To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

If someone leaves a book, would you read it?

Of course.. same thing.

Etinox · 03/08/2021 11:54

@burnoutbabe

I'd do it. I'd use the account furthest right!

It could be the account of the owners though for the property, but then you'd expect to see an account called "guest of 28" etc

A more relevant analogy would be if they'd left half a bottle of milk or some shampoo. Use it, maybe not anything too edge of seat as you could locked out at any moment.

CF Biscuit

Singlebutmarried · 03/08/2021 11:56

I accidentally left mine logged in once at a holiday rental. Realised when we got home and 2 new profiles had appeared.

I changed the password.

The CFs then left a shitty review for the apartment owner really MY Netflix.

Wish I’d have changed the profile names to Cheeky and Fucker and then changed the password later.

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

I'd be slightly pissed off if someone used my Netflix account, DD would be apoplectic because she's a bit precious about her account, she doesn't want suggestions for things she's not interested in. Hmm
DD should log out if it's going to cause her stress. Do you have to carefully watch on another account so she doesn't have suggestions she wouldn't like?

@burnoutbabe, sorry I quoted the wrong poster. Someone else was equating Netflix usage to wearing left behind clothes.

SwedishEdith · 03/08/2021 11:58

Kids share passwords all the time - I'm not sure the parents always know. So could not get worked up about this at all. Plus, Netflix is mostly shite. Trying to find anything worth watching is the main problem hence why it's so cheap.

Of course.. same thing.

That's not the same thing at all is it? Netflix is an ongoing cost. You buy a book and that's it.
AryaStarkWolf · 03/08/2021 12:02

It might be the owners and ok for guests to use

igoogledfunnyusernames · 03/08/2021 12:03

I'd use it, it's not harming anyone, if someone used mine I'd think nothing of it.

rantymcrantface66 · 03/08/2021 12:04

But one that won't change if you watch it. Personally I wouldn't watch it as I have my own account with all our profiles but I'd not mind if someone watched mine in those circumstances. As I said previously I'd appreciate it if they logged me out on leaving in return.

Birminghambloke · 03/08/2021 12:15

@SpaceRaiders

Meh. It wouldn’t bother me.

I have shared my Amazon prime, Netflix and Sky accounts with family/friends. At various points I’ve used my brothers Netflix account too. The only annoying thing is when you’re part way through a series and you loose your place if someone else starts watching it.

On Netflix you can set up separate profiles, so you can watch the same at own pace.
ancientgran · 03/08/2021 12:16

My DD had a holiday in India and used the local internet cafe. For years afterwards she had an account (not FB but something like that) come up as she was back in India. It became a family joke and it was quite sad when it ended.

We don't get out much.

Ozanj · 03/08/2021 12:19

Are you sure the owner hasn’t set it up for your use?

Allthesefolks · 03/08/2021 12:22

Meh it’s their own fault for leaving it logged in, I couldn’t get annoyed if someone did this to me.

starfishmummy · 03/08/2021 12:24

Are you sure it’s the previous guests Netflix account and not the cottage owners?

This. We have a basic freeview only tv at home, so if anything else was available on a holiday cottage tv I'd just assume it was part of the package the owner had got.

JellyNo15 · 03/08/2021 12:26

If I had forgotten to log out I wouldn't bothered if you used it. But obviously when I logged back in at home you would lose it 🙍

eightyfourandahalf · 03/08/2021 12:29

it's not a pay-as-you-go. Makes no difference if you watch it 24/7 or 1 hour a week.

If there are too many profiles in use, it's obvious and they can log out other devices.

The OP logging out the suscriber would be CF!

me4real · 03/08/2021 12:35

@chlloee D'oh! Of course you are- it's not yours. And it might end up costing the person who owns it money/getting them in trouble. People might not know this, but a few years ago Netflix changed the rules so that if an account is used by a certain amount of people, the subscriber has to pay a bit extra.

What makes you think this is ok? You're using something that's not yours and should not use it out of respect for that, and log them out.

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/08/2021 12:35

@VeganVeal

Its theft, pure and simple
Is it fuck 😂😂😊😊

Honestly people on here get their knickers in a twist over the most bizarre things. The account owner isn’t going to suffer any loss, and if they were that bothered they’d have made sure they logged out of their account before they left.

Notaroadrunner · 03/08/2021 12:36

It would be annoying if they only had a subscription for 2 users and tried using it on 2 devices at home. However, they'd soon realise their mistake and would surely be able to shut down and change the password. I'd probably continue watching and if queried just say you assumed it was available to you as part of the rental.

Doublestar · 03/08/2021 12:36

This OP may well be in the cottage we left on Saturday - Dd told me when we were driving home she'd forgotten to log out of Netflix. I've not bothered to sign out yet as it hasn't affected us and I'm not really that bothered.

If I went to a holiday cottage and there was Netflix on the tv I would assume it was part of the cottage perks - who even bothers to read the folders that are left in the cottage? We're too busy enjoying our holiday!

I think things like this separate those who have a life and those who don't and get worked up about the most trivial things.

Stealing FFS!!

Dbank · 03/08/2021 12:37

Just because it's easy to do doesn't make it okay, the decent thing to do is log out of their account.

It really depends on what kind of person you want to be.

me4real · 03/08/2021 12:37

You could ask the owner if it's for you to use, but I think they would've mentioned it in the blurb or something.

me4real · 03/08/2021 12:39

@Doublestar People who care about being decent people acting decently towards others and doing the right thing.

I don't know.. we are all on MN talking about it 😂
