minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 00:05

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

I'd never compare Minnie with Neve Campbell or Mena Suvari. She's 10 years older than Mena and was an adult actress playing adults. The other two were in teen movies or playing teenagers.

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/08/2021 07:47

I'm nearly 40 and to me she was very famous - not A list perhaps, but definitely a very well known person who had a lot of media attention.

Does it matter though? She wasn't comfortable with the level of fame she had.

Shirleyphallus · 13/08/2021 07:47

This is such a bizarre thread! She was very famous in the 90s

lottiegarbanzo · 13/08/2021 07:48

I think you've misconstrued her use of the word 'super'. She doesn't mean it as in 'superstar' or 'supermodel' For many Americans, 'super' has become a fairly bland, overused, everyday modifier, meaning something more like 'rather' or 'quite'. 'I was sick of being quite famous'.

A certain type of American speaker is 'super' everything. 'I was super excited' = quite looking forward to going out for the evening. 'I'm super tired' = it's bed time. Now, the word has lost so much power that if, as an actor, you weren't 'super excited' to be working with someone, you'd be being impolite.

MD was very, very famous for a few years though.

Alternista · 13/08/2021 07:49

41 here. No idea who Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell are, but I remember Minnie Driver being absolutely everywhere for a time, and even then her saying she struggled with it. She’s also pretty distinctive looking.

OK for Simone Biles to withdraw from gymnastics events for her mental health but not for Minnie to protect hers?

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 13/08/2021 07:49

Minnie Driver was huge in the 90s - I totally remember wanting to be her. She was as famous as Ben & Matt at the time but obviously they continued their career she seems to have stepped back for whatever reason. Remember this whole 'was Matt Damon's girlfriend' - he wasn't well known before good will hunting but that film brought all of them to world wide attention. Her role in Good Will Hunting is pretty pivotal, you have to love her and root for the relationship for the film to work. Gross point blank is an indie classic. God I loved sleepers when I was younger and I know circle of friends is risible but I loved it.

Listened to a few podcasts with her recently and she comes across as bright, funny and grounded.

Terhou · 13/08/2021 07:50

@Balgoresboy

But when I think of ''well known for a short time in the 90s'' I think Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell who were everywhere for a stint before vanishing, but not Minnie Driver.
But I've never heard of Mena Suvari and suspect I'm mixing Neve Campbell up with someone else, whereas I know exactly who Minnie Driver is.
Starstar7 · 13/08/2021 07:51

I went on holiday to Cornwall and she was staying in the house next door..and we saw her regularly down the local beach.

We knew she was someone famous took a few days to work out who she was.

If you are 35, you were a child in the 90s. Maybe you didn’t notice but a) Minnie Driver was incredibly famous for a period of years, b) “super famous” is not some quantifiable designation anyway and your childhood idea of it is not definitive and c) I don’t know who half the supposed super-famous people named on this thread are because I am 53 and loads of these people have passed me by.
Pipsquiggle · 13/08/2021 07:54

OP I am about 10 years older than you. She was definitely very famous for a period of time.

I think there are different levels of fame - there are extremely famous people who maintain that notoriety for many years e.g. Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise etc but these people are very rare.
Most 'famous' people will have cycles more like Minnie Driver rather than the others I have just mentioned

DappledThings · 13/08/2021 07:55

Such a weird thread. There's no standardised index of how famous someone is. She was a big star for a while as far as I'm concerned but I say that as another one who is early 40s and loves Grosse Pointe Blank. To the extent we named one of the tables at our wedding after it.

I also remember a bit on a chat show (maybe TFI Friday) where she was filmed on Tower Bridge flagging down mini drivers to see if they wanted to talk to Minnie Driver.

anon12345678901 · 13/08/2021 07:55

@AbsolutelyPatsy

agree with comments above, the op is being unnecessarily catty
From what I've read, OP thinks if they don't know a celebrity well, it must mean they aren't a famous celebrity. And has a real attitude about it 🤦🏻‍♀️
chatw0o0 · 13/08/2021 07:57

@phishy

Given you didn’t even know she was in Good Will Hunting, I don’t think your OP counts for much.

And why do your threads have an undercurrent of misogyny? You’re the one who posted the thread saying Prince Andrew shouldn’t be extradited to the USA. What is your problem with women?

In fairness to the OP, she didn't say that about Prince Andrew www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4319874-To-have-being-branded-a-paedophile-supporter?

But in relation to this thread, I would say Minnie Driver is very well known, but not 'top of the pile A list' - but probably was at some point in the mid-90s.

TableFlowerss · 13/08/2021 07:58

@ShitPoetryClub

Is she confusing herself with Minnie Mouse?
🤣😂🤣😂
GreatAuntEmily · 13/08/2021 07:59

She's 50 now - looks great but how many women stay in the limelight as they get older. A handful really.

Weirdwonders · 13/08/2021 08:01

I’m older than you and am telling you, uncategorically, that she was super famous and in the news loads. No ifs, no buts.

AtticusHoysAnus · 13/08/2021 08:02

Hahaha.

Just fuck off into obscurity then, the fact she announced it shows she's still craving for attention.

You're probably right. A bit like now where everything is 'phenomenal', 'incredible' or 'stunning' and I kept reading about things described as such and thinking 'ooh, have to get one of those/go see that' until I realised that people were using those words as synonyms for 'quite nice'.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/08/2021 08:02

Yeah I'm 50and I agree

Porcupineintherough · 13/08/2021 08:02

Bizarre thread. She was very famous, its your memory at fault here not her perception.

Shakespeare79 · 13/08/2021 08:03

Weirdest comment on this thread for me was OP claiming Kate Winslet was unknown before Titanic?! She was definitely not! Everyone knew who she was - she’d already been in Sense and Sensibility and Ken Branagh’s Hamlet. That was a big deal. (Branagh was everywhere in the 90s wasn’t he?!)

Tuppity · 13/08/2021 08:03

Yes she was very famous. A list in the 90s I would say.

DelphiniumTea · 13/08/2021 08:04

Oh come on, she was pretty famous for a good while and she is entitled to feel the way she feels

Yeah, this. I know who she is and what she looks like and what she's done, and there's nobody less interested in slebs than me.

ChloeDecker · 13/08/2021 08:08

I agree with this. Kate was well known before Titanic already (and in addition to S and S/Hamlet, Heavenly Creatures was very much talked about) and was the next big thing due to being in the media/magazines/chat shows constantly.

What a deeply unpleasant comment Hmm
