To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

I literally wouldn't think twice about this, as the user or the account owner.

Honestly who gets so worked up about their "recommendations" being slightly different for a few days.

Also people calling it "theft", would you call the police if you found someone using your netflix account without permission? They would laugh at you.

HungryHippo11 · 04/08/2021 05:38

@DufferMum

I would absolutely use it and then plead ignorance if necessary.
It wouldn't be necessary. Who is going to pull them up on it? The account holders don't know who they are, even if they do find that it is being used elsewhere.

@Fiddliestofsticks

Just sign out and sign in with your own. It just seems rude to me. Depending on what subscription they have, they might try to watch at home and not be able to because too many screens are watching at once. They'd hopefully figure it out and log out of all other devices, but I would just log out to help them and sign in with my own.
We were on the other side and this is exactly what happened. I just looked up how to log out of all devices and kicked them out. I did think how cheeky they were, but then we did forget to log out…
boatyardblues · 04/08/2021 06:19

Not only may they be unable to watch at home due to the number of screens in use, your viewing choices will screw up the algorithm on their account if you are interested in different things to them. It can take months to get a Netflix profile back on track once it’s been messed up by someone else’s viewing (voice of bitter experience).

poshme · 04/08/2021 06:19

I left Netflix logged in by mistake in a French holiday cottage.

Noticed when I tried to watch at home the following week and it wouldn't let me.

The only annoying thing was it wouldn't let me log them out while they were actually watching- I had to wait until they'd stopped to log them out after password change.

I was annoyed- but it was my own fault.

Coffeemakesmehappy · 04/08/2021 07:37

If you’re worried, why not email the address on the account, say where you’re staying and that you want to check the account is part of the package as you’ve been using it? If it belongs to previous occupants, it gives them the heads up to log off all devices and change the password.

Just because the email address doesn’t appear to be connected to the cottage owners, it doesn’t mean it isn’t!

brokenbiscuitsx · 04/08/2021 07:42

They’ll know someone has been watching it as the programmes you watched stay in last watched, as soon as they twig they’ll log you out so you might get logged out mid film 🤭

I imagine they’re going to get some different recommendations too

IcedSpice · 04/08/2021 08:10

@Rudeppl

What a cheeky fucker you are. I’d call the police.
Grin yes, just what our overstretched police force need...
Snoozysnoozy · 04/08/2021 08:28

They forgot to log out, basics really. Personally I'd look at their recommendations and start putting on the complete opposite.

mdh2020 · 04/08/2021 08:52

We had this conversation on Sunday with my DS andDiL. They found themselves in the same situation and did use the Netflix, although they could have logged into their own account. However, their 13 year old was adamant that they were stealing and he protested very loudly on Sunday that they shouldn’t have done so.

LittleMissBoss · 04/08/2021 09:06

Whilst in the grand scheme of things it isnt a huge issue and its not actually causing any harm I still wouldnt do it.
Simply because i would still feel guilty about taking advantage and wouldnt want to be seen as taking the piss. Bit of a minor annoyance of mine is someone jumping on something for a free ride because they can. Whilst yes, there are much worse things a person can do, I would wonder how far they would go in taking the piss if they started with this it does make me question their general motives and what they try and get away with next!

LittleMissBoss · 04/08/2021 09:21

Just picking up on a few other posts on this thread suggesting its their fault they should have logged out.
It is this that I dont like really, this view sits very uncomfortable with me, luckily with netflix it will cause no real harm but with this view, what else will people push their luck on and then blame the other person.
It explains to me why I just feel uncomfortable with stuff like this.

NerrSnerr · 04/08/2021 09:45

Imagine the conversation to the police.

'We left our Netflix logged in at a holiday house and the next people are using it, messing up the algorithm'

'Have you logged them out so they can't do it any more?'

'No! I don't want to do that- they must be arrested immediately!!!'

Do people really invest that much time into their Netflix profiles Shock.
ancientgran · 04/08/2021 10:33

I wouldn't worry about my profile, GC aged between 3 and 17 use mine and I get some fun suggestions. I think the netflix algorithm must be very puzzled about what I like.

I sincerely hope not 😂

It's not like you couldn't do a quick google search if you are that desperate for inspiration.

And it might actually broaden your viewing experience if you got some unusual suggestions. I've watched things I wouldn't have chosen as 17 yo GS has watched it and really enjoyed it, Better Call Saul being one example.
Upamountain43 · 04/08/2021 11:07

i would always try and think - how would i feel if the shoe was on the other foot. Would i mind if someone else was using my Netflix.

Of course not - how bloody petty - it would not harm me - i simply would not care unless it meant we were using too many screens at once then i would kick myself up the arse for being a twat and change the password.

hopeishere · 04/08/2021 11:12

I accidentally left us logged in at a holiday place. The next guests then changed our profile names to theirs and used it!! Logged that out pdq!

Now that is cheeky. No wonder you logged them out.
MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 04/08/2021 11:22

Netflix are cracking down on “account sharing” so those saying no harm done wouldn’t be saying that if they’d done the same thing and got banned for violating terms of service.

Don’t be a twat and log out.

Tattleybastard · 04/08/2021 11:28

@Geamhradh

You can do it, sure. It's a saddo twatty thing to do obvs.
Harsh!!

They aren't though. They said they might start to send you an email or a text code to confirm it's you but they haven't done it yet so no one is getting banned any time soon🙄

No but if for example you watch sci fi and documentaries and shows about South American drug lords and then your DP (me) comes along and starts watching Drag Race and Marie Kondo, you’ve got a completely different vibe 🤣

It’s a lot easier just to look at shows you may like if you’re already in the app.

The point was though that’s how they would know.

birdglasspen · 04/08/2021 18:33

I once left myself logged in and when I went to play something myself at home I couldn’t as new guests were using it in holiday house! I could get them logged out but it took a while and ruined my viewing plans! Get your own account, probably get it free on trial then you can cancel after holiday !
