To think 'The Prince' US cartoon is too much?

I couldn't find a thread about this but - there's a new cartoon series coming out, which is basically a bit like 'Southpark' but with the Royal Family as the focus.

I watched a bit of a taster. It has Prince George at its centre. And Charlotte. It's completely no holds barred and has literally appropriated these real people's,and children's, lives.

I don't care about US 'cool' media and piss-take culture. This is something so appalling to do. The children are under 10. Really, really what gives anyone the right to do that? And what the hell is wrong with Harry, I'm sorry, for having declared open season on his own family? His lead on this has made the way clear for this kind of 'creative' attack.

Worse than anything levelled even at Trump. To an entirely innocent and beautifully brought-up little boy, who is only just 8.

Too much.

It isn’t just about monarchy though.

It is poking fun at children who could possibly be irreparably damaged by being the object of ridicule.

Prince or pauper? It matters not.

Adults who think kids are fair game need to look at themselves. Chelsea Clinton said it far better than me.

doscervesas · 05/08/2021 13:41

They would say it's just deserves because of what their Father has put them through

Would they? I wouldn't.

I don't think any children of famous people should be a target, which is why I objected to the joke about Chelsea Clinton.

eightyfourandahalf · 05/08/2021 14:01

You choose to see it a "poking fun at children", it's your right. It doesn't matter. The show is actually quite funny.

HypocriteHunter · 05/08/2021 14:13

“It's (expletive) creepy that grown old men taking pictures of a baby without their permission.

"I'm sickened, I'm disgusted and I'm respectfully asking everyone to stop following us around and stop trying to take pictures of our daughter and especially printing them

But absolutely fine to voice a cartoon making fun of another child with parents in the public eye though it would seem.

I would respectfully say that it is bordering on creepy, sickening and disgusting to upset another mother by making fun of her kids whilst demanding privacy and distance for your own.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/08/2021 14:27

I don't really like the idea of little kids being involved in a satirical programme. However, OP's blaming of Harry for it is really weird and the grovelling description of George as being beautifully brought up is highly likely to be very inaccurate given the behaviour and attitudes of the rest of the family.

@jozipozi31 😳 It'a bit of a reach to blame this on H&M too. 🥱

If you are blaming this on Harry you are either
  • a closet racist having a go because he married a black woman. Or
  • very very easily led by bullying social media campaigns targeting Harry and his wife.
  • or both
  • or you enjoy scapegoating people

Logically your enjoyment of blaming Harry is irrational at best. Just another voice sticking the boot in with all the others. Which is strange as your original post was about someone being bullied, and you're doing the exact same thing.

Harry is a target in the show you're talking about too btw.

Utterlybutterly8 · 05/08/2021 14:39

Agree that children should be completely off limits.

StoneofDestiny · 05/08/2021 14:43

You want to pick and choose, but it doesn't work that way. When they are sold as public figure who have a right and entitlement to their privileges, then yes, people have a right to make fun of the situation

The parents and the family have hoisted these kids into the public eye from birth, given them titles, set up 'jobs for life' for them, expect deference to them and have been running a privileged apprenticeship for them. No other child has this level of privilege and expectation.

The nonsense round this over privileged bunch of people could stop overnight - just abolish the monarchy.

HypocriteHunter · 05/08/2021 15:49

That is as maybe.

But why should it be ok for adults to make fun of children just because they are who they are?

Would it be ok to make fun of any child? Or just them?

When does it become too far?

DewDew83 · 05/08/2021 16:00

I'm uncomfortable with it but the royals are to blame for continuing to participate in a human zoo.

eightyfourandahalf · 05/08/2021 16:10

HypocriteHunter

you are consistently trying to ignore that it's the MONARCHY that is being laughed at. The "it's only children" card doesn't apply when said children are given prime seats to exceptional events, brought to watch the final of a football match in a suit for example because "heir to the throne".

Even the royals are happy to let the plebs have their little entertainment and ignore them. It's people strangely involved and committed to a family of complete strangers who have issues with it.

LuxOlente · 05/08/2021 16:26

You probably wouldn't have even heard of it if not for the whinging Daily Mail article. "Some actress I've never heard of" - yes, really on the pulse of pop culture, aren't you? Basically quoting directly from the article.

If the Royals don't like it, they can sue with their billions. The rest of us can forget about them and their dreary lives.

Not ignoring it no. As I’ve said, it matters not one jot to me whether the be prince or pauper.

You seem to think it is fine making fun of kids because they were born to it.

I don’t.

And if that comment was for me lux it was an Instagram post. It wasn’t from the mail at all - not that it matters.

We have differing opinions and it is nothing to do with birth and which children it is ok to tease.

It has everything to do with dealing with the aftermath after a child has been teased and decided it is no longer worth living.

That, sadly, has been the only pulse I’ve been worried about. The pop culture one fades into insignificance.

RapidRadish · 05/08/2021 16:54

Have you even watched it? I have, all episodes and it's occasionally amusing. They shoe horn lots of American 'celebs' in it which jars with an English audience but it's fairly innocuous. The portrayal of the DofE is in poor taste given his recent death but it was made whilst he was still alive and in that context is rather amusing if a tad cruel. The George character actually comes across as rather sweet. Kate is portrayed as a drunk who hates William!

StoneofDestiny · 05/08/2021 17:24

a human zoo

That's so what it is - with flag waving crowds piling out to watch them perform. It's cringeworthy.

Well, given what we know about William, it wouldn't surprise me if Kate does hate him. Seems like a chip off the old block.

Still, what an amazing, perfect, self-sacrificing family etc etc.

It's a socially acceptable fairy tale for grown ups. It's super weird.

ginghamstarfish · 05/08/2021 18:39

Not heard of it but it seems a pathetic thing to do... now Harry and Meghan - they're adults and making their own stupid decisions, so I would say if any royal figure is ripe for ridicule it's them, not a small child.

The royals are happy with satire as entertainment for the same reason they used to have court jesters - it's a fig leaf. "We have a sense of humour, we can laugh at ourselves, for we are normal, just like you".

Court jesters never went too far, they couldn't. They were there to make their employers look human.

I actually think satire is probably one of the reasons the UK is still so entrenched in medieval class structures. All the comedians taking the piss make us think we have more agency than we do.

Most European countries booted their spongers out long ago, and the French really knew how to stick it to the man.

All our royals have to put up with is some comedy shows of varying quality. It's hardly the storming of the Bastille.

StoneofDestiny · 05/08/2021 19:29

Oh the sheer irony of the 'insensitivity' of those making fun of the Duke of Edinburgh (now he's dead).
The fact is the Duke of Edinburgh mocked people across the world when he was alive and to people who heard it! He ridiculed people without any hesitation and without a care in the world. In any other 'job' he'd have been sacked - he got away with it because he was 'royal'.

Heaven forbid some non royals copy his 'lack of sensitivity'.

Time to get rid of the whole nonsense of royalty.

WandaVision2 · 05/08/2021 19:35

I hate everything about the royal family and what they stand for. I couldn’t care less about a show taking the piss out of the adult members but the children should be off limits

jozipozi31 · 05/08/2021 23:20

but the children should be off limits

This. Just this will do.

Just watched an episode. What a bag of wank.

Kanaloa · 06/08/2021 07:41

But the children aren’t ‘off limits’ when it comes to special treatment and events. Why are they ‘off limits’ when it comes to being satirised? If they wanted privacy they could have it but they don’t. You can’t be in the public eye only when you’re being complimented and adored, it doesn’t work that way. If you want all the good you need to accept the bad.

Would I want this? No, so I wouldn’t put my kids in that position.
