To think 'The Prince' US cartoon is too much?

I couldn't find a thread about this but - there's a new cartoon series coming out, which is basically a bit like 'Southpark' but with the Royal Family as the focus.

I watched a bit of a taster. It has Prince George at its centre. And Charlotte. It's completely no holds barred and has literally appropriated these real people's,and children's, lives.

I don't care about US 'cool' media and piss-take culture. This is something so appalling to do. The children are under 10. Really, really what gives anyone the right to do that? And what the hell is wrong with Harry, I'm sorry, for having declared open season on his own family? His lead on this has made the way clear for this kind of 'creative' attack.

Worse than anything levelled even at Trump. To an entirely innocent and beautifully brought-up little boy, who is only just 8.

Too much.

@NoviceNewMN

The problem with this cartoon is three fold one it is taking place in 2021 when due to the internet and social media, it's penetration in to society/ social awareness of it will be far higher than any particular form of satire historically.

two it is creating a nasty personality for Prince George. It's more than just general mocking satire. He is portrayed as a nasty, self entitled camp brat.

three Prince George is only 8 years old.

All of this combines to mean that you have an 8 year old boy who will facing a very high social awareness amongst his peers and wider society of a nasty personality created for him. It really is bullying of the worst kind.

It's not a clever satire (of the sort say of Animal Farm) that is merely mocking wealth and privilege/Royal status. It is giving a little boy - who is a real person and actually exists but who as yet has no public 'reputation' in terms of his personality - a nasty fictitious reputation.

That is the big different. Adult satire - such as Spitting Image - generally takes something that is known about the adult and exaggerates it for mocking effect. There in lies the humour. This is totally created and nasty.

It's bullying in my view.

Thank you, @NoviceNewMN 🙏

Just what you said.

This young boy is presented in the most awful way, mercilessly caricatured, and it seems like he's the main focus. They have appropriated his identity and thrown it around like hyenas between them.

For those determined to read my post wrongly and say it's another one blaming Harry: I said he's declared open season on his family, which always leads others to push eagerly past the usual boundaries. I'm not saying this is his fault. He's just been majorly active in exposing his family. And gawd knows what his revelatory books will do next year 🙈

Spitting Image took the mick, but not like this. George is being immortalised as a monster. The power of the cult image that will ensue is such that he'll never escape this. And he's only 8.

Interesting thanks to hear this series was tamed to remove H and M hate.

The series is hate incarnate, really. These are real people.

I don't like Queen-bashing, either. Just call me beautifully brought up 😉

Actually I don't think it's really on to publicly mock and deride anyone ... I know. I'm very boring. So uncool. But I'd rather stick to my instincts of what's ok and what not, and be super uncool.

@Trampolean

It looks disgusting, so fucking weird for a grown man to write a series based on real children. I don't see why it's up to Harry to speak out though, it's more the cesspool that is showbiz that finds these things acceptable and creates a demand for them. His audience on Instagram is smaller than on a mainstream American channel to be fair, and he was vile to all members of the Royal family, not just Harry and Meghan (whose children are notably not in this series, probably as he fears being sued); the Royal family has always been notorious for having a policy on not speaking out, so not sure how them being quiet about some insta posts that wouldn't have been taken down anyway and would have drawn more attention is in the same league as creating a likeness to 3 real children about inappropriate topics. The 'jokes' about the Duke of Edinburgh are fucking horrible too, anyone who has the energy for saying they were treated unfairly should have the same for 3 innocent children who cannot stick up for themselves imo. Adults it's still odd but slightly fairer game.

Sophie Turner who voices Charlotte said just before this was aired that her daughter didn't choose fame so she wanted privacy for her, someone make it make bloody sense. These children didn't choose this life either, they haven't been able to have a say yet, such a hypocrite, as well as Orlando bloom who said the same about his son but voices gerorge.

👍

I think the adults are fair game but the children should be off limits.
Yes, this.

Lol would it be fine if he was a horribly brought up little boy? Honestly I don’t like this sort of thing but ‘calling it out’ would only give them more attention and headlines, like ‘royals call out new programme the Prince.’ A dignified silence is better than anything else here in my opinion.

Kanaloa · 05/08/2021 05:48

I would say as well Orlando bloom and Sophie Turner presumably aren’t putting their kids image out there in the spotlight, whereas the royals very much do.

I find it weird, just shows how far popular entertainment has sunk that's its acceptable and being defended even. I don't see why Harry and meghan should be responsible for saying anything though!

Butchyrestingface · 05/08/2021 10:04

Just watched the trailer. Meh. Can't see what the fuss is about. And they seem to be ripping the pee out of Harry as well.

CouldIhaveaword · 05/08/2021 10:40

I've seen the first two episodes and won't be watching any more. It is not funny. Worse than that, it is boring.

I love Family Guy, Southpark etc and was withholding judgement on the ethics of the subject matter until I had seen it. So shoot me, if it had been really funny, I might have forgiven its inappropriateness. Having said that, the near-death depiction of Philip was too much, even for me.

If it hadn't had so much press, I don't think it would have made it to the screen and I'm surprised that it scraped 40% on rotten tomatoes.

Let it die, because that's what it deserves.

CouldIhaveaword · 05/08/2021 10:45

Just to add, in the episodes that I have seen, Meghan comes out as perfectly normal and reasonable, the depiction of Harry is quite gentle, but the Kate and William characters are brutal.

RonaldMcDonald · 05/08/2021 10:50

Anything ripping the arse out of the BRF is good to for me.
No understanding why they should be treated any better than literally anyone else
Perhaps it will make them reconsider George’s next suited appearance or Kate’s buttoned cosplay outfit. I hope we see William as a spoilt angry dolt.
No idea how MM and HW will appear….Harry as quite thick I hear?
All spot on, more please.

Personally for me it's the fact that it centres around the children with no attempt to change the likeness so its implied yet not blatant, but no.
eightyfourandahalf · 05/08/2021 10:57

If you have to sell your children to the public to justify your privileges and lifestyle, what does it say about you?

My issue isn't with the portrayal of William and Kate though, it's about the children. In both cases they don't have a choice, neither is their fault.
eightyfourandahalf · 05/08/2021 11:03

True the children don't have the choice, but blame the parents.

They are the ones making it acceptable to laugh at the concept of a "royal child" who is growing to rule us Hmm

"Official" engagements at 8? Seriously?

One of the point of the monarchy is for us to take the piss let's be honest.

It all sounds quite unoriginal. Doesn’t it have anything new to add or is it just the same old jokes recycled?

Yes that's what I thought too.

Definitely angled not to fuck off Meghan.

I don't believe she wasn't aware or had a conversation. It's the US. And they are all in the business. It seems like partly a covert PR job for her. Ass licking basically. In case she runs for president. ...... !

The treatment of Kate/W and kids is yes totally brutal. Even Louis.

And is it cool to depict Philip as dead? A living corpse? What?

Horrible. And what I meant about George being well/brought up was that he isn't the monstrous brat as in this caricature. It isn't even funny. It feels so disrespectful to them, just as people. These are not bad people. They seem to be constantly trying to do the right thing and process the reality of their position for good, and to help others.

It feels a vicious and petty attack and totally wrong.

Where does so much hate come from?

against Meghan? I don't know, but do tell us, I've always wondered.

People were nasty to Kate in the first years, but the viciousness against Meghan is on another level.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2021 13:03

OP, you need to get a grip. Meghan has to be involved now, because it's American?

You are clearly determined to blame the existence of a stupid, shite cartoon (that will inevitably be cancelled before it makes one series) on Meghan, yet are absolutely certain that William and Kate are the salt of the earth and just want to help others. Sure they do! This thinking is deranged.

These people do not care about you. Do yourself a favour and stop caring about them.

cinammonbuns · 05/08/2021 13:05

@jozipozi31 what are you on about? Your last post seems absolutely deranged. It’s a conspiracy that Megan is in on according to you even though they initially published a racist trailer which they toned down after public outrage. And they are ass-licking her in case she runs for president….are you on crack?

It’s clear you are a royal obsessed weirdo who hates H&M (before you’d lain i care about them I am equally indifferent to all members of the royal family and believe the institution should be abolished). Your post made me cringe. Do you hear yourself. Just a thinly veiled hate post expressing faux concern.

cinammonbuns · 05/08/2021 13:07

@TheLeadbetterLife Thank you! you said it better than me. To them we are all plebs. You sitting there defending any of them form a low quality cartoon which will probably not see the end of the year is somewhat pathetic. They couldn’t care less about you! Why do you care so much another them?

HypocriteHunter · 05/08/2021 13:29

@SnottyLottie

Indeed.

That clip of the Clintons has it about right.

Public eye or not, kids should be off limits.

And all those saying it is fine would be among the first to start protesting if the local mean girls or boys started a social media campaign about their offspring.

And rightly so. Name calling in the park or at school was bad enough. Poking at kids for the world to see?

Deeply unfair.

eightyfourandahalf · 05/08/2021 13:33

Public eye or not, kids should be off limits.

then campaign for the end of the hereditary Monarchy. Children should be kept out of the public eye - or as much as the children of any elected president or celeb. That can't happen when they are given a "role" and status from birth.
