AIBU to feel disgusted walking past this with my children.

Live in a seaside town. The Rock point quarter is a new development regenerating my local high street. I live here with children as do many others. Why do they need to see this and what's the message?
I think it's disgusting, my daughter asked why his toothbrush was that colour. Little primary children don't need to see this coming out of their street every day. I'm just disgusted.

Miffed at how many wouldn't have a problem with it and are like "oh art ".

So you're 'miffed' (annoyed) that other people dare have different opinions to your and actually have their own taste in art. Go move to North Korea OP, then everything can be censored for you Hmm

pictish · 04/08/2021 08:33

I was thinking much the same. Miffed? Really??
Now, as an image it holds no appeal for me…but so what? I don’t expect art to reflect my tastes or take my children into account.
Odd to think it should.

LordOfTheThings · 04/08/2021 08:36

Well it wouldn't offend me, I just think it's a bit shit.

PaulaTrilloe · 04/08/2021 08:47

Mention it to Wetherspoons HQ!

FetchHistory · 04/08/2021 08:54

Is the 'toothbrush' meant to be the cigarette?
I wouldn't mind it tbh. And wouldn't think it was offensive for my toddler to see. Smoking is quite common. It's gritty art, nothing more.

Monday26July · 04/08/2021 08:58

It's not to my taste but I couldn't get het up about it.

I'm struggling a bit to think of what part of seeing this with your 3yo is challenging for you to handle tbh.

'Why is his toothbrush that colour?' 'they come in all kinds of colours don't they!'

and you get on with your day?

LittleGwyneth · 04/08/2021 10:27

'Darling it's not a toothbrush, it's a cigarette. Smoking makes you popular and cool. Don't be so dull.' Job done.

Seriously, you can't expect the entire world to be designed to be appropriate for your child. Unclench. Talk to your kid. Protecting them from everything in childhood will only leave them more vulnerable as adults.

Cornettoninja · 04/08/2021 10:54

Grin @LittleGwyneth

ghostyslovesheets · 04/08/2021 10:58

The Wirral wars are starting here

Let’s hope the OP never takes her kids to Birkenhead market (clutches pearls)

Honestly Op it’s part of the art in the area - not my taste but it doesn’t take away from the rest which is lovely- including the fake Banksy outside my old gaff!

AudacityBaby · 04/08/2021 11:04

I find this notion that we can't have street art unless it's child-friendly because public spaces must work for everyone a really interesting counter to the recent one about playing Peppa Pig in coffee shops, where adults were advised to stay at home if they didn't want to hear children's' cartoons...

OP, I think the art is ugly as anything but you're setting up a rod for your own back if you're going to react like this to anything in public which you think might be upsetting to young children.

CalishataFolkart · 04/08/2021 11:13

@landmarklotto

Well offensive can mean causing someone to feel annoyed. And that's what it does when I walk past it 🤷🏼‍♀️
Can it? I would have thought the word for something that annoys you is “annoying.”

Something causing you to be annoyed/have a negative emotion is not the same as being offensive.

If it were then the law against Being Bloody Stupid could finally be brought in.

FolkyFoxFace · 04/08/2021 11:17

It's in New Brighton isn't it? It's hardly a glorious seaside town these days! 😂 You're telling me your daughter doesn't know what a cigarette is and you live on the Wirral? It's not exactly a haven. I'm over the water in Liverpool and am under no illusions that it's a pretty little city. It's just some graffiti. Well done for what it is, too.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 04/08/2021 11:28

It’s in bad taste and ugly looking but I couldn’t bring myself to get worked up about it tbh.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 04/08/2021 11:38

I don’t get it. It’s rather grim. It’s an eyesore. Not sure that it’s worth worrying about tho?

Mockolate · 04/08/2021 12:01

I've had to read through all 10 pages to try and get an idea why it's offensive and something the kids shouldn't see as was completely baffled!
This?
This is why?!
Because the mouse is smoking?!
For crying out loud lol
Now I know why at the beginning of some programmes there's a warning "may contain tobacco depictions"
me Hmm
Now I know why - because MN will get a fit of the vapours and come over all Maude Flanders like Grin

Greenangeleyes · 04/08/2021 13:06

@Rosehip10

You would never get this in West Kirby.
I'm coming over now with my stencils and spray guns.
WiddlinDiddlin · 04/08/2021 13:35

Not to my taste, I don't mind a bit of quality Mouse parody, but I prefer Jeff Gillettes take on it, far more quality.

For all of you wetting yourselves in glee at the idea that reporting this artist will have the House of Mouse sueing his arse off.. you can forget it, he will be protected by copyright law which does include parody as 'fair use'.

ConstanceGracy · 04/08/2021 13:37

Won’t somebody think of the children!!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 04/08/2021 14:57

The cigarette seems to have been ‘added’ somehow — it’s not in any of the press pics of this work.

I came here expecting something really lewd or directly depicting an illegal activity...

For the record, I hate this artwork too, looks needlessly unpleasant and aggressive.

However, YABU for thinking the outside world ought to be 100% family friendly all the time. Not everything is for you.

judgejudyrocks · 04/08/2021 15:06

There is an ugly villain in every Disney movie - who cares?

judgejudyrocks · 04/08/2021 15:09

This is making me think of that Steve Hughes sketch, about people being offended. He says "Be offended, nothing happens. It's not like you say - I was offended, and when I woke up the next day, I had leprosy!"

PrincessNymeria · 04/08/2021 15:28

"I came here expecting something really lewd or directly depicting an illegal activity..."

^Same. I don't see a problem with it.

DerAlteMann · 04/08/2021 16:36

I agree it's as ugly as fuck but TBH I think you are over-reacting OP.

ItsDinah · 04/08/2021 16:58

It's not a toothbrush or a cigarette ! It's a paint brush. Bad Mickey. He's been painting on walls. Bad, Bad, Mickey. It's bad to paint on walls and the special Wetherspoons' police are after him. These miscreants are rife throughout the UK. I noticed recently that Glasgow's full of artists. They're four foot tall and draw on walls.
