrely never took off as people had anticipated.

So for Campbell she had the successful Scream franchise which kept her relevant and in demand during its 4 year run (Scream 4 flopped) but apart from that her other films didn't sell well so after Scream 3 her career floundered.

With Suvari, she had American Beauty and American Pie in 99 and I think people anticipated her to become huge but her career quickly went into decline also which I ever understood. Especially as American Beauty was 1 of the biggest films of the year and her part was big in it.

Yes she had the rest of the American Pies in the 2000s but she was support and that was really all she was famous for.

She was very famous. Loved her in The Riches, can't believe they didn't recommission another serious.

It is not ''my perception'', I am pointing out that Driver never headlined any big films but Campbell did, the Screams were very big in the 90s.

I love Minnie Driver! She’s a great actress & beautiful.

CJsGoldfish · 13/08/2021 00:39

I actually really like her. She has worked steadily, though mostly in the US. I enjoyed 'About a Boy' and LOVED Speechless.

I also don't believe most 'headlines' I read, the cynic that I am Smile

I also give her credit for continuing to work despite being past the age of 'relevance' (for most) in that industry.
