To use previous guest's Netflix login in holiday home...

So we arrived on Saturday at our rented cottage in Suffolk for a weeks holiday.

Dear children on browsing the television found the Netflix button and found it to have an account linked to it. We have logged in and watched various programmes

Are we being unreasonable to login an use the account to watch? It seems to be a previous guest's as they dont relate to the owner (and cottage is not advertised as having Netflix) so I guess technically we are breaking terms and conditions, would they have received notification that we were using it?

@greensnail

If I'd forgotten to log out of Netflix before leaving then I wouldn't be upset if this happened. If they're bothered then they need to remember to log out when they leave somewhere.
This. If it stops them using it they will log you out. If they don't there will be no harm done and no additional cost to them.
Mockolate · 03/08/2021 10:21

I'm a regular Netflix watcher and you can only watch from the one screen here as I'm too tight to pay for anything more than the basic package Grin
So I wouldn't be able to watch as it'd tell me - something like "you are unable to watch as already someone watching Netflix"
Plus what you watch will show up in their pages.
Eg "Because you watched this, how about watching that?"
If you haven't watched anything of the sort you'll be scratching your head like Confused lol
They should have logged out but it really is proper cheeky fuckery to use someone else's account.

burritofan · 03/08/2021 10:22

Personally I’d log out then in with my own. You don’t have to sign up to an annual sub with Netflix, you can just do one month then cancel.

If I saw my recommendations changing because I’d left myself logged in somewhere, I’d either change the password, or start watching things like You, The Spy, I Know What You Did Last Summer

Neondisco · 03/08/2021 10:23

@VeganVeal

Its theft, pure and simple
Bahaha! Mumsnet is fucking hilarious.

I wouldn't care if it was me.

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2021 10:24

If it was my Netflix account I really wouldn’t care about someone else using it. It’s not as if it was going to cost me any more. Crack on, if they were bothered they’d have logged out.

HOkieCOkie · 03/08/2021 10:26

No sign them out! And use your own.

GoWalkabout · 03/08/2021 10:26

Its no biggie, I wouldn't mind. But you could just do the free trial for your holidays.

You would be able to watch though, you'd just have to log all devices out and then log back in on your own TV. Change the password if you're not sure how someone else got to be watching it.

To those saying it's stealing, it's definitely not. Stealing is taking someone else's property - nothing has been taken.

How is it NOT stealing. Your using a service someone else has paid for without permission

It’s not stealing because you’re not being deprived of anything. It’s like someone else reading your newspaper.

But what's been taken? If you had a limited amount of shows you could watch then you'd have deprived someone of something but that's not how it works.
diamondpony80 · 03/08/2021 10:34

If you can afford a holiday I don’t see why you couldn’t just pay for a month of Netflix yourself?

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 03/08/2021 10:36

I wouldn't care if someone used mine.

KarmaStar · 03/08/2021 10:37

Yabu i and a c.f. But as you've already been using it I don't know why you bothered asking.

Thehop · 03/08/2021 10:37

Cheeky but harmless.

Mockolate · 03/08/2021 10:38

Sorry yes I wasn't clear - I originally wouldn't be able to watch - as in it would tell me that it was already in use and couldn't to which I'd be Hmm
I would then log everything out and get all the passwords changed on everything for security as who knows what else the cheeky fucker is doing.

ememem84 · 03/08/2021 10:38

i had someone use my netflix after holidays. it was a friend of ours, and i'd logged in on their tv.

however they continued to use it and not pay for it. so. i waited until they had watched all but one episode of a series. and then changed the password.

Antwerpen · 03/08/2021 10:39

@Happy36

If the previous guests had left their clothes there, would you wear them ?
Oh give over Hmm
LittleGwyneth · 03/08/2021 10:40

Absolutely fine. Have at it.

YeokensYegg · 03/08/2021 10:41

It's theft.

Had someone do this with my phone service some years ago. I arranged a shutoff date and seems they moved in a day or two early.
Cheeky fuckers couldn't just limit it to local calls. They had to make a heap of long distance calls.
They claimed they didn't know. Right.

I suppose it's ok if you left your atm card in logged in and forgot it, it would be ok to withdraw some money as it's just there open.

Log off and get your own.

Totally different situations. Someone using your phone line or your credit card you'd be out of pocket, someone using your streaming service you'd at most be very slightly inconvenienced.
frazzledasarock · 03/08/2021 10:44

Is it theft?

It wont cost the owner anything and wont inconvenience them bar having to log out and change password.

The people making phonecalls on your bill were thieves, why didn't the phone company end the contract on the day you were moving out?

ADHDgirl · 03/08/2021 10:45

Are you sure it’s the previous guests Netflix account and not the cottage owners?

Me and DP stayed in an air b&b last summer and the lady told us she leaves her Netflix logged in for guests to enjoy.

That’s completely different, it cost you money. This isn’t costing anything.
