Live in a seaside town. The Rock point quarter is a new development regenerating my local high street. I live here with children as do many others. Why do they need to see this and what's the message?
I think it's disgusting, my daughter asked why his toothbrush was that colour. Little primary children don't need to see this coming out of their street every day. I'm just disgusted.

@SquirryTheSquirrel

If only there were a way to do an anonymous sad face pic?
Nailed it! 😂
ilovesooty · 03/08/2021 19:55

It's a bit ugly but I can't see what the fuss is about.

Send it to Disney - they don't let anyone use MM's likeness.

It's graffiti, they won't do anything I'm not sure why it's getting repeated or that some are so offended by it but it boardering on peak mumsnet, there are huge pieces in the US that are easier to crack down on that Disney don't give a shit about, you might as well suggest a change.org petition to show how easily offended some are.

WhatsWithAllTheCarrots · 03/08/2021 19:57

I think it is horrid! As a kid it would have given me nightmares. We have a scary shop window on our high street atm (think very creepy Halloween stuff) and I have so far managed to distract my small children whenever we walk past it. But it makes me so cross that it's there and unavoidable! I would be fuming if I were you. I would complain to the local council.

dryasaboner · 03/08/2021 19:58

I can't believe anybody thinks the OP is serious

thecognoscenti · 03/08/2021 19:59

Not everything in life has to be dumbed down and prettified so it's suitable for children FFS.

titchy · 03/08/2021 20:03

You think it's grim that children see cigarettes being smoked..? Gosh. Mainlining heroin I could understand, but smoking? A perfectly legal activity? What is the issue? Sit in a park or shopping centre every Saturday afternoon and they'll see hundreds of people smoking!

Chumleymouse · 03/08/2021 20:07

From the title of the thread I was expecting to see big piles of dog shit on the pavement……… not a picture of a mouse …. 😂

I think it’s good …….. if it was a banksy people would be swooning over it

DoormatBob · 03/08/2021 20:07

I've just read 8 pages of this thread and still don't get it?

Closest I could get is an insult aimed at Wetherspoons stereotypical customer which is more offensive than the image itself.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 03/08/2021 20:08

@Thewinterofdiscontent

So everyone would be happy if their nursery read the children a picture book with this character in? Or would we think a cigarette smoking mouse inappropriate?

It’s a public space not an art gallery. It needs to work for everyone.

Ridiculous straw man argument. No one is planning indoctrinate nursery school children with this.

And fuck art having to work for everyone. There's no such thing as art that works for everyone.

BSideBaby · 03/08/2021 20:11

Not all art is beautiful.

me4real · 03/08/2021 20:12

It's not pretty. I can see why it might creep children out and doesn't give a good message.

You could write to the council @landmarklotto , no harm in trying. I'm sure they'd not want to be seen to encourage children to smoke or get in a fight or something.

thepeopleversuswork · 03/08/2021 20:13

Its ugly as fuck and naff.

But I struggle to see how its offensive, let alone damaging to your children.

As others have said you can't shield children from seeing people smoking or looking down at heel.

I'd just explain that its a bit yuck and -- if you need to - use it to riff on why smoking is a bad idea. And move on.

Macncheeseballs · 03/08/2021 20:13

What is the message behind it

AnImposter · 03/08/2021 20:16

@DoormatBob my understanding is he painted a hero mickey picture and Wetherspoons pressured the council into removing it. So now the artist is depicting mickey is in Wetherspoons prison as a fuck you.

A bit like the Colin caterpillar M&S story maybe.

I think it makes more sense locally if you've followed the story

VodselForDinner · 03/08/2021 20:18

What about that picture do you think will have the OP’s three year old legging it to the corner shop for twenty B&H? If anything, maybe it’s a good opportunity for OP to start speaking to her child, in an age appropriate way, about what a cigarette is and why it’s bad and made the mouse sick?

There’s a sentence I never thought I’d type.

myrtleWilson · 03/08/2021 20:18

@Macncheeseballs

What is the message behind it
Its part of an art project in a regeneration area.

This artist previously used this mickeyscouse image on the side of a building that was attached to a wetherspoons. The local community felt that 'spoons had let the building go into disrepair. 'spoons took umbrage at the mickeyscouse mocking them and got the council to buff the image.

In his work in the regen area, the artist returned to the mickeyscouse image - one was super hero celebrating arrival of an anti super super market and this was the other, Mickey in Wetherspoons jail.

I guess it is celebrating & promoting the need/value of local independent stores at the expense of chain after chain and possibly having a dig at the LA for bending to Wetherspoons demands with the first image.

Givemebackmylilo · 03/08/2021 20:19

Of all the things you could choose to be offended by, this is an odd choice

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2021 20:21

That’s very cool. Good artist, edgy. I can’t see yout issue to be honest.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/08/2021 20:22

You'd have had a fit of you'd seen what my ds and his mates had to walk past to school when he was 5, a massive cock and balls on some old garagesGrin

Rosebel · 03/08/2021 20:24

It's ugly not offensive. Your kids will see worse than that. There is absolutely nothing offensive about it and struggling to see why it's such a problem for you.
Your children have probably barely thought about it.

Macncheeseballs · 03/08/2021 20:27

Well that's exactly it, why do blokes feel the need to draw penises every where, including the one etched into the hillside, the Cerne abbas giant

KidneyBeans · 03/08/2021 20:27

It's a commentary on the all day drinkers that Wetherspoons attracts. It's implying they're toothless old soaks 'locked up' in Spoons.

My guess is it's on the side of a much naicer bar

It's on the side of a soon to be anti-supermarket
