I live in a rural location which is very popular with walkers / bikers / horse riders etc. It's heaving today for some unknown reason as the weather is rubbish!

We have 2 driveways. One which was with the original cottage then a small bit of garden then a second which leads to the additional land we have. The second driveway the forestry commission have a ROW over as the track continues up into the forest. Next to that driveway is a footpath. Both driveways have gates at either end and both say private property/dogs running loose. (Diagram attached - not to scale!)

I have just had a straw delivery and so opened the second driveway gates to let the farmer in and trundled round the back to show him where to put them. He's unloaded and driven off and I've gone to lock the gates back up. Literally as he's driven off and I'm walking down a guy has pulled in the gates and parked up and 3 kids have jumped out and he started unloading their bikes.

I politely ask him to move as he's on private land and he says there are no signs he thought it was a parking spot. I say they are on the gate and it's clearly an enclosed piece of land that is not a parking space and he says he couldn't see them as the gates were open but he'll only be a few minutes. No problem, I say, I'll pop back and shut the gates in 5. Off I toddle.

I have returned and his car is still there and he has gone. He has left a note on the windscreen which says "had to park here no other spaces". I mean WTF?!

WIBU to shut the gates, padlock the fucker in, block the gates with my truck AND then disappear for at least 48 hours?

How fucking rude are they? Seriously so cheeky. I would be having an entire bottle of wine, as would DB and there would be no choice but to get a cab home, and come back the next day to recover his car, at a time convenient to you, of course and if he tries anything “well I’m sorry but stuff has to be Locked away for insurance purposes and I told you you were on private land, it’s very obvious.”

Hathertonhariden · 31/07/2021 14:06

C

No note. You don't owe him any explanation of where you are or when you will be back. He's not left you with any means of contacting him.

newnortherner111 · 31/07/2021 14:06

The dogs don't deserve to meet someone like the man concerned. Unless they are incontinent.

I favour C.

GojuRyuLover · 31/07/2021 14:06

@Ninkanink

Yes that could be a concern too. Either way the dogs need to be kept out of the way.
I agree. Make sure that the dogs are safe from getting hurt by this nasty man/getting in trouble if CF pretends that they are aggressive.

Best keeping the dogs safe inside and leaving CF's car trapped until tomorrow.

Sonarl · 31/07/2021 14:06

Go to the pub!

Why should you have left your gates unlocked and open to burglary because of this entitled prick!

newnortherner111 · 31/07/2021 14:07

If the man cannot see the signs then he is not safe to drive, and so you would be irresponsible to allow him access to the vehicle.

Teaandakitkat · 31/07/2021 14:07

I would go out and leave him a note saying:

I told you not to park here and you did it anyway. I have to keep my gates locked for insurance requirements. I had plans to go out, I'm not changing them for you, I'll be back this evening.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/07/2021 14:08

It can’t just be me thinking you need to get “Who let the dogs out” ready to play, loud, for when he comes back

Especially as the (often overlooked) theme of that song is challenging arrogant, badly-behaved men who think they can just ride roughshod over women and their feelings.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 31/07/2021 14:10

I am absolutely thrilled that you've made your point so beautifully and stuck by it. I'd go out for lunch, just because I'm a contrary bastard and I also like food. Cheeky parking fucker deserves every inconvenience possible.

Chimchar · 31/07/2021 14:10

I've just stopped decorating for a quick break and now I can't go back to it without knowing what is going on!

Fair play op, SUPERB parking thread. Extra points for a brilliant diagram without even being asked! WinkGrin

NoProblem123 · 31/07/2021 14:11

A - it’s all about the standoff 🍿

…Unless you were going for a carvery anyway, in which case C.

No dogs.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/07/2021 14:11

Take wheel off your truck and jack it up.

Or put a big note on the windscreen saying "Sorry, broken down - awaiting highly specialist parts to be delivered from a factory in Brazil (after their carnival season has finished at the end of August) Grin

CakeandGo · 31/07/2021 14:12

I well want a carvery now.

Ellie56 · 31/07/2021 14:12

If you were planning on going to the carvery anyway, you should go. You definitely shouldn't change your plans for a CF.

NerrSnerr · 31/07/2021 14:13

You 100% did the right thing. People like this drive me insane. We live on a road which is double yellows and have a shared drive between 6 houses. It's clearly signposted as private but people park, blocking us in all the time. People are so selfish and just don't want to walk.

dapsnotplimsolls · 31/07/2021 14:13

What would you have done if this hadn't happened? Do that and/or the carvery 😃

DDiva · 31/07/2021 14:14

I would go out. Leave a note saying you needed to secure your property as going out and film be back roughly X time ( make sure its a while).

You told him its private property, he parked there anyway he takes the consequences.

ToffeePennie · 31/07/2021 14:14

@CakeandGo me too! Proper starving, but we are having a fat takeout tonight in honour of making it through another year of wedded bliss…lol carvery sounds so good right now

Sagaris · 31/07/2021 14:14

Enjoy your carvery! You are 100% in the right, you asked him not to park, he ignored you, so go lawfully about your business! Grin

nauticant · 31/07/2021 14:15

I'm with you OP apart from any thoughts about letting the dogs out unsupervised. Do that and you're asking for the situation to possibly turn nasty with the Police getting involved.

In your place I'd put a note on the invasive car saying that you will be opening the gate at 5pm for a short while, maybe half an hour.

Kinneddar · 31/07/2021 14:16

Take wheel off your truck and jack it up

Oh thats a cracking idea because that'll be so easy to do & won't inconvenience the OP in the slightest 🙄

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 31/07/2021 14:17

Normally the dogs are loose and have access over the whole lot if we in.

I've drawn a diagram (without cock and ball trees) to show but if you imagine rings around the house thats what it's like. So the first ring the dogs have whether we in or out and they have free access to get in and out the house via dog flaps. We've then for 5 million gates opening up into the other rings which we an open / shut at will.

I wouldn't want parking man to have a leg to stand on about complaining though so I won't let the dogs out any further than they already were :)

No notes, OP. You do not owe this total twat any justifications or reasons for anything you do now. I would go to the pub, and come back at your own pace. Whatever you do, when you do speak to him, don't say "I'm sorry but ..." as some have suggested on here. You don't need to explain yourself to him.

SixesAndEights · 31/07/2021 14:17

What's this with leaving notes for the twat?

Just go out. And leave the dogs inside, out of harms way.

Noshowlomo · 31/07/2021 14:17

CF of the highest order. You owe him nothing, no letting him out, no chance to get his car in peace. He just expected that you would do as he wanted because his life is important and you and your garden mean f all.
Go for a meal and keep updating as this is the best thread on here in ages !
I could eat a big pub lunch now.
