To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now

He's always been a chubby misogynist with questionable.comments to make about his wife but now he has compared a woman's afro hair to the fur on an alpaca. Has the world gone completely bloody mad? How come he still has that job? And, no, the 'I have old fashioned northern Irish charm' act doesn't make up for it. I for one am certainly not feeling charmed! I have no idea how Ruth puts up with him tbh.

I actually watched this live as I was at home this morning. Dr Zoe is stunning and one of the best and engaging speakers so I tuned into it (usually just have it on as background noise).
Hand on heart I think he was clumsy and not racist. That said - I do think he needs to go and he is in a position of responsibility.

Binglebong · 12/08/2021 22:07

I went right off him when he complained during the Manchester bombing that police hadn't provided "a narrative". Better that than giving an inaccurate one!

ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:09

@robbooftheford

This world is getting ridiculouser by the day. He said nothing wrong. BANTER
Trust me, a black woman being on the end of such a comment makes it racist. Unless you know anything about being black (and by this I don't mean you have to be black, but just understanding the experience of a black woman) - then you know nothing.

You know what even taking race out of it - who wants to be referred to as an alpaca? Let's imagine Zoe was white and has a Mohawk, and he said your hair looks like barbed wire - it's still offensive!! The racial undertones just makes it worse.

He's a dickhead.

RobynNora · 12/08/2021 22:09

He needs to go. Eamonn was particularly awful about Meghan Markle too. If it looks racist and sounds racist, it probably is…

@Hugolugo well he's not spoilt that day for me, no. Whether he's spoilt his career, I have no idea. Racism has no place in society but from a quick read through, I'm not convinced this was anything more than clumsy banter.

I'm sure Dr Zoe will speak up if she feels she was racially abused

ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:10

I actually don't think he should lose his job - instead I think he should be educated. But of course that won't happen.

Hugolugo · 12/08/2021 22:11

I think its just as bad, really, if he didn't realise it was racist. It WAS racist and he should be aware of what is and is not on. I'm amazed he managed to hold on after the victim-blaming comment. Perhaps he has something over the itv bosses!! Some compromising photos perhaps. It's a disgrace.

I've heard him say other things that were racist -referring to Meghan Markle as uppity being one of them.

Sorry to derail but how is calling someone uppity racist? The incident the thread relates to was extremely ignorant.

IncessantNameChanger · 12/08/2021 22:13

She has such lovely hair! I'm not sure what the context was but why comment on her hair anyway? Maybe he is just a knob because unless I'm saying something nice about hair, I dont comment.

She has just had a baby too so the last thing a half decent person would say to a hormonal sleep deprived woman is anything less than "you look amazing"

I love her hair.

ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:14

That's the thing. She won't. Because when you're in that position it is very awkward.

I also wouldn't say she was racially abused.

What eamon said was racially insensitive as opposed to abuse.

If you have any idea the mental frustrations and societal judgements a black woman can go through as a result of her hair you wouldn't dare try and call what he said banter.

We wear an Afro, wigs, weaves, straighten it leave it curly and people still feel the need to comment about our hair - we literally cannot win. It's like it's never good enough for society.

Perhaps Zoe should have likened him to a bowling ball and saw his reaction.

Fat idiot.

Don’t agree with his comment, he shouldn’t be saying that. That said I see people comparing eamon and Ruth to Phil and holly.. I’d rather watch eamon abs Ruth although eamon needs to make improvements.
What I find highly amusing is how Ruth likes to tell us every so often that eamon microwaves bacon lol who does that (*prepares to be told off by bacon microwaving Mumsnetters Grin) x

ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:16

@Cam2020 it is a word that was used in slavery times by white southerners in US to describe a black person being above their station.

SunshineCake · 12/08/2021 22:17

Why is his weight relevant ?

I don’t understand this either. How is calling someone uppity racist? Some people are uppity, some aren’t. Race doesn’t come in to it.
ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:20

@SunshineCake

Why is his weight relevant ?
Why is her hair relevant? That's exactly the point he had no place going there.

You don't comment on someone's appearance unless either;

A) they ask for an opinion
B) you are a close friend or family meme we and know it will be well received
C) it's positive

If it falls outside of any of the above then you are rude AF.

Chocolatier9 · 12/08/2021 22:20

It was also banter when he said Michelle Obama was ‘brave’ to wear a certain dress with ‘that arse’.

It was also banter when he said Meghan Markle was ‘uppity’

He’s just an old fashioned guy, bless his cotton socks. How can anyone keep up with what’s considered offensive these days?

Ho merry ho.

firstimemamma · 12/08/2021 22:21

I turned it on today and within 30 seconds he was telling a woman she'd be "sat in a chair her bottom wouldn't fit in to" 🤢 the worst bit was when he tried to back track awkwardly and claimed "no-one's bottom would fit into it". Turned it straight over. Just dire.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 12/08/2021 22:21

@catlover77 someone on the thread has already explained how it is racist to call somebody black uppity.
I usually quite like Eammon, but Shock at the hair comment, really no need.

ttcsucks · 12/08/2021 22:23

Here is why uppity is considered a racist term for anyone struggling to understand the history behind it;

To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now
Hugolugo · 12/08/2021 22:24

SunshineCake he is one of these men who thinks he can pass judgement on the way other people (read women) look and there have been lots of examples of this. Saying he looks like a fat bowling ball is just an observation back at him.

I think I'm angry about this tonight because I'm amazed it is still happening! To actually talk about afro hair and compare it to an animal's fur is appalling. Appalling. Yes he deserves to be called a bowling ball and I dont care, tonight, if it means i am stooping to his level. How dare he. He is not an Adonis and even if he was, it wouldn't give him the right to pass comment on how others look.

I'm no longer surprised by the headline 'Eamonn Holmes has said something stupid again.' He's fairly consistent with ridiculous comments. I do find it very surprising that he holds his current position still. Most people would have been 'cancelled' after one of these types of comment. Yet Eamonn keeps banging them out on a semi regular basis.
