To Think You Don’t Need Carbs With Shepherds Pie?

Looking at a thread on Facebook asking for accompaniments to shepherds pie and loads of people were suggesting things like garlic bread, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkies etc. All quite heavy when the dish already has mash on top. Somebody even suggested coleslaw! ( And yes I know that’s not carbs!) If I have shepherd’s pie, all I serve with it is peas or another green vegetable.

Well no it doesn't need more carbs but a shepards pie butty is in fact the food of the gods.

Standrewsschool · 30/07/2021 22:14

Had shepherds pie earlier this week. Served it with peas, broccoli and carrots.

ChittyChittyBangBangChicken · 30/07/2021 22:14

I probably wouldn't serve potatoes with mashed potatoes, but there's nothing wrong with offering bread along with vegetables as a side. Bread and potatoes are sufficiently different from one another to not feel repetitive, imo.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 30/07/2021 22:15

I like it with veg and a bit of extra gravy too, but I must admit to quite liking a triple carb lasagne with chips and garlic bread so I can't talk.

Standrewsschool · 30/07/2021 22:15

“ If they need to add extra carbs, they've completely failed at the Sufficient Mash stage”

So true!

5zeds · 30/07/2021 22:15

Yeah you don’t need anymore carbs, my mum does it with peas & sweet corn. It’s got it’s carbs & protein all in one, no need for extra carbs on the side
Peas and corn ARE carbs

HighlandCowbag · 30/07/2021 22:16

Either baked beans or green veg, just a touch under done for the bit.

I've started putting a tin of chopped tomatoes in my shepherds pie, makes it so much nicer and richer.

Titsywoo · 30/07/2021 22:16

Just needs veg. People are weird with double carbs. The weirdest is chinese with rice and chips Confused

Although I do like a bit of naan with my curry and rice so who am I to criticise Grin

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 30/07/2021 22:16

I have cabbage or peas on the side.

RightOnTheEdge · 30/07/2021 22:17

My dd likes shepherd's/cottage pie with beans although she prefers it just on its own because I put veg in there anyway.
I usually have some kind of veg on the side.

I definitely wouldn't have chips or garlic bread but occasionally might have yorkshires. I don't think that's weird because you would have them with beef and potatoes on a roast.

Shmithecat2 · 30/07/2021 22:23

YANBU. For ease, I just chuck loads of veg in it and serve it cooked in individual oven to table dishes. Sorted.

Ponoka7 · 30/07/2021 22:23

I've voted YABU because it's up to adults what they eat. I put veg in my Shepards pie and just have extra green veg with it. But I like chips/naan and rice, parmenteir potatoes with lasagna, crusty bread is a must with stew, Christmas dinner is carb central, so leave them be.

Hydrate · 30/07/2021 22:24

I usually make cauliflower or a salad. I love potatoes but never double carb.

RubyGoat · 30/07/2021 22:27

Vegetables. Ideally, leafy vegetables or broccoli, maybe a root veg like swede or carrots. Quite enough carbs in shepherd's pie. Not because I'm low carb, or because I don't do double carb. Just because it would just be too heavy otherwise, & I like my vegetables.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/07/2021 22:28

I only serve it with anther vegetable, usually peas. But mine has always has loads of mash on top.

Baked beans are always a good addition in the pie IMO. Almost compulsory in this house.

NotMyCat · 30/07/2021 22:33

HP sauce, pickled cabbage. Maybe a slice of crusty bread and butter for mopping

MockneyReject · 30/07/2021 22:38

I don't get the no roast potatoes with mashed, thing. Surely, you don't have just roast potatoes with, say, a big Sunday dinner? I always do both roast and mashed. I thought that was perfectly normal. Similarly, I would do roast potatoes with (vegetarian version) of Shepherd's/cottage pie. And veg, of course.

MartyHart · 30/07/2021 22:42

Pickled red cabbage and carrot and swede. Also gravy.

StevieNix · 30/07/2021 22:42

Ynbu, I bloody love carbs but I wouldn’t have any extra with shepherds/cottage pie as there is mash on top obviously. I usually do something like broccoli on the side as there’s peas and carrots in the filling.
Husband likes baked beans with his, and if he’s starving he has been known to grab a slice of buttered bread with it but I wouldn’t serve bread with it as standard.

Looubylou · 30/07/2021 22:47

Carrots and peas and extra gravy. However, I have had it with chips in a canteen and it was divine.

Belledan1 · 30/07/2021 22:59

I put onions, mushrooms, carrots and peas with the mince. If I am trying to not to have too much carbs I make my portion with a small bit of mash mixed with carrots and swede on top. Normally serve it with broccoli. Family have normal mash. . Dont like it with beans but each to own. Friend does it with beans and makes mash really cheesy.

I think that is quite unusual - I would only do roast potatoes with a roast dinner. Mash I do with stews or something like beef wellington. I know quite a lot of people do roasties and mash for a special occasion like xmas.
hellcatspangle · 30/07/2021 23:13

Just have veg with mine

TheLoveOfMoney · 30/07/2021 23:16

There are carbs in every food, peas are quite carby, if you want zero carbs you're left with water.

shas19 · 30/07/2021 23:19

I could eat potatoes till the sun was splitting the trees but not with shepherds pie. Crusty buttered bread tho!
