To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

it's not a pay-as-you-go. Makes no difference if you watch it 24/7 or 1 hour a week

Yes, I know and that is irrelevant. Others have said it can mess up "watched" and where you are in a series.

Continuing to watch something requires an ongoing fee which you have not paid for is cheeky fuckery.

If you're a cheeky fucker, sure, carry on but accept that you're a CF. If you're a decent person, log out.

burnoutbabe · 03/08/2021 12:45

When I said it may be a crime, there are plenty of strange dishonesty type crimes which yes the police would not prosecute but are still (technically) criminal.

Case of a young lady who accepted gifts from a besotted older man, held to be theft or dishonesty (on her part) recently.

We studied it all in criminal law, the whole area is quite interesting.

onebeauplace · 03/08/2021 12:47

I genuinely would not give a single solitary shite if someone use my netflix account.

I think if this is the kind of thing you'd get worked up over then you probably need some actual problems in your life.

unclench it's nothing to do with being decent, a bit precious maybe Hmm

if you are bothered, log out! If you are not, no big deal.

NerrSnerr · 03/08/2021 12:50

I wouldn't care about this, as PP have said they'll just log you out if it's a problem.

Let's just hope the owner of the Netflix account isn't one of the posters on here or you'll have armed police knocking at the door!!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 03/08/2021 12:53

they may get a warning, i do, otoh, they logged in there so might not get any warnings, so they probably wont know

eightyfourandahalf · 03/08/2021 12:56

Most people would just think it's a netflix account for the rental, same as sky or whatever and not think anything of it.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/08/2021 12:57

When they go to log on at home they can boot out the signon there. I would have not problem using it until that happens.

rantymcrantface66 · 03/08/2021 12:57

@eightyfourandahalf

I think things like this separate those who have a life and those who don't and get worked up about the most trivial things

I don't know.. we are all on MN talking about it 😂

My dc are at their dads for the first time since we broke up from school 5 weeks ago. Sitting on the sofa switching between Netflix (I don't care who else is watching it, dc mess up my watched lists anyway) and mumsnet is a great life right now 😆
Lunariagal · 03/08/2021 13:01

Our last holiday let was signed Into netflix. We just assumed it was part of the service.

grapewine · 03/08/2021 13:10

I get warnings about unusual sign-ins, so you'd get signed out quickly. It's a bit CF.

grapewine · 03/08/2021 13:12

Messing up the watch history would be a clear sign, too. Just pay for your own.

rantymcrantface66 · 03/08/2021 13:26

It's already been signed in by the owner of the account. That's how they are able to use it.

burritofan · 03/08/2021 13:46

Log it off with 101, OP.

CaitlyntheCactus · 03/08/2021 13:50

It wouldn't bother me if it were my nextflix.

CornishGem1975 · 03/08/2021 13:53

I'm literally LOLing at people getting upset over 'messed up watch lists'. First world problems and all that.

cultkid · 03/08/2021 13:55

It's probably the account for the holiday home owner dw about it use it

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 03/08/2021 14:21

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

I'd be slightly pissed off if someone used my Netflix account, DD would be apoplectic because she's a bit precious about her account, she doesn't want suggestions for things she's not interested in. Hmm
She must be permanently annoyed because my Netflix recommendations are shit!
Thoughtcontagion · 03/08/2021 15:26

I got email saying carry on watching xxxx so I knew someone had hacked my Netflix, I let others use mine I’m not bothered, I saw this CF was watching a series so waited until they were on last episode and changed all mine to kids so they were left hanging, logged out and changed password

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2021 15:51

I’m with you @Doublestar. Someone using my Netflix account is very close to the bottom of my list of concerns.

RainRainGoAway12 · 03/08/2021 16:01

OMG! I’ve left my Netflix account logged in to all sorts of holiday rentals over the years. Couldn’t give two hoots if subsequent guests used it. It’s my fault for doing it in the first place. When I finally notice, I obviously log out.

MadeOfStarStuff · 03/08/2021 16:07

YABU

If you want to watch Netflix then pay for it, it’s very cheap!

ramarama · 03/08/2021 16:18

I've done this accidentally before (I have my own account, not being cheap) Most rental accommodation seems to have someone's account logged in these days. Happens when kid turns tv on before I do.

NB Netflix ran an ad campaign saying that they know everyone shares log ins, won't make a bit of difference to anything except Netflix's profit margin.

Hemingwaycat · 03/08/2021 16:21

We did this in a hotel in Prague, it was logged into the previous guests Netflix so just used it. Didn’t really think twice, nothing happened.

NumberTheory · 03/08/2021 16:26

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

I'm always surprised by how OK people are on MN with people using other people's streaming accounts. This may sounds dramatic to some but I see it as stealing - your using a service someone else paid for without permission. Saying "well they should have logged out", WTF, do you apply that principle to other areas of life? If I leave my purse on a table in Costa is it ok for someone to steal it?

It's cheap as chips and IIRC there's a 7 day free trial too.

It’s a totally different moral question from something like a purse where there’s a real world loss to the party that owned it.
