Housemate who secretly recorded us has been made a lecturer at UK university

I cannot be unreasonable here. I wrote on here about two yrs ago about my housemate who hid a camera in our kitchen. He is now a lecturer at a London uni.

The police were not interested neither was landlady- I didn’t contact university and am now wondering should I?

PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2021 12:16

What do you think the uni will do without any proof?

Catflapkitkat · 12/08/2021 12:19

Why weren't the Police interested?

Bluntness100 · 12/08/2021 12:20

I think you need to give more detail. As right now you wish to contact his employer seems malicious.

Smurfsarethefuture · 12/08/2021 12:20

I don’t know. I don’t suppose they can do anything but I am happy to make a statement. There is something very wrong here. For the record, I spoke to another police man who said that, as the camera was in the kitchen who was a grey area - you are entitled to privacy in certain areas and the kitchen was shared/communal however we should have been told.

You need to let it go, you have no proof and no one will take you seriously. I completely understand where you're coming from though, it's a shit situation and he'll undoubtedly do this again. Hopefully, next time he'll get caught and it will be taken seriously.

Smurfsarethefuture · 12/08/2021 12:22

@Bluntness100

That’s a cynical view but I can imagine it could be used to defend him. I suspect he would admit it as he didn’t seem to think he did anything wrong.

OP posts:
HirplesWithHaggis · 12/08/2021 12:23

Why was he filming the kitchen? Fridge raiders/food thieves? It's a bit odd, but it wasn't the bathroom or bedrooms, I can see why the police had better things to do. What do you want the university to do?

PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2021 12:24

I don’t know. I don’t suppose they can do anything but I am happy to make a statement.

You are a random person walking in off the street with no proof at all. What realistically do you think you will achieve here? You’ll look like a bitter ex with a grudge.

I agree you need to let this go.

Smurfsarethefuture · 12/08/2021 12:24

@Smurfsarethefuture

I can do that. I feel guilty/angry as though I should be more responsible as this is so wrong.

OP posts:
Smurfsarethefuture · 12/08/2021 12:25

@PurpleDaisies

Not random. Were housemates.

Bit shocked at the responses, guys. Very passive, no?

TheSockMonster · 12/08/2021 12:27

I think it’s one of those situations where context is everything. Do you have reason to suspect there was a sexual or otherwise hostile intention behind the camera? Had he done anything else to make you think he might be a threat to you or others?

What I’m trying to say I suppose is that there’s a big difference between someone stupidly putting a camera in a kitchen to try and catch the thief who’s been nicking their biscuits, and someone who is spying on their housemates for other reasons. Neither are acceptable, of course, but one would make me concerned for his students’ safety and likely to contact his employer, and the other not.

RosieGuacamosie · 12/08/2021 12:27

I mean it’s not ideal that he hid a camera in the kitchen, but I don’t think it’s a crime to put cameras in shared, non-private areas?

He should have told you yes, but I think you are being a bit over the top here.

PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2021 12:28

How would the uni know you were an ex housemate? Why would they care about this? As if they are going to open an investigation into something that happened in a private household years ago.

You went to the police. If you wanted to pursue this, that’s where you need to go. It is nothing to do with his employer.

Notanotherusernamenow · 12/08/2021 12:28

We need a bit more context. Was he trying to catch a food thief or film people for his personal sexual interest? I can’t imagine that someone would film a shared kitchen for creep shots, as you would always be dressed, or was he filming upskirt type video?

We could suggest some ways of approaching this, but some more context is needed im afraid.

RosieGuacamosie · 12/08/2021 12:28

Very passive, no?

What? Confused

I'm a bit surprised you didn't inform the University to be honest. I also think there would be more interest from the police now.

I'm not sure what you can now though but I wouldn't want him teaching my children.

Bluntness100 · 12/08/2021 12:29

Why was he recording in thr kitchen? Was someone nicking his stuff?

You seem more focused on wanting to cause him trouble and defending your desire to habe a go rather than actually explain what occured

I mean you do you, but they will think you’re a right nutter

What? Did you actually read the op?

Yes, I think the first responses were quite passive, don’t you?

Passive because they didn’t agree with you?

I have actively thought about the situation and come to the conclusion that you did all you could when it happened.

DeathStare · 12/08/2021 12:31

Why would him being a lecturer be important? I mean, you knew he'd have some job so why is this relevant?

I'm really not sure why any employer would care that a man put a camera in his own (albeit shared) kitchen.

Smurfsarethefuture · 12/08/2021 12:31

I don’t understand a lot of these responses tbh. It was bad enough he was a postgrad student but he is now a pectin a position of responsibility- there’s a huge difference there.

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2021 12:32

Why are you still following his career?
