To think 'The Prince' US cartoon is too much?

I couldn't find a thread about this but - there's a new cartoon series coming out, which is basically a bit like 'Southpark' but with the Royal Family as the focus.

I watched a bit of a taster. It has Prince George at its centre. And Charlotte. It's completely no holds barred and has literally appropriated these real people's,and children's, lives.

I don't care about US 'cool' media and piss-take culture. This is something so appalling to do. The children are under 10. Really, really what gives anyone the right to do that? And what the hell is wrong with Harry, I'm sorry, for having declared open season on his own family? His lead on this has made the way clear for this kind of 'creative' attack.

Worse than anything levelled even at Trump. To an entirely innocent and beautifully brought-up little boy, who is only just 8.

Too much.

The Royals did a deal with the press after Diana’s death that photos of William and Harry would be released on special occasions only such as birthdays or starting school and in exchange the press would leave them alone. They did this because there was a real fear that they were going to be hounded throughout their childhood with paps following them to school, etc. it seems William has also kept to the same agreement but Harry chose not to and chose to live as a private individual. I don’t think this means that it’s open season to mock the children.

Trampolean · 04/08/2021 13:21

@eightyfourandahalf

But that's the agreement they have with the press, they release photos like on his birthday etc to try and keep some privacy. Also if that's how you feel, how is that the children's fault?

where am I blaming the child? I said it was a decision from his parents.

They are not trying to keep privacy when they take the kids to "official" panto, football match and so on.

He's a "normal" child unless it suits them! Releasing a few pics is different. The foreign press releasing candid photos when they are out is a different thing.

We NEED the right to laugh at official figures. That's all we got.

If you think we need the right to laugh at small children then what a sad life you lead. I don't believe they are beyond reproach, adults can stick up for themselves but what's an 8 year old going to do? Shows how low we have sunk that people are arguing that an American bloke approaching middle age has open season on mocking them just because. Ew.
PicsInRed · 04/08/2021 13:23

@HeadNorth

Personally, I blame Harry for absoultely everything. Yes, I include climate change in that. And drug deaths in Scotland. And the immigrant crisis. The ginger bastard.

again, you are missing the point and can't understand the difference between laughing at young children

and mocking the institution.

coodawoodashooda · 04/08/2021 13:26

@eightyfourandahalf

Actually, I have just watched the trailer. You are being entirely ridiculous.

It's so obviously NOT the real children, it's the "royals" side that is being mocked. Being offended on their behalf only makes people wonder if it's actually very close to the mark...Grin

It will be a sad day when no one will even be allowed to laugh at the head of state that they haven't even had a right to chose. MIght as well be in North Korea.

I agree.

I think you're the one that can't to be honest! Its baffling people stick up for this shite.
eightyfourandahalf · 04/08/2021 13:27

It's funny how no one is asking if the kids really wanted their first day to be made public and hounded by paps?

You want to pick and choose, but it doesn't work that way. When they are sold as public figure who have a right and entitlement to their privileges, then yes, people have a right to make fun of the situation.

court jesters were already a thing awhile back, and they could be surprisingly cruel...

To think 'The Prince' US cartoon is too much?
zoeydollie · 04/08/2021 13:27

@Trampolean they only have that agreement with the press because they want to keep the money & status though.
They could choose not to be royals and keep their children out of the limelight. Instead they want the throne.

eightyfourandahalf · 04/08/2021 13:28

Trampolean

don't like it? Don't watch it.
Have an opinion? write about it. It doesn't matter.

I watched a bit of one and no I won't be watching any more thanks. Nasty people like yourself fill your boots though and line his pockets further by mocking children by all means.
Fallsballs · 04/08/2021 13:31

Can’t say I’m bothered and I don’t understand why anyone else is. It’s amazing how much effort and imagination people put into giving a shit about people they do not know.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/08/2021 13:32

Are you employed to do the PR for this show @jozipozi31?

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/08/2021 13:51

It's quite obviously a massively fictionalised portrayal of the royals. No-one in their right mind would think it's in any way based on their real personalities.

The royals don't give two shits about any of us plebs, why waste your time getting wound up about a cartoon in another country on their behalf?

Oh for Gods sake, how does Harry come into this? The bullying of him and his wife has disappeared off the scale. Now you're joining in, blaming him for something he has literally nothing to do with.

That is exactly how bullying works. 'But he did...' 'But he said...' 'But I read...' Whatever issues you have with the TV show do not excuse you from piling in on someone else.

x2boys · 04/08/2021 13:58

@NoviceNewMN

& people saying 'don't watch it' are missing the point. It's not about me or you or anyone individually.

The point is that Prince George's school peers/teachers etc will either watch it or be aware of it and as a consequence he will have to deal with something that no 8 year old should have to deal with that is totally not of his making.

Prince George is in a rather unique position anyway, there are not many eight year olds that will o e day be king are there? Its not like he goes to a bog standard primary school, where is just plain old George is it?
eightyfourandahalf · 04/08/2021 14:08

If you are that worried about a child's mental health, why don't you question his current status and the expectations he's being raised with, and the example he's being given, how the family treats anyone when they disagree with their choice of partner and lifestyle.

God help any heir to the throne who is gay for example.

MrsToothyBitch · 04/08/2021 17:32

You can't blame this on Harry & Meghan. It/something along these lines has been in the works for years- there were hints. A quick perusal of The Prince creators insta will reveal tonnes of photoshopped Prince George snark, going back years. Quite a lot of it aimed at Meghan. Usually on class & taste grounds. He might have scrubbed some of it but he has a big insta following- someone will have screenshots. I highly doubt any of the RF would be onboard.

I have no issue with a royal parody show- Spitting Image, The Windsors etc were great. I do have an issue with it being centred around Prince George in this way. It does seem like picking on a child. Naturally there's interest in him, I think the RF strike a fair balence between giving the press what they want/maintaining an image, getting George used to "kinging" as Edward VIII called it and giving him, Charlotte & Louis as much privacy day to day as possible.

I find it bizarre that an adult been so fixed on a child to such an extent as to make a whole series from this angle. It also seems like a weird, restrictive angle to take and as if it misses the mark on what brits find funny/choose to send up about the RF. I know the RF are viewed differently in America... not sure how well it translates?

MrsToothyBitch · 04/08/2021 17:33

"Balence?" Gah! BALANCE!

Blueskyemily · 04/08/2021 17:37

I think the adults are fair game but the children should be off limits.

MasterBeth · 04/08/2021 17:40

It’s an appalling thing to do to anyone. To take real people with real emotions - especially children - and to subject them to this constant attention just because of an accident of birth. The Royal Family is indeed an outmoded, unwanted institution

eightyfourandahalf · 04/08/2021 17:45

I find it bizarre that an adult been so fixed on a child to such an extent

you should read the fawning of the "fans" completely obsessed with the royals children and who know them intimately from 2 photos published online Confused

It's actually more frightening that the satire!

MrsToothyBitch · 04/08/2021 17:53

@eightyfourandahalf I have seen some fawning accounts! This is someone creating years worth of insta posts based on a projected persona of a child- and getting a tv deal based on it. It just seemed... excessive?

sleeponeday · 04/08/2021 18:02

They're kids. They should be off limits in the same way that Chelsea Clinton, the Obama girls and Baron Trump should have been. No child asks for this. Any of the actors in it who whine when their kids are harassed by paps should take long, hard looks in the mirror.

I think the concept of a royal family is demented in the modern age. I've no issue with the cartoon mocking them - none - if it stuck to adults. But kids should be left alone.

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/08/2021 18:09

I would maybe agree about the kids being off limits if this were supposed to be in any way realistic, but it's quite clearly absurdist nonsense, and every viewer will see it that way. I mean, the kids are talking like adults in it, Stewie Griffin-like.

I think it looks a bit shit (the trailer didn't even raise a smile), but I can't see that it's worth getting offended over on the royals' behalf. It doesn't even really meet the definition of parody, since it's all just made up silliness.

Onesailwait · 04/08/2021 18:23

How can you all be so offended by something you haven't watched?. I enjoyed it, found it very funny. Prince Louis is my favorite so far.
