To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

If I went somewhere and Netflix was logged in on the TV then I would assume it is part of the rental, especially if there was no passcode/lock. I have separate accounts for Me, DD and guests on our Netflix and my account has a passlock on it so noone can use it.

If I left Netflix logged in somewhere then I wouldn't give a damn who used it unless/until I couldn't add a new device to my account as I already had the maximum connected, in which case I'd just log out any devices that weren't in my flat.

icedcoffees · 03/08/2021 16:28

Are you sure it's not an account the owners' pay for?

I've stayed in numerous holiday cottages where Netflix (or Prime or whatever) is included in the rental price.

MurielSpriggs · 03/08/2021 16:30

I wouldn't hesitate (but I have dubious moral standards) Grin

Totally this. Most private rentals, especially family friendly ones, will have a Netflix account for guests. I'd assume that's what this is. Haven't been in one for years that didn't. However we have our own anyway because it's dirt cheap

We shared our Disney+ with my BIL, and honestly it's a pain in the arse. He messes up all our series, no one knows who's watched what when, and worse Disney doesn't have the option to restart from beginning once a program was watched, so you have to squint while it rewinds in front of you to avoid spoilers. He also has a penchant for ordering the extra priced exclusive new releases (like Mulan and Black Widow) at $30 a pop and then I have to chase him for days to pay us for it because I know my DH will let it slide - yes, yes, I know I have a DH problem. My patience is wearing very, very thin with the whole situation. I'd probably be a bit more accommodating if he even had some bloody kids who were enjoying it, but no it's just him and his wife... One more pisstake and I'm going to tell him Disney has sent me a notification of multiple log ins against the terms of the agreement and I have to reset everything

quizqueen · 03/08/2021 16:44

I would use it and they should have been careful and logged out themselves.

@AGirlCalledJohnny don't you have separate D+ profiles?

I have D+ and I have my profile, a kids profile for DD and a guest profile. Again my profile has a pass code so nobody can access it except me and the kids/guest profiles can't order any Premiere Access stuff it has to be done through the Main account profile.

I would look at your D+ settings to set them up a separate profile and it would fix all your issues..

NautaOcts · 03/08/2021 17:00

I wouldn’t over think it
It’s there
Use it

Fiddliestofsticks · 03/08/2021 17:00

@AGirlCalledJohnny

Why dont you have separate profiles set up?

Intherightplace · 03/08/2021 17:04

TBH if Netflix "worked" in a holiday let, I'd just assume it was there to be used.

Your mistake was to be so inquisitive Grin

burnoutbabe · 03/08/2021 17:08

It may be like my Amazon set up. I have created profiles for me and parents.
But when they log in via virgin box they don't see the various people, just the main log in. (And no option to change)
So depends how people access it.

DufferMum · 03/08/2021 17:10

I would absolutely use it and then plead ignorance if necessary.

IcedSpice · 03/08/2021 19:01

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

I'm always surprised by how OK people are on MN with people using other people's streaming accounts. This may sounds dramatic to some but I see it as stealing - your using a service someone else paid for without permission. Saying "well they should have logged out", WTF, do you apply that principle to other areas of life? If I leave my purse on a table in Costa is it ok for someone to steal it?

It's cheap as chips and IIRC there's a 7 day free trial too.

Are they disadvantaged by their netflix being used? Maybe slightly due to programme recommendations, but not materially

Your purse going missing is completely different

IcedSpice · 03/08/2021 19:09

@chlloee D'oh! Of course you are- it's not yours. And it might end up costing the person who owns it money/getting them in trouble. People might not know this, but a few years ago Netflix changed the rules so that if an account is used by a certain amount of people, the subscriber has to pay a bit extra.

What makes you think this is ok? You're using something that's not yours and should not use it out of respect for that, and log them out.

but a few years ago Netflix changed the rules so that if an account is used by a certain amount of people, the subscriber has to pay a bit extra

Maybe they should have logged out??

It's devices not users, and the onus is on the user to manage this not someone stumbling on free netflix for a week, for all everyone knows it might be someone staying logged in as a good will gesture.

It's for the owner of the account to deal with, if they get charged more (a couple of quid) then it might teach them some basic internet saftey.

Skysblue · 03/08/2021 21:02

Whatever you watch will be visible in their history to them (and their family), so
Yanbu to watch a fee kids cartoons.
Yabu to watch v weird or sexy stuff.

Birminghambloke · 03/08/2021 23:09

Thanks for this thread. I check out of my hotel tomorrow and have just ensured I’ve logged out of apps used on tv. There is a button to do this on the tv too!

I’d not use someone else’s account in a holiday let. I do think it’s being a CF. Taking advantage of someone’s omission. I let a friend use my Netflix account as I don’t use all the available devices. I set up a separate profile so we don’t impact on each other’s viewing choices.

Snowflakekiller · 03/08/2021 23:22

Crack on, if they didnt log out then more fool them.. make sure you leave it logged in for the next weeks guests as well.

It's fine. They should have logged out.
worldandsky · 03/08/2021 23:25

Use it, it's not going to cost them anything more. If they have a issue they can just log you out but the wouldn't be notified of it.

beautifullymad · 04/08/2021 00:05

It depends on the level of Netflix they subscribe to. If they have more than 4 users they probably won't even notice. If they do they will change the password.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/08/2021 00:09

YABU

Saoirse82 · 04/08/2021 03:55

@Disneycharacter

Several (3?) can use netflix at a time so don't worry about it. Use the adult profile and they probably won't notice. It's not costing them anything and if they notice they will log out and create a new one to log you out.
This. I have Netflix and I really wouldn't care if someone watched after I'd not logged out, I'm sure its happened in the past. It's no big deal as it can be used on different devices at the same time.
Rudeppl · 04/08/2021 05:02

What a cheeky fucker you are. I’d call the police.

SamVimes6 · 04/08/2021 05:27

Don’t be a cheeky fucker and teach your kids some respect

Or maybe carry on and teach the Netflix account owner to log out of. his/her account in future!
No harm done really, let the kids enjoy.

SamVimes6 · 04/08/2021 05:30

What a cheeky fucker you are. I’d call the police

And say what? It’s numptys like you that clog the system up for no reason!
Watching an already logged in to Netflix account is hardly the Hatton Garden heist!
The police would piss themselves laughing at ‘ I left my Netflix account open and now some random is watching Stranger Things on my account’
