AIBU to be surprised that Laurel Hubbard didn't register a lift in the Olympics?

I wonder if all the controversy around Laurel's participation led to her losing her nerve?

The IOC have said they will review the rules around trans people competing and what's been said is very odd. I think things are going to get worse for women.

www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/30/ioc-admits-guidelines-for-transgender-athletes-are-not-fit-for-purpose

IOC head of medical and science director-

'“The other important thing to remember is that trans women are women. You have got to include all women if you possibly can.”

not sure how anyone could think LH is a woman, looks very much a chunky over weight male from where I'm sitting.

AlfonsoTheMango · 02/08/2021 18:33

This will probably get me a deletion but on the subject of snatch, clean and jerk...I've now got an The Charles Atlas song earworm from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

BoomChicka · 02/08/2021 18:34

I'm very pleased Hubbard did not win a medal, but that doesn't change the fact they took a place from a female athlete, and I agree this is only the beginning. I would not be encouraging my daughter to be an athlete in this climate.

DrSbaitso · 02/08/2021 18:35

Remember she took gold in the Pacific Games, costing three younger and fitter women their fair medals. The Olympics have a bigger audience, so that's where it's necessary to try to demonstrate that a woman is the same as a man who took some androgen blockers in his late 30s.

Nobody does.
NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 18:39

I've just watched the BBC red button coverage of the event. They showed loads of women lifting but I didn't see Hubbard...

I don't get it. Anyone else watched? Have the BBC just cut LH from it?

DrSbaitso · 02/08/2021 18:44

@Liberett0

Fantastic to see so many people have such a passionate interest in weightlifting on mumsnet. Shame that the only weightlifter they could probably name without the help of Google is Laurel Hubbard 😂
Even if this weren't complete shite, it would still be totally irrelevant to the issue at hand.

@beastlyslumber your post was 100% correct and wasn't uncivil. You were stating a fact. If he has a package then he is still a man no matter if he is taking hormones to lessen facial hair!

NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 18:53

I'm interested in the idea I've seen a lot that people only care about things that impact them etc.

Eg and related to topic I've seen more than once on the prisons situation.

Well you're not going to prison I assume so why do you care? You don't it's all hate etc etc.

The idea that women are incapable with caring about other women in general is a pretty big accusation. Apparently women don't do empathy for other women...?!

EMILY CAMPBELL, EMILY CAMPBELL, EMILY CAMPBELL

She did fantastically and got our first silver in women's weightlifting - actually I think our first ever medal.

If a woman has her uterus removed does it make her an un-woman ? No it does not.
There's more to being a woman/man than your genitals. Chromosomes

Helleofabore · 02/08/2021 19:01

@beastlyslumber

Got an email from MN telling me my post broke the talk guidelines and telling me to be civil in future. Really confused by this. What did I say that was incivil? Was it calling LH a 'fat old bloke'? That's a fair observation, isn't it? I've heard worse said about people on MN. Or was it when I said he was a cheat? Because that's just true. Or was it when I swore and said he was 'taking the piss'? But posters on here regularly call people 'cunts' and that's fine? Not sure why I should be getting hassled for giving my opinion in a reasonable and polite way.
Did they recommend you popping over to the feminist board to look at the guidelines that posts need to fit into over there?

I am sad to say that there are many eyes on this thread and your post would have been reported. For many of the reasons you posted. Did they tell you if you got a strike? Or just a warning?

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/08/2021 19:02

@Bryonyshcmyony

Surely NZ must feel a bit embarrassed about sending Hubbard?
I doubt it. They knew it would cause controversy. I imagine they are proud of displaying their liberal, woke credentials
Helleofabore · 02/08/2021 19:05

Well some are very angry about that athletes inclusion. Of course, they have been told to shut the fuck up though. Particularly the previous NZ women’s record holder.

NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 19:10

I'm really angry on behalf of the reserve from NZ.

Hubbard knew they were not on form.

Why not withdraw and give another NZ competitor a chance to compete and maybe have a medal chance?

Floisme · 02/08/2021 19:13

A person who has had her uterus removed was, I think we can assume, born with a uterus, which definitely makes her a woman,

334bu · 02/08/2021 19:13

🤣 Oh dear this is not the place to make stupid statements like that.

beastlyslumber · 02/08/2021 19:14

Did they tell you if you got a strike? Or just a warning?

As far as I can see, @Helleofabore it was a warning. They 'felt' I broke the talk guidelines. Presumably someone disagreed with me, and rather than putting forward their counter-argument, decided to tell on me to Big Mummy. (Can you tell I'm pissed off Grin)

334bu · 02/08/2021 19:15

Sorry Daphne misread that and didn't spot the irony. Blush

titchy · 02/08/2021 19:17

Well yes. And a Y makes you male. Regardless of T levels and forename.

beastlyslumber · 02/08/2021 19:18

If a woman has her uterus removed does it make her an un-woman ? No it does not. There's more to being a woman/man than your genitals. Chromosomes

What does this mean? You think LH has changed their chromosomes? Or you think that a hysterectomy makes you less of woman? I can't work out what you're trying to say here. What more is there to being male or female than your body?

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/08/2021 19:22

I'm trying to point out the ridiculousness of the position that merely removing your male genitals makes you a woman
Helleofabore · 02/08/2021 19:22

Glad you didn’t get a strike beastlyslumber. We twist our language like pretzels to fit into the guidelines. It is ridiculous.
