To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I'm just back from a couple of weeks in cornwall with dh and 5 year old dc. We had lots of beach days. Yes some damp days but that was fine, we packed rain clothes. Had a super time!

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2021 21:36

Actually that quote was originated by Billy Connelly, Alfred Wainright, Ranulph Fienes (sp) or just some Norwegian dude - depending on how Google is feeling at the time.Grin

I think sorry for the great British weather is a bit strong. This is Britain - we are used to predictable unpredictable summer weather where it’s as likely a heat wave to a complete thunderstorm flooding washout. It is why we otherwise normally jet overseas for guarantee weather, more exotic adventures of sounds, sights and favours and all for a much better value proposition compared to over priced over rated British staycation because of the pesky virus. Not sorry but British rain does stop play a little and gives a different viewpoint and holiday vibe! British Indian summer on the cards?

Plumtree391 · 09/08/2021 21:45

It rains in Britain, so what. At least it's not cold. I'd rather have rain than the horrific fires that seem to be happening in many countries at the moment.

Not long ago it was boiling hot here and people were complaining about that. No wonder we British have a reputation for talking and moaning about the weather.

IceLace100 · 09/08/2021 21:46

I was in the North York Moors today. Was absolutely glorious!

No I don't "feel sorry" for anyone on holiday in the UK. How ridiculous.

I always enjoyed my holidays in England and had some smashing weather. July is generally better than August. However I don't mind a bit of rain, there are still interesting places to go and things to do.
Plumtree391 · 09/08/2021 21:48

Despite the rain it hasn't been cold here today. More sunshine and no rain is forecast for tomorrow and the rest of the week.

tanqueray10 · 09/08/2021 22:02

We have been in Scotland this week and it’s been great! 1 or 2 showers here and there but generally good. We were on a boat trip yesterday in warm sunshine in a t-shirt ☀️

Darbs76 · 09/08/2021 22:17

I commented a few times this weekend to say I felt sorry for anyone camping. Depends where you are in the country I guess we had very heavy rain and wind. Not camping weather. I always get bad weather weeks in the U.K. so avoid a main holiday in the U.K., I don’t mind a weekend. I priced up U.K. breaks this summer and was horrified so chancing the Balearics instead (as long as they are still amber in the next review which will be just before we go). For me I enjoy relaxing on holiday not being wet and miserable. The weather can make or break a holiday for sure

Lolabray · 09/08/2021 22:18

I agree and said the same to my mum, we cut our holidays short due to torrential rain.

Lolabray · 09/08/2021 22:19

Think I’m going to start saving up for a nice holiday abroad in a few years !

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 09/08/2021 22:19

The family up the road went camping last week, lasted 3 days before giving up and got a parking ticket. They were fuming.

It’s not just the weather it’s the fact a lot of substandard places want ££££ for you to stay there. So we’re not bothering. Staying in London for summer holidays, will do lots of day trips etc and come home to our own stuff and beds. Going abroad for autumn half term for some late sun to make up for this shitty weather.

Haven’t read the thread but I bet it’s full of sun haters who complain when it’s above 22C and love being ‘cozy’.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 09/08/2021 22:20

It is a shame. But we have had rainy weeks in the Canaries and Spain before now

MasterChefz · 09/08/2021 22:22

@Pigeonpocket

What was your nicest U.K. non warm holiday? Out of interest

Before kids, the brecon beacons in October. We had a cottage with a view, woodburner, fancy bath, and in walking distance to a decent pub with a fire. We went on lots of dramatic walks in the rain, and nearly got lost in the fog one day! Then either went back to the pub or the cottage to warm up and eat good food.

With kids, Northumberland in November. Freezing cold, beautiful countryside and coastline, empty beaches for the kids to run around, and nice dark evenings to cuddle up by the fire together. The clouds cleared one night and we went stargazing.

I prefer non-summer holidays. You can plan for rain/cold, there's less crowds, you can walk further without melting in the heat, and fish and chips taste better when they're warming you up.

I bloody hate rain when I'm not on holiday though. The nursery run is shit in the rain, commuting is shit in the rain, and I'm stuck in a poky flat in the city. Rain on holiday doesn't bother me at all and I quite enjoy it just because I'm on holiday and it's fun and it forces you to do things you might not normally do.

This is such a lovely heartwarming post and so very true.

Rainbowshit · 09/08/2021 22:25

Glorious sunshine in the Ayrshire coast today.

BergamotandLime · 09/08/2021 22:25

I live in a v popular tourist area, especially this year, in Scotland. Forecast was for rain today, we spent all day in the garden and I got two loads of washing dry. Don't always believe the forecast!

simbobs · 09/08/2021 22:26

OK in the Lake District at the moment.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 09/08/2021 22:28

At Center Parcs Woburn and it's fine! Couple of showers but nothing severe and from now on it's forecast to be really nice. Odd post to make without checking the forecast...

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2021 22:28

One thing that has always baffled me about the British is our cultural refusal to dress for the weather.

You go to Scandinavia or Iceland and everyone is taught how to layer up. Which layer where amd what materials its made for. And they are really practical about it.

In the uk a night out in Newcastle in December or January tells you all you need to know about our sensibilities and priorities.

Even stuff people think is for weather tends to be fashion clothing rather than genuine outdoor wear.

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2021 22:32

The uk gets people stuck up ben nevis in Tshirt, shorts and flip flops or people hit by lightning on snowdon in the middle of a weather warning for thunder.

Devonish · 09/08/2021 22:32

I'm in Devon and it's a bit shit in the rain. Children want the beach. We've got wetsuits and a cottage but the sun is needed! Hopefully tomorrow and yes, proper warmth next holiday is a definite! So that means abroad.

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 09/08/2021 22:39

I live in Wales, the rain never bothers me. I'm happy to let my child go in the sea in the rain or play in wet sand in a wetsuit, or walking in wellies in the mud collecting leaves or whatever he wants.

Clothes and children can be washed.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 09/08/2021 22:41

‘I don't understand why anyone would pay out to do exactly the same as you would do on a wet week at home.
As in.....stayed inside, read a book, watched TV, played board games etc, did the laundry, cooking etc.
You might as well save your money and stay in your own home.’

Thank you. This what I was thinking when I saw those posts. I can sit inside being cozy and playing board games in the winter in my own house for free. Why would I shell out and travel somewhere else to sit in playing board games everyday in the summer?

Well call me selfish but I want to spend my precious annual leave and hard earned cash doing something that is enjoyable for me, too. And sitting on a beach in the rain watching my children splash around isn’t enjoyable for me.

It's nice to have a change of scene and there are many places to visit that don't require dry weather to enjoy.

I used to enjoy swimming in the rain when I was young.
