To Think You Don’t Need Carbs With Shepherds Pie?

Looking at a thread on Facebook asking for accompaniments to shepherds pie and loads of people were suggesting things like garlic bread, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkies etc. All quite heavy when the dish already has mash on top. Somebody even suggested coleslaw! ( And yes I know that’s not carbs!) If I have shepherd’s pie, all I serve with it is peas or another green vegetable.

@Blinkingheckythump

Who the f has salad with cottage pie?! Salad with gravy? No I refuse to accept this. It's on par with coleslaw and gravy. Nope no no. I usually serve mine without a side as it's got meat, veg and potato in it. It's an entire meal. Always with cheese on and extra gravy mind. I'm bloody hungry now 😹
We have the salad first, in a salad bowl, not on the same plate with the hot food. Grin

Shepherd's Pie = lamb. I always serve lamb with peas

IJustLikeBiscuitsOK · 31/07/2021 03:38

We have Yorkshire puddings and extra gravy with ours, we are Northern Heathens tho.

Mockolate · 31/07/2021 03:42

Yorkshire puddings belong on Sunday dinners, not with Shepherds pie and also Northern lol
Shepherds pie belongs with peas.

Peas have a similar amount of carbs as bread though.

Another pairing that similarly makes me go “wtf” is serving pasta with garlic bread. People always seem to be serving garlic bread alongside spaghetti or lasagna or whatever and I just think…was this meal brought to us by wheat lobbyists?

sashh · 31/07/2021 05:56

No carbs.

I made one yesterday, it had peas and corn in it so I had nothing on the side. If I'd not added veg then I would put them as a side.

I mix the veg in the pie so sometimes it's carrots and peas.

Aprilx · 31/07/2021 06:12

I have it by itself. If I were to have something with it, then it would be a vegetable (but not more potato).

MrsClatterbuck · 31/07/2021 06:14

No to any extra carbs but just green veg like peas or cabbage etc. Never understood why people have bread and butter with fish and chips when you already have 2 carbs with the chips and the batter.
Though I do like chips with my lasagne

Lampzade · 31/07/2021 06:16

YanBU
Should be eaten with vegetables

itsgettingwierd · 31/07/2021 06:25

I don't make shepherds pie.

But for all those sniffing at coleslaw - I have it with lasagne!

It's Devine 😋

Vicliz24 · 31/07/2021 06:34

You definitely don't need to but I confess that the once or twice a year I do shepherds pie it's served with home made chips and lathered In gravy. That's just the way we like it and as we have it so rarely it's the way I'm sticking with Smile

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2021 07:11

Maybe it's not about what people 'need' and more about what they like to eat?

It doesn't necessarily mean that people are eating more or it's going to make them overweight. Plus some people have active jobs or lifestyles and need the carbs/calories.

Also chips and cottage pie or lasagne and garlic bread just add variety and its nice to have something to mop up gravy, sauce etc.

People seem to forget that cottage/shepherds pie are traditional meals made to use up the end of the Sunday roast and you need extras to make it go round. It comes from a time where people couldn't afford a meal made mostly of meat.

Bread or bun on the side to make a chip butty is a life essential with fish and chips!
CurryLover55 · 31/07/2021 07:47

I love baked beans in a cottage pie

Eh? No, they don’t. They have about a quarter to a third of the carbs in bread, gram for gram.

Sunshinealligator · 31/07/2021 08:15

I had it in a pub one day with chips, weird, but amazing.

Londontown12 · 31/07/2021 08:17

Roasted trimmed beans. !!! X

VividGemini · 31/07/2021 08:21

Peas have about the same carb content as potato

MumW · 31/07/2021 08:51

I'd have it with peas/sweetcorn/carrots/brocolli.

This is currently my favourite adaptation of Shepherd's pie no extra carbs or veg needed, but we do add poppadoms.

Coleslaw with shepherd’s pie 🤢

Yanbu - I just do peas with mine, maybe some carrots if I have them. The potato on top serves as the carb part of the meal.

60sbird · 31/07/2021 09:48

My mum used to serve it with chips, I on the other hand serve mine with homemade cauliflower cheese, as pp said I also put peas carrots and sweetcorn in mine

FastFood · 31/07/2021 09:52

Mind you, I've never had shepherd's pie, but there's a similar dish in my country and no side with that, just a bowl of salad.

Now I wanna cook my own shepherd's pie.

AnotherMarvellousThing · 31/07/2021 09:57

I like it with salad myself — something cold, crunchy and sharp with something hot and soft (I’m vegetarian, so it’s lentil-based). But served on a separate plate so as not to make the salad warm and flaccid.

Or broccoli. I think the pie needs a textural contrast.
