To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

@TheSkatesOfCoachBombay

I live in Wales, the rain never bothers me. I'm happy to let my child go in the sea in the rain or play in wet sand in a wetsuit, or walking in wellies in the mud collecting leaves or whatever he wants.

Clothes and children can be washed.

I agree with that.
saveforthat · 09/08/2021 23:14

PuppyMonkey is right in my opinion. Of course we would all prefer it dry with sun a bonus but if you do have good quality waterproof clothes and shoes/wellies then you can enjoy any weather. I would draw the line at camping as I need something dry to get back to. Small children love getting wet and muddy

bigbeautybummum · 09/08/2021 23:37

I'd rather be in a drizzly UK than being evacuated from a burning Greek Island. Awful scenes for those poor people.

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 09/08/2021 23:43

Get in there with them, honestly nothing is as cathartic or passive aggressive as booting a load of icy cold sea water in to a child's face that as annoyed you since 6am and they've just done it to you 🤣

Same for muddy puddles, jump in hard, maximum splash for mud speckled faces. They love it!

But yes everyone is different .

CoffeeRunner · 09/08/2021 23:48

I'd rather be on holiday in the rain than at home in the rain with no work, no school etc.

Providing we're in solid accommodation that is. No tents or teepee.

notyourrealaunty · 09/08/2021 23:57

I feel frustrated that this happens so much during the main school holidays and wish they were earlier in England (as they are in Scotland) because invariably the weather is better then, more sun, less rain and lighter later in the evening. I wish they started in the third week of June rather than a month later

We in a northern seaside resort town it’s going to be sunny and early twenties for rest of our stay. I went to a gorgeous spa hotel yesterday we eating out a lot with our teens. Both our teens yesterday said what a great time they are having. We had low expectations of this holiday and wanted to go to Athens then Greek island hopping - actually we are pleased we are here now.

MarshaBradyo · 10/08/2021 07:19

I’m the opposite to some pp

I’m fine with British climate in every day life. I like the seasons, the greenery, the rain doesn’t get to me really but I love hot weather in London.

But for holidays I prefer a change and sunshine / warmth / hot

Coasterfan · 10/08/2021 12:49

We are at Alton Towers and its lovely and sunny. Not a holiday just a day out. We always go away first two weeks of august in the U.K. and weather is usually a mixed bag never constant rain and usually plenty of beach days. We are camping in Devon next week watch it rain all week now!!

Pigeonpocket · 10/08/2021 13:32

Thank you. This what I was thinking when I saw those posts. I can sit inside being cozy and playing board games in the winter in my own house for free. Why would I shell out and travel somewhere else to sit in playing board games everyday in the summer?

Depends how nice your house is, doesn't it? I find doing those things on holiday in a nice cottage in the middle of nowhere with no other responsibilities to be far preferable to doing them cooped up in a small flat in the city when I also have a million other things to do.

PeacheyPeach · 10/08/2021 15:38

This is how I'm feeling. We are going away next week and I just cant get myself excited. I feel so bad that I'm not looking forward to it. I have visions of us just dodging the rain and lots of wet clothes to sort out. It really isn't going to feel like a holiday and I hate myself for sounding so selfish 😢 all I went to do is get on a plane feel the sun on my bones drink rose in the evenings and feel like I'm having a break ! DH has said this week he doesn't even want to think about going abroad because of the risks and paper work involved for the next couple of years and I'm miserable about it 😢😂

CaveMum · 10/08/2021 15:43

We’ve just got back from Barafundle Bay (South Wales) beach and it was glorious! We arrived at 9.30am and were one of only 3 families on the whole beach, it was a lot busier when we left but it’s been almost totally clear blue skies with a gentle breeze all day - utterly gorgeous!

ChocolateCakeYum · 10/08/2021 15:59

We managed to get away last month (Northumberland) as ds broke up from school the 2nd week of July. It was right in the middle of the nice weather. We did a ton of outdoor activities. I’m not sure we would’ve enjoyed our holiday half as much as we did if we’d have gone anywhere this month as it’s been raining nonstop. Urgh.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/08/2021 16:28

Where is it raining non stop? I’m really bemused.

It’s been hot and sunny here again today..,

Had three days with quite a lot of heavy rain where I am in Scotland. It's gorgeous today though, and think it will be for most this week.

Don't feel sorry for me .. Cornwall here and it's sunny !

To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now
anon666 · 10/08/2021 17:24

YANBU but - the weather is often very unpredictable, very localised and can outperform the forecasts. We were on the Dorset coast and we hardly got rained on compared to the forecasts.

I think it's better to make the best of it and enjoy the break from the norm.

jp83 · 10/08/2021 17:28

Here in Greece we would kill for some rain right now, honestly.

Pliudev · 10/08/2021 17:30

Lovely day in Cornwall. Isn't all this moaning about holidaying in the UK getting a bit boring?

EverybodyIsInteresting · 10/08/2021 17:30

I can imagine. I hope you get some soon.

People love to complain about rain, but without it our country wouldn't be nearly so green and scenic.

sc0nes4t · 10/08/2021 17:31

We were in East Fife last week, the weather forecast was pretty grim but we had daily sunshine (some heavy showers on Friday but even then nowhere near as bad as forecast), ate outside every day, paddled in the (admittedly cold) North Sea and all in all had a fabulous time. The forecasts aren't always accurate. My main gripe with UK Holidays is that you have to pack for every eventuality!

snoopiij · 10/08/2021 17:35

i won't go anywhere in the uk on holiday it's so expensive and the weather means you have to spend more to fill your days up, going abroad means hot weather and a pool and probably spending less money, it would be my nightmare to holiday in the uk

Lesina · 10/08/2021 17:37

Its not raining everywhere, we are on the North Yorkshire Coast and have 4 days of brilliant weather; it could change in a heartbeat but so far so good. It has been glorious.

Staffy1 · 10/08/2021 17:40

YABU. I feel sorry for us who usually have a British holiday as a foreign one is out of the question with family situation, but haven’t been able to for two years and probably won’t be able to have the same sort of holiday for quite some time as there are loads more people having “staycations” now.

lannistunut · 10/08/2021 17:44

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
Oh come on! I am pretty robust and own full wet weather gear but no one would say that a beach holiday is as much fun in plastic trousers as when able to wear swimming costumes.

For starters, the sandwiches go all soggy.
