To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now

He's always been a chubby misogynist with questionable.comments to make about his wife but now he has compared a woman's afro hair to the fur on an alpaca. Has the world gone completely bloody mad? How come he still has that job? And, no, the 'I have old fashioned northern Irish charm' act doesn't make up for it. I for one am certainly not feeling charmed! I have no idea how Ruth puts up with him tbh.

They are both vile. But powerful... for now.

Powerful?Confused Are we talking about the same Eamon and Ruth @BustyDusty?GrinGrinGrin

DaisyWaldron · 12/08/2021 23:11

I'm Northern Irish and there are plenty of things that English people say about us that are pretty offensive (jokes about bombs and terrorism, jokes about being stupid, jokes about being alcoholic, jokes about potatoes/the potato famine, comments about glib charm, comments about how strange/horrible/"naughty boy" common Irish names are etc) but commenting that people like Eammon Holmes' accent doesn't fall into that category.

Hugolugo · 12/08/2021 23:14

I mentioned the northern Irish accent because I know that some people find regional accents around the uk charming and the n irish accent is seen to be charming and calming and friendly etc. My initial point was that the charming accent doesn't distract me, or many others, from the fact that he says offensive things that someone in his position, with his reach and the opportunities that come with that, on his money etc should just not be saying.

I also later made a point that Eammon seems to be very personal with his comments to guests so would make a comment to someone, say from n Ireland, about n ireland and possibly it would be offensive, such is his very 'playful' and 'hilarious' and 'non-bullying' 'sorry if you misunderstood my humour, old chum' banter. If he were to read this thread, I hope he would find the bowling ball comment equally as 'funny' as it was meant in the same spirit of 'banter' and if he were to misunderstand me and take it as offensive, I'm sure he would realise I just meant he was a fat old man. Basically.

Black people: "This was really offensive and racist"

White people: "Ah, it's just bantz"

Black people: "Look, this is the explanation of why it is racist"

White people: "That's not racist, it's just a joke"

Little hint - if Black people are telling you that certain comments/phrases/actions are racist, maybe listen to them seeing as they're the ones on the receiving end of it!?

TowandaForever · 12/08/2021 23:20

I thought he'd been separated from his first wife for ages before he met Ruth?

Thought he hadn't got divorced because of his Catholicism?

Whatnext2018 · 12/08/2021 23:20

Can’t believe some of the comments on this thread, no way was he trying to intentionally be racist, it was another silly comment, that he doesn’t stop to think about, no malice behind it.
I personally really like both of them and talk of him having to lose his job is just mean, if there was intent behind the things he said, then yes, I really don’t believe there is.
I know several friends of friends who have met/worked with them and say they are both such lovely, genuine people.
Phil & Holly are a very different story.
I feel sorry for them as they’re likely upset by this tonight

toocold54 · 12/08/2021 23:25

I don’t watch this morning very often but I’ve seen Dr Zoe with her natural heir several times on the show and he’s never commented on it so he obviously doesn’t think she normally looks like a llama.
Similar to if someone had a mohawk you could say they looked like a peacock.

Black people have to deal with subliminal racism all the time regarding their hair so it is ok if someone is offended by his comment and he has rightly apologised.
But I don’t think it was malicious and I don’t think he should be sacked over it. I was unaware that ‘uppity’ was racist too, so I think there’s a big difference between intentionally being racist or deeming and saying words maliciously.

Themeparklover · 12/08/2021 23:25

I have to agree I always find him quite awkward to watch and Ruth is far more engaging , I think he should probably step down soon and Ruth move to loose women or similar

PicsInRed · 12/08/2021 23:29

I feel sorry for the professional woman who suffered racist "bantz" on live tv with a direct comparison of her appearance to an alpaca.

Isn't it instructive how people are empathising with Eamon, Ruth, even peripheral figures such as Phil and Holly, but not at all for the Dr who was the actual victim today? 🤔

Cocopogo · 12/08/2021 23:30

Agree he should have been sacked ages ago. It’s irrelevant whether there was internet or not as someone in his position/power to reach so many should not be so inept. If I was so crap at my job, despite my good intentions, I’d be fired and rightly so.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 12/08/2021 23:30

I think his comments were completely unacceptable and it is just me or is he ALWAYS interrupting Ruth? He also comes across as quite judgemental whenever they are interviewing people on the show. I think he has had his day and it’s time he steps down.

mustlovegin · 12/08/2021 23:31

He has apologised. These constant requests for cancelling people are worrying, frankly

RobynNora · 12/08/2021 23:32

@Whatnext2018 I’d like to believe that but there have now been too many malicious comments about black women. Why does he keep attacking black women? Racism.

Banter is a poor excuse and if he’s not aware of the power dynamics of an extremely wealthy white man criticising a black woman’s hair (to the point where she’s so uncomfortable she must tell him) then I don’t believe he’s a good man in any case, If he’s unaware of the politics surrounding black women’s hair, he must be living under a rock or extremely stupid.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 12/08/2021 23:32

How could he have possibly have thought this was acceptable?

Sparklingbrook · 12/08/2021 23:33

He’s apologised but he doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes. So he’ll be apologising about something else soon.
workshy44 · 12/08/2021 23:33

Whatever way you look at it what he said was outrageous, it was deeply offensive. Whether he should lose his job and be “cancelled” is another matter really. To take away someone’s livelihood is a big deal and shouldn’t be done lightly imo.

Whatnext2018 · 12/08/2021 23:33

@RobynNora What malicious comments has he made? You can truly, hand on heart, believe he was intentionally being racist?
Wow.

Hugolugo · 12/08/2021 23:34

Unaware you are saying racist and offensive things = smacks of institutionalised racism.

Eammon has had his day, week, year and decade and now seems really out of touch.

OP posts:
BrozTito · 12/08/2021 23:35

People are still trying to say this isnt racist? Its basic stuff which we did training on in my minimum wage job. The racist shit on here just gets worse. Eammon has always been a moron. See also his 5G comments.

He has other sources of income like the awful adverts. He’s only covering TM for a few weeks. It’s not his livelihood.
BrozTito · 12/08/2021 23:35

Ew. "BANTER''.

PicsInRed · 12/08/2021 23:37

@mustlovegin

Sure, a real apology, with some insight and a commitment to learn, for a one off incident of true ignorance, maybe.

But he's a repeat offender with a bullshit apology, remorseful only at being called out, and this isn't cancel culture, this is an employee long overdue for being fired for misconduct in the office and bringing his employer into disrepute.

Whatnext2018 · 12/08/2021 23:37

I watched it and found it awkward, but didn’t even think of it in a racist way, just that he was being awkward like he is a fair amount about someone’s appearance. I didn’t even see the racist element, does that make me racist too?
It’s a scary world we’re living in now, frightened to do or say anything.

Making racists comments on prime time tv is the big deal and shouldn't be taken lightly
SaharaFlower · 12/08/2021 23:39

@hugolugo : Regarding Boris Johnson's hair, I have seen animal comparisons.
