minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

She's good in Speechless. Very funny.

znaika · 13/08/2021 06:57

Minnie Driver was zeitgeisty. She had a fame that was bigger than her work as she was part of the cultural mood. She was also in Goldeneye, which is a fairly massive movie

boatyardblues · 13/08/2021 06:58

@Doyoumind

What did happen to Neve Campbell and Mena Suvari? Or did they just dare to get older?
There was a long interview in the Times recently with Mena Suvari: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mena-suvari-sexual-abuse-drug-addiction-drove-her-to-the-edge-6d8bdvxhk It was sad reading. She wasn’t in a good place when American Beauty brought her fame and struggled with drugs and exploitative relationships. She seems to have found her peace and a decent bloke now. Has a book out.

@Balgoresboy

''OP your protests about 12 year old you are kind of sweet. We all thought we were so grown up at that age, didn't we?''

no but I was always into films and entertainment. By 12 I had about 140 vcrs, I'd seen every movie- you name it. It was my interest and passion and still is.

You haven’t seen Grosse Pointe Blank though.

This is a weird but weirdly entertaining thread.

@Macncheeseballs

*Chris o donnel?
He was in Scent of A Woman with Al Pachino, was in the famous 90s Muskateers Movie and was 'Robin' in the 90s Batman movies. Also in Circle of Friends with Minnie Driver. I think he now leads one of the NCIS franchises
Macncheeseballs · 13/08/2021 07:04

He's not particularly famous then

Macncheeseballs · 13/08/2021 07:05

You must be pretty famous for your boyfriend to finish with you on Oprah, nice guy

newnortherner111 · 13/08/2021 07:06

Whether or not the claim is true, another example of the overuse of certain words. 'Super', 'amazing', 'literally' for example. You would have thought a literate actress or actor could use language in a better way.

She was in Goldeneye for about 2 minutes singing an off key song. Lol. (She's released an album so obviously a good singer in real life before anyone jumps on me.) Apparently she took the job because she was completely broke and got paid £5000 for a days work. Not jealous at all!
PomRuns · 13/08/2021 07:08

Yes that was an awful to do to someone - really shit.

JulesCobb · 13/08/2021 07:11

What a bizarre thread Grin. You said pages and pages ago, op, that it is not because you're too young to remember the 90’s but id say you are. I’m in my 40’s and would say Minnie Driver was super famous.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 13/08/2021 07:12

She was a huge name in the late 1990s - very popular.

Minnie is 51 now. In the misogynistic world that is the film industry, women can find themselves left on the shelf when they leave behind their youth - yes, a few continue to be popular into middle age and beyond, but many more fade away when they can no longer pass as a 20- something.

It's sad, and a comment on the industry - not on the quality of the actor. If Minnie were male, she'd probably still be getting big film roles.

GoodnightGrandma · 13/08/2021 07:12

I remember her from Circle of Friends, which was a Maeve Binchy book, in the 90’s.

dworky · 13/08/2021 07:12

She was for a while very famous, in America more than here.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 13/08/2021 07:15

Just to put my tuppence in, I would think of Minne Driver as very famous and rather likeable (and gorgeous). I particularly loved her in Grosse Pointe Blank with John and Joan Cusack, and I thought she was fab in High Heels and Low Lives. She was also very funny in an Ab Fab cameo playing herself and absolutely taking the mickey out of herself. I don't know who Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell are. I would definitely say she was famous and was quite a pop culture reference point for a while. Didn't know about the Matt Damon thing. Don't like him much.

Earlydancing · 13/08/2021 07:15

I quite like Matt Damon but when I read that he'd done that, it's sort of put me off him. Why can't people just be respectful to each other?
GreatAuntEmily · 13/08/2021 07:16

The important bit is that the emphasis is on WAS sick of being famous - ie she was sick of being famous in the past, not claiming she is famous now - see articles in papers

lioncitygirl · 13/08/2021 07:16

😂 I didn’t even know it was her in good will hunting.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 13/08/2021 07:17

agree with comments above,
the op is being unnecessarily catty

ThorIsAGod · 13/08/2021 07:20

I'm mid 40s and think she was very famous! I had to google the two female actors you mentioned as didn't know them (and still don't).

Definitely an age thing! She is so recognisable to people my generation

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 13/08/2021 07:21

Minnie Driver was definitely famous in the early -mid 90s. I'm 41 and I remember her very clearly - circle of friends and good will hunting being a couple, you might not agree that she was 'super' famous but she really was a very famous actor for a period. I guess you were just a bit too young to have her on your radar.

ButterflyAway · 13/08/2021 07:21

You can think whatever you want OP, YANBU for that. What you are being unreasonable for is thinking your opinion is worth a damn, or that your opinion of her is the only opinion.

Did you get your fill of being nasty yet?

SquirryTheSquirrel · 13/08/2021 07:21

@GoodnightGrandma

I remember her from Circle of Friends, which was a Maeve Binchy book, in the 90’s.
I remember that. The acting was fine, but the film itself and some of the casting was an absolute travesty. Benny Hogan was supposed to be considerably overweight, so slender Minnie Driver wasn't the right person to play her. And the saccharine ending that ruined the point of the novel - that Benny didn't need shallow Jack to be happy - no, Benny and Jack got together Angry .
phishy · 13/08/2021 07:22

Given you didn’t even know she was in Good Will Hunting, I don’t think your OP counts for much.

And why do your threads have an undercurrent of misogyny? You’re the one who posted the thread saying Prince Andrew shouldn’t be extradited to the USA. What is your problem with women?

spotcheck · 13/08/2021 07:23

OP
Are you US or UK based? In North America, Minnie Driver was pretty famous over there. Front cover of rags, on talk shows that sort of thing. That's pretty famous? There was also a lot of scrutiny because of her relationship with Matt Damon. I think you may be too young or too British to 'see' what she is talking about
