To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

I'd just watch it but be prepared for it to go off at any minute.

Kinsters · 03/08/2021 09:58

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

If genre were books and games in a holiday lodge I'd assume they belonged to the lodge. Not a previous guest
It's the same thing though - you're not depriving anyone of anything by using the books/games or watching the streaming service. If it is a mistake and the items belong to previous guests they can come and retrieve their books/games or remotely log out from their streaming service. No harm done.
MangoBiscuit · 03/08/2021 09:58

If I'd left myself logged in, and you messed up my recently watched, I'd probably gently kick myself and log you out. If I saw it was a bunch of kids shows coming up, I'd do the same, after maybe a week. The recently watched will soon sort itself out, and if you mess up where I was in a series, and I can't remember where I was myself, I probably need a catch up.

I couldn't get worked up about this.

Shirleyphallus · 03/08/2021 10:00

I really can’t believe everyone would care so much about this. If I left myself logged in and next time I returned to Netflix found someone was half way through Game of Thrones or something I’d laugh

Really not a big deal and definitely not stealing!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 03/08/2021 10:00

@Kinsters of course you are! They may not be able to watch what hey want because the OPs kids are watching their Netflix. Their recommendations will be messed up. And they may be freaked out by someone else using their service, they may be elderley for example and not fully understand how the screen 'sharing' works.

Books and games also aren't paid for on a subscription service. It's CF of the highest order.

It's £6 OP. Don't be a tight bastard, get your own

Wooollffff · 03/08/2021 10:01

It’s no big deal just carry on using it.

My DD’s boyfriends family in Holland were using my Netflix for months. I only realised because I reviewed the login details and saw people logging in from there. They thought it was a free trial and were mortified.

I have 4 profiles set up and assume a family member used my profile by mistake if something random came up. I do change the password every few months.

My student DD’s share login details with their friends.

DynamoKev · 03/08/2021 10:01

I get an email about logins from new locations - but they probably had one when they logged in there so they may not notice.
It is stealing but it's a fairly benign form in the sense they almost certainly won't lose anything - if they notice they can change the password and log you out.

Datingandnoideahowto · 03/08/2021 10:02

This would really piss me off. Cheeky.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 03/08/2021 10:03

Did they bollocks Grin they're having you on

My student DD’s share login details with their friends.

Completely different when you're giving someone explicit permission

UrAWizHarry · 03/08/2021 10:05

It's pretty cheeky. If you don't subsribe yourselves just get a free trial to one of the services and use that for the duration of the break.

aiwblam · 03/08/2021 10:05

I wouldn’t do it - depending on the Netflix package, devices may be limited. The owners of the account could find out if they can’t log in themselves and they’d know where the login was and they’d know it was you therefore.

JustJoinedRightNow · 03/08/2021 10:06

You’ll also muck up the formula for their suggested viewing. You’re being a CF using something you clearly know isn’t yours to use.

ajandjjmum · 03/08/2021 10:06

Wouldn't worry me at all. DS's flatmates still use one of my Netflix profiles, although he's in Australia!

kurtney · 03/08/2021 10:07

If I was that bothered about someone else using it, I'd make certain to log out before I left for home.

I might do a Shock if I found someone else's 'just watched' and do a mild 'tsk' then I'd boot you out and change the password but ultimately it's my fault for not making sure I'd logged out first.

SpaceRaiders · 03/08/2021 10:08

Meh. It wouldn’t bother me.

I have shared my Amazon prime, Netflix and Sky accounts with family/friends. At various points I’ve used my brothers Netflix account too. The only annoying thing is when you’re part way through a series and you loose your place if someone else starts watching it.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 03/08/2021 10:08

@Disneycharacter

Several (3?) can use netflix at a time so don't worry about it. Use the adult profile and they probably won't notice. It's not costing them anything and if they notice they will log out and create a new one to log you out.
Not if they only have the cheaper version where one device can watch at a given time.
Kinsters · 03/08/2021 10:09

The owner of the account won't get locked out, they'd just click the button to log out on all devices and then log back in on theirs. I've done it before when there was a login I didn't expect - log everybody out, change password and let everyone know the new password. It's not hard.
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 03/08/2021 10:09

A free trial for several months? Sure... [chinny reckon]

SpaceRaiders · 03/08/2021 10:11

No, they’d perhaps know it was the cottage, not who it was specifically. It’s impossible to know who checks in after you’ve left a cottage.

rantymcrantface66 · 03/08/2021 10:11

They won't be notified. Personally I'd not notice either as dc watch all kinds of crap, including when they are away at their dads and don't stick to their own accounts. Mine can also be used on multiple devices so I'd still be able to log in and watch. I wouldn't be bothered if it was mine, my fault really but I'd thank you for logging out before you leave. It could well be the holiday cottage people through. Some share with friends or family etc so others names on there

Saidtoomuch · 03/08/2021 10:13

I would use it. It isn't costing them anything, and agree with the above that you should do them a favour and log them off when you leave. I say that as someone with a Netflix account.

Clymene · 03/08/2021 10:15

Personally I wouldn't give a toss if you did this. Just warn your children that they could get kicked off at any moment.

Abraxan · 03/08/2021 10:16

I'd have just assumed it was part of the holiday house TV options. I wouldn't have questioned it tbh. Owner and rest of their family may not all have same name so wouldn't really have questioned who it be,I fed to.

If it is a previous guest they may well notice you're using it and just log it out.

Can't really complain about their recommendations changing, etc as they should have logged out when leaving the rental, if it is a guest.

If it was me and out account I would t be overly bothered. We'd just log it out of that device as soon as we noticed and kick ourselves for forgetting to.

VeganVeal · 03/08/2021 10:18

Its theft, pure and simple

Progress2019 · 03/08/2021 10:19

I wouldn’t mind if someone used ours.

We had Disney plus for the first year, and someone kept watching Frozen. Everyone in the house denied it was them, so god knows! The trouble with having teenagers/early 20s kids is they all seem to share.
