minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

Oh yes! Grosse point blank too.
I've just googled and circle of friends was out in 95, good will hunting in 97 and gross point blank in 97 so given you would have been 9 and 11 when they came out and they were all 15 rated it's hardly surprising she wasn't on your radar at the time. Your perspective isn't the only one!!

MontysMinions · 13/08/2021 07:24

@Macncheeseballs

He's not particularly famous then
I didn't say he was particularly famous but the OPs rationale is that Minnie Driver can't be that famous as she didn't do enough high profile films.

My point is that Chris O'Donnell was in more 'high profile' and arguably commercially successful films that Minnie Driver in the 90s but I consider her more famous than him

So I don't think a barometer of fame can simply be how many films you were in and how successful they were.

Macncheeseballs · 13/08/2021 07:26

Oh I see, sorry missed that

StarfishAndCoffee123 · 13/08/2021 07:27

She was very famous for a few years. Mainly because of Good Will Hunting.

She tried to launch a music career later on and that kind of flopped. That was the last I heard of her.

I’m 35 and as far as I’m concerned Minnie Driver was very famous.

Exactly, plus GPB was quite dark, what with John Cusack's profession in the film and the violent ending.

I can easily imagine a DM who generally allowed her 11 YO to watch 15 rated films not allowing that one. But I'm surprised such a film buff hasn't seen it but maybe her interests are more mainstream.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 13/08/2021 07:30

She is super famous.

You’re being strangely bitchy about a woman who has done nothing wrong.

BorderlineHappy · 13/08/2021 07:30

I know who she is.And if i saw her in a film i would know its Minnie Driver without having to look it up.

But i do think sometimes actors think they are more famous than what they actually are.And then they do an interview and spout nonsense.

crapbuttrue · 13/08/2021 07:31

@Balgoresboy

But when I think of ''well known for a short time in the 90s'' I think Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell who were everywhere for a stint before vanishing, but not Minnie Driver.
I have no idea who either of these are but I know who Minnie Driver is....
StarfishAndCoffee123 · 13/08/2021 07:32

Also imagine her name being suggested on a baby names thread on here 😂

fatvegan · 13/08/2021 07:34

OP you're saying you're 35 and therefore remember the 90s. You are remembering them from the POV of a child then.

As someone who is 47 and was a teen/early 20s at the time, I'm telling you Minnie Driver was pretty big at the time for a while. her feelings are perfectly valid.

She was everywhere (thought not as much as Julia Ormond at the time)!

Christmasmcchristmasface · 13/08/2021 07:35

I remember her being super annoying in a series with Eddie izzard who I usually love - but it was absolute shite - I remember her name from the 90s but until reading this thread couldn’t have told you anything she was in or who she had dated, but just vaguely aware of the name.

nonono1 · 13/08/2021 07:35

She is super famous.

She is absolutely not super famous.

ChloeDecker · 13/08/2021 07:38

Yeah, I’m in my 40s and Minnie Driver was certainly very famous in the 90s (wasn’t she also engaged to Josh Brolin - Hollywood royalty due to Barbra Streisand and James Brolin - at one time?) and very popular in the US.
Being in one of my favourite films, Grosse Pointe Blank meant she was very much on my radar. The OP has very snidey undertones to this thread, which isn’t really necessary.

mynameiscalypso · 13/08/2021 07:39

Hasn't Mena Suvari recently come out to say that she was addicted to meth (partly as a result of childhood trauma and an abusive relationship)?

Nokyo · 13/08/2021 07:39

Some munsnetters don’t like opening their front door to friends or talking to strangers in queues. If Minnie Driver has similar inclinations then her level of fame would drive her mad.

CurbsideProphet · 13/08/2021 07:41

This thread reminds me of the Dave Gorman joke about celebrity and what comes after A list / B list before you get to Z list.

CreamCabbages · 13/08/2021 07:41

I remember a time when there was lots of media interest in her. She absolutely was really famous for a while. She didn’t make it into the ‘established’ A list in Hollywood, but that’s a very small club.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/08/2021 07:41

Yes, she was VERY VERY famous and immediately recognisable

Grosse Point Blank was HUGE - it was all over the press everywhere, real cult movie

She had major hassles being so famous, there must have been thousands of articles about her

Other British actresses have had the same when they've been thrust into being super famous suddenly - Julia Ormonde (was in a film with Sean Connery - First Knight I think. And Jennifer Ehle - enormously famous for Elizabeth Bennett and went to Hollywood)

I'm also 50's

RampantIvy · 13/08/2021 07:42

I first came across her in Mr Wroe's Virgins in 1993. It was filmed at Quarry Bank Mills in Cheshire.

She has had a pretty successful career:

Lemonsyellow · 13/08/2021 07:44

I think she’s famous, yes, though less famous nowadays. I would recognise her by sight and voice immediately. I wouldn’t recognise Neve Campbell or Meena Suvari at all.

Nokyo · 13/08/2021 07:44

She has also had lots of unpleasant media coverage for being too fat, too funny looking, too ambitious.

bobandhisburgers · 13/08/2021 07:44

@Balgoresboy

''OP your protests about 12 year old you are kind of sweet. We all thought we were so grown up at that age, didn't we?''

no but I was always into films and entertainment. By 12 I had about 140 vcrs, I'd seen every movie- you name it. It was my interest and passion and still is.

Seen every movie....except Grosse Point Blank....
Lovinghannah · 13/08/2021 07:44

@LimeRedBanana

I don’t know what anyone gains from denying her experience.

Neither… Confused

Indeed I remember Minnie Driver from Circle of Friends but have never heard of Mena Suvari and Neve Campbell.
Sunrae28 · 13/08/2021 07:47

I'm 35 and know exactly who she is. I would consider her famous in a supporting actress role. I think her fame status has changed as in she's probably more well known and considered famous in US now as she has appeared in NBC american sitcoms rather than any British programmes so we're just not as used to seeing her on tv . She's in the new cinderella film....
