To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now

He's always been a chubby misogynist with questionable.comments to make about his wife but now he has compared a woman's afro hair to the fur on an alpaca. Has the world gone completely bloody mad? How come he still has that job? And, no, the 'I have old fashioned northern Irish charm' act doesn't make up for it. I for one am certainly not feeling charmed! I have no idea how Ruth puts up with him tbh.

Google suggests that uppity is originally from American English. So any use in British English would apoear to have been appropriated from Americans if this is correct. It is a strange old fashioned word to use. I think until this thread I could count on one hand the times I have heard it used.

LimitIsUp · 13/08/2021 14:02

He may not have intended racism, but it was nevertheless racism - unwitting or otherwise. He has made other ill considered remarks (as referenced on this thread) If he can't get to grips with current socially mores and opinions, he needs to retire

LimitIsUp · 13/08/2021 14:07
@Cam2020 it is a word that was used in slavery times by white southerners in US to describe a black person being above their station.
I think the vast majority of people would not be aware of the origins of that word ('uppity') but thank you for sharing that - it's good to learn

PollyPepper · 13/08/2021 14:15

@PercyPigAndMe

Not aware of these comments or the context but just to add another view .. I met Eamonn some years ago at a specific award ceremony. And he was absolutely lovely. Genuinely interested in the people receiving the awards, wanting to know the ins and outs of it all and staying well over his allotted time as he wanted to talk to everyone. And nope, this wasn't something he was paid for and wasn't televised or anything

So I can only speak as I found him. And I found him genuinely nice.

Well I worked with him for three years and he was an absolute prick scuttles off

@Nicolastuffedone

What’s Dr Zoe saying about it?
Her comment about "don't touch my hair" should have indicated to you exactly how she felt. Perfect response. Those who understood her knew what she meant. Those who didn't, I font think they should bother if they can't Google why she would say that. She meant it either metaphorically or physically or politically. All apply. Don't touch a black woman's hair. I
Whatnext2018 · 13/08/2021 14:25

@Christinayangtwistedsister Are you implying I’m racist too?!

I honestly believe it was his clumsy, thoughtless humour and had no malice behind it and definitely not of a racist nature.

Don’t forget, if they take them off air, which would be a shame imo, we’d be stuck with P & H, both awful people, not nice at all, R & E are genuine, good people, seems unfair.

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2021 14:36

I don't see how H&P are any more awful than E&R TBH. But I don't know any of them personally.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 13/08/2021 14:37

He is clumsy and thoughtless but he’s also arrogant and speaks over people, he is quite an entitled man and I don’t think any of those are excuses for what he said. There was no need to mention her hair let alone call it what he did. There is no defence. Certainly not banter, too many people cover their racist remarks with ‘banter’ and ‘jokes’ because they are too thick to actually have a laugh without it being at other peoples expense. He should go, allowing him to stay is basically saying it’s ok to make thoughtless racist comments because it’s banter or a joke.

MeadowBrown · 13/08/2021 14:38

I have been educated, never fear. So I don't really understand why you're taking issue with me over this. I never use the word uppity in general parlance anyway!

I wasn't taking issue with you, I promise EnidSpyton I was putting forward a different pov.

And fwiw, I think it is splitting hairs when people say that people living off the profits of slavery isn't as bad as actually having slaves as there was suffering involved in both. But I am no expert.

How do you know that they are genuine, good people???

mustlovegin · 13/08/2021 15:45

Ruth is stunning, articulate, polished, well-mannered, poised and a good presenter. She should definitely be on TV

itsallaboutschmoo · 13/08/2021 16:18

@Clocktopus

Black people: "This was really offensive and racist"

White people: "Ah, it's just bantz"

Black people: "Look, this is the explanation of why it is racist"

White people: "That's not racist, it's just a joke"

Little hint - if Black people are telling you that certain comments/phrases/actions are racist, maybe listen to them seeing as they're the ones on the receiving end of it!?

It's like short sighted racist bingo isn't it:
 • oh but he's really nice. Check
 • he didn't mean it- banter! Check
 • how is [insert term I could've googled] even racist? Check
 • the world's too PC/cancel culture Check
 • Example of how they (a white person) experienced someone commenting on their hair and didn't find it offensive. Check.

Can't believe people don't hear themselves. DP is mixed and deals with comments on her hair ALL the time. Most are innocuous but it's exhausting for her. She doesn't want to discuss how often she washes it, whether she's ever straightened it, what it looked like when she was a baby all the damn time.

littlebilliie · 13/08/2021 16:26

He always seems bored and truculent

Yes! Like he's just doing you a favour even being there, as if it's all a bit below him really.
ttcsucks · 13/08/2021 18:42

Anyone STILL struggling to understand this situation and the issues with it, Dr Zoe has personally responded on her Instagram in the most beautifully worded piece.

I will take the time to post because she sums up the point I think many posters have been trying to make including myself throughout the thread very well, perfectly in fact;

To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now
To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now
To think Eammon Holmes needs to go now
ttcsucks · 13/08/2021 18:43

The rest is here;

Perfect response

MirandaMarple · 13/08/2021 18:48

@Sparklingbrook

Why the need to even comment on another presenter's hair?
Ruth's is a fucking state.
Hugolugo · 13/08/2021 18:49

There we go... dr zoe felt that the comment was a micro aggression and therefore derogatory.

My question remains, and is fortified by her comment: how could eamonn have not known about microaggresssions? How can he not realise how derogatory and offensive these comments are? He's not been living on a farm in rural northern Ireland: he's living in Surrey and meeting people of all backgrounds every day in a job where you are paid to say the right thing and to think on the spot. Where is E's filter? What are his management doing about it? It just has to stop.

Also well done dr zoe for speaking up and giving a proper personal response. This can only change things.

Absolutely perfect response and it's made me laugh Dr Zoe even more than before.

People have no idea how damaging this kind of comment is to a black woman to compare her hair to an animal and want to 'pet' it.

It's worse then calling someone overweight - something which one can actually control and something which people would be up in arms about if an overweight women had been told by Eamon she looks like a whale for example.

People need to LAY OFF black women and our hair and stop asking to touch it.

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2021 18:55

Maybe EH would like to reply to Zoe that he will be refraining from saying things like that in future now he is aware.
But history dictates this is unlikely.

SueSaid · 13/08/2021 19:31

'agree with a PP. This Morning needs a shake up, and I think Eamonn and Ruth have had their day. It's like Richard & Judy, they stayed too long.It's not like they need the money, Ruth is on QVC selling her fashion line a lot.'

Totally agree, this will be the final nail in the coffin. I bet we won't see them covering holidays anymore. Feel sorry for Ruth, like a pp said she seems to be saddled with an Alan partridge type character who really should know better than to make comments like this.
