To Think You Don’t Need Carbs With Shepherds Pie?

Looking at a thread on Facebook asking for accompaniments to shepherds pie and loads of people were suggesting things like garlic bread, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkies etc. All quite heavy when the dish already has mash on top. Somebody even suggested coleslaw! ( And yes I know that’s not carbs!) If I have shepherd’s pie, all I serve with it is peas or another green vegetable.

Serving something topped with mashed potato with MORE potato IS definitely weird and unneccessary..

However, serving it with more veg and yorkshire puddings might not be, after all you'd have the same combination in a roast dinner - meat/spud/veg/yorkshires so I don't see the issue there.

Surely you can have what you want with it.

LordEmsworth · 31/07/2021 11:16

Well surely if we're only allowed to eat food we NEED then shepherd's pie is itself unnecessary?

Other people are allowed to eat what they want, they don't need the food police telling them off for eating what they enjoy. Eat what you want, let them get on with it, everyone's happy, no drama.

You don't need anything. It's a meal which has everything in itConfused
Though bit of picked cabbage as suggested earlier in a thread vould be absolutely lovely!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/07/2021 11:25

And I am a carb lover!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/07/2021 11:26

@HyacinthsHydrangeas

Another pairing that similarly makes me go “wtf” is serving pasta with garlic bread. People always seem to be serving garlic bread alongside spaghetti or lasagna or whatever and I just think…was this meal brought to us by wheat lobbyists?
Yup

Peas and carrots in the mince. Doesn't need any sides although I do like tenderstem broccoli with Shepherds/Cottage pie

beautifullymad · 31/07/2021 11:46

I look at ways to reduce the already carb loaded shepherds pie!

I use a mix of white potato, sweet potato and celeriac mashed as a topping and lots of green leafy veg to balance the carb ratio on the plate.

This thread made me do shepherds pie for tonight. It'll be baked beans and carrots in the actual pie and peas on the side.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 01/08/2021 13:10

You don't need it but shepherd's pie and chips is bloody lovely.

SirSamuelVimes · 01/08/2021 13:13

Peas are carbs?!?!? Fucking hell.

I dont have anything on the side. Peas and carrots and onions in the pie. Loads of mash, often a mix of white & sweet potato or butternut squash, on top. Cheese on top of the mash.

Bloody love a shepherd's pie. (Though mine is usually a cottage pie because beef mince is cheaper).

CurryLover55 · 01/08/2021 13:39

Blimey I’m not the food police! Just wondered what people thought really. Obviously folks can have what they like; just putting it out there that it’s a meal in itself in my opinion. I am watching a thread on FB as well so picked up some good ideas along the way.

Double potato is a sign of being from a poor background I understand (after watching a TV programme on class). Double potatoes means less money is spent on meat and other, more expensive vegetables as the spuds will fill you up.

I grew up with both roast and mashed/boiled potatoes on a Sunday lunch but wouldn’t serve that today unless I had people with me who love the spud!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 01/08/2021 15:09

Yorkshire pudding was also used to fill up when I was a kid.
Not that I'm complaining.

lazylinguist · 01/08/2021 15:20

Well of course you don't need extra carbs. But people don't always make meal decisions on the basis of what they need! I wouldn't have extra carbs with it shepherd's pie. But if someone served me lasagne with garlic bread I certainly wouldn't complain.
