To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

i've always been on caravanning holidays, and honestly, even if the weather was absolutely shite, it was nice just to be away from home, and the mundane every day of 'normal' for a week or so.

there was usually something indoors that could be done somewhere, or you'd just put your raincoat on and go schlep around an animal sanctuary, or a mooch around the local tourist shops for a bit.

I can't think of a single holiday where it rained all day, every day.. might have been showers to dodge, or a bit chilly.. but you could go for a walk on the beach, poke around the rock pools.

No-one is saying that the sun doesn't make for a nicer holiday, course it does, but the fun in a holiday, for me personally, was not being at home!

Brittany is really wet!

@DanglingMod

What o dint understand is where you are supposed to go on holiday abroad if you can't bear it too hot (say, above 22) but would like guaranteed dry weather? Spain in the winter or something?

I never go south of England in Europe because it's too hot but, although, I don't mind rain, it might be nice to plan a holiday with guaranteed dry but cool weather.

Canaries at Christmas?
reluctantbrit · 09/08/2021 18:02

Chester/Wales border. We just sat outside on the roof terrace of our cottage.
Earlier today we thought we need to pack the suncream into the backpack.

We had a bit of drizzle for 15 minutes. And? People invented umbrellas and hoods for this.

I love our holiday.

DanglingMod · 09/08/2021 18:03

Yeah, we've done Canaries in Feb a couple of times. It's a good time for us. Then UK, Germany or Scandinavia in the summer works well.

Titsywoo · 09/08/2021 18:15

Well we're going on a road trip on Friday and will be stopping in Norfolk, Leicester, York, Whitby, Newcastle, Lake District, North Wales and Birmingham so I can imagine we will get the full spectrum of weather Grin. Luckily the kids are teens and to be honest after the last year I will be happy to be anywhere apart from here!

mogsrus · 09/08/2021 18:16

it does rain in other countries as well

jasjas1973 · 09/08/2021 18:32

Canaries at Christmas?

Prefer Turkey myself :)

"But I think the thread was about feeling empathy with people who've saved up for their hols and it ends up cold, wet and windy wasn't it?"

Not according to the title, no.

There's worse than a bit of rain, no one will melt! Put on a raincoat and wellies!

Took the kids for an outdoor day out yesterday in the rain and they loved it. It's adults that are precious about this.

Some people are so feeble.

That's not the point. Anyone can go out in wellies and spend the day splashing in muddy puddles FFS. What normal people want to do is to be able to sit outside of an evening, having dinner or drinks. Or enjoying the beach. Or a million other things that you can't enjoy while it's raining.

We do that all the time, at home. When I go on holiday I want to do stuff I actually enjoy.

Pigeonpocket · 09/08/2021 19:45

What was your nicest U.K. non warm holiday? Out of interest

Before kids, the brecon beacons in October. We had a cottage with a view, woodburner, fancy bath, and in walking distance to a decent pub with a fire. We went on lots of dramatic walks in the rain, and nearly got lost in the fog one day! Then either went back to the pub or the cottage to warm up and eat good food.

With kids, Northumberland in November. Freezing cold, beautiful countryside and coastline, empty beaches for the kids to run around, and nice dark evenings to cuddle up by the fire together. The clouds cleared one night and we went stargazing.

I prefer non-summer holidays. You can plan for rain/cold, there's less crowds, you can walk further without melting in the heat, and fish and chips taste better when they're warming you up.

I bloody hate rain when I'm not on holiday though. The nursery run is shit in the rain, commuting is shit in the rain, and I'm stuck in a poky flat in the city. Rain on holiday doesn't bother me at all and I quite enjoy it just because I'm on holiday and it's fun and it forces you to do things you might not normally do.

I have to say I find this entire thread the equivalent of going to Spain and then complaining about people speaking spanish and serving spanish food.

This also reminded me the worst rain we’ve ever experienced on holiday was in Spain.

BoredZelda · 09/08/2021 19:58

I don’t want to do that, doesn’t make me not normal.

I'm in Scotland. I've experienced rain in Spain (not on the plain) that's pretty much on a par with the heaviest I've experienced here.

Still had a great holiday though.

The week after we got back, the resort we were in was flooded, due to heavy rain. It might not have been quite so great had we gone that week instead...

Those who but for the virus and the incompetent government response could have been on a holiday visiting family abroad have my sympathy more than anyone else.

We’re visiting our family abroad tomorrow! Haven’t seen them since December 2019. Can’t wait.

Tbh I’m locked out of own country more to do with their border control than ours.

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
All the reactions to this quote, and not one person has mentioned the originator, the great Billy Connolly 😁

Just come back from 2 weeks in Scotland we had 3 days of rain it was gorgeous.

@Pigeonpocket

YABU. I'd rather be on holiday in this weather than stuck at home in it.

I think some people's definition of holiday is different to mine. If you need sun and warmth to feel like you're on holiday, do you never go away in autumn/winter unless it's to somewhere really far away in a different season to here?

We do sometimes go away in the autumn and/or winter but we know then the weather is likely to be not very warm and possibly rainy.

Going somewhere like London is ideal then as there is so much to do there, lots of it indoors.

We only need to take clothes for cooler weather rather than going in the summer and having to take summer clothes, autumn clothes, jumpers, waterproofs etc. Not easy if you are not going by car.

Also we would probably only go away then for 4 days at most whereas in the summer we like at least a week but preferably two. We don't expect, or want, really hot days but some warm sunny days are nice and the more days without rain (and the seemingly necessary wind that goes with it) the better.

We want to be able to have picnics, sit outside and eat lunch and evening meal (hardly ever warm enough to sit out in the evening though).

A poster said it is unlikely that it would rain heavily all day every day for a week but it definitely does. 2012 we went to Cornwall with our dog and stayed in a caravan. It absolutely poured every day and was windy too (oh joy). We got absolutely soaked every day in a really short time and found it difficult to get dry plus our dog was a hairy one and took hours to dry.

We couldn't eat out because we couldn't find anywhere that would allow us in with a dog and we couldn't sit and eat in torrential rain

We came home early because it was just miserable and shit.

lynsey91 · 09/08/2021 21:16

@TartanCurtains I really wish you hadn't said that it was Billy Connelly that said that bloody stupid annoying phrase.

I think I dislike him now

userxx · 09/08/2021 21:16

@TartanCurtains That quote is written in my local pub beer garden, always makes me chuckle, usually because I'm in the wrong clothes!

FrownedUpon · 09/08/2021 21:26

We’re having a lovely time. Yes the weather has been mixed, but we’ve spent days exploring new countryside, towns & restaurants. Walking & cycling in the forest. We had lunch outside today and spent early evening on our balcony chatting and drinking wine. No complaints at all.
