To Think You Don’t Need Carbs With Shepherds Pie?

Looking at a thread on Facebook asking for accompaniments to shepherds pie and loads of people were suggesting things like garlic bread, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkies etc. All quite heavy when the dish already has mash on top. Somebody even suggested coleslaw! ( And yes I know that’s not carbs!) If I have shepherd’s pie, all I serve with it is peas or another green vegetable.

I either put. Finely diced carrots , mushrooms, leeks/onions in with the mince with a mashed potato top or forego the carrots and top it with carrot swede and potato mash. Always served with green veg. My DF loves it with COLD baked beans and a slice of bread. That's not how it gets served up and he'll happily eat the veg, but if there are leftovers in the freezer and DM's out for the evening I can guarantee that's what he'll have for dinner.

Garlic bread?! The dirty bastards Grin

I just serve greens with Shepherds pie. Although I make roast and mashed potatoes with a roast dinner because just roast potato is stingy and disappointing IMO.

Whilst broadly correct, you lack knowledge.

Peas are not a vegetable. They are legumes and they are carbs.

Coleslaw is mainly carbs -- cabbage, carrots and onions are all carbs.

Dogoodfeelgood · 30/07/2021 23:44

Totally agree with you! I like it with a simple salad like iceberg lettuce and cherry tomatoes.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 30/07/2021 23:52

I’d have broccoli. More for the change in the texture. It’s all too soft otherwise.

DHs family would have chips and bread with it 🤢

WingingItSince1973 · 31/07/2021 00:02

@Xmassprout

My husband sometimes has buttered bread with his, i don't normally have anything else
Oh yes thats delicious 😋
SpindleWhorl · 31/07/2021 00:13

People have lost sight of what normal portions of food-related clichés look like in this country.

Timetoreflect · 31/07/2021 00:16

For my son I’d do a couple of Yorkies too but the only other side i’d serve is buttered and braised cabbage

Salad with Shepherds Pie?

CorvusPurpureus · 31/07/2021 00:25

I'd go with green veg - steamed broccoli or spinach.

Admittedly I'd probably be the only one eating the sides. I'd probably add frozen peas for the greens refusers.

There's shitloads of stealth veg in my shepherd's pie to start with, mind you! I'm probably blurring the cottage pie boundaries here because it's generally made from left over beef chilli, which is made with homemade tomato sauce, which incorporates the contents of the fridge.

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/07/2021 00:30

Has to be topped with potato, carrot and swede mash and a sprinkle of cheese too. Peas on the side as they get too squishy cooked in it.

I have had chips with it in a pub once and it was delicious. Wouldn't do it at home though.

PattyPan · 31/07/2021 00:31

Yanbu, cabbage or something like that on the side but garlic bread, chips, and roast potatoes belong nowhere near a shepherds/cottage pie and I say that as an otherwise big fan of all of them. And people who think it goes with coleslaw should be banned from cooking 🤢

Totallydefeated · 31/07/2021 00:36

Coleslaw?! Completely the wrong register.

I like it with a green veg like broccoli or runner beans or green beans, to liven it up a bit. I find it a bit dull by itself.

JohnnyLuLus · 31/07/2021 00:38

Definitely don't need more carbs with shepherd's pie.

But I knew someone who ate lasagne sandwiched between two slices of white bread. Grim.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 31/07/2021 00:50

I really REALLY want shephards pie now.

For me, the pie is topped with cheddar mash and served with savoy cabbage an loads of gravy, to be mopped up with buttered bread at the end.

I do get Yorkshires though- its just the same as having them on a roast dinner with potatoes.

Never had it with pickled cabbage, I'm all over that suggestion!!

I love a carb, but I can never get my head around chips with pasta. Frankie and Bennys always offer chips or salad with their pasta. No way could I eat a load of chips with pasta! And as a teen I worked in the BHS canteen- people wound get macaroni cheese with chips and garlic bread! Same with lasagne or cottage pie. Madness!

WineInTheBlood · 31/07/2021 00:53

Yeah YANBU - it's already pure delicious stodge, it would never occur to me to add more carbs.

echt · 31/07/2021 00:59

Not RTFT, but vegetables of all kinds are carbs.

PlasticEgg · 31/07/2021 01:04

Unacceptable eating choices such as this is exactly why the glorious + heroic NHS is on its knees. ON ITS KNEES.

Grenlei · 31/07/2021 01:05

DP likes to put his in a sandwich 😂 but aside from that no other carbs.

In fact when I'm eating more healthily than I am now, I make the top from a mix of swede, carrot and squashes rather than potato. Served with lots of leafy green veg.

alibongo5 · 31/07/2021 01:08

@Notonthestairs

Salad with Shepherds Pie?
Totally agree. Absolute heresy.
Mockolate · 31/07/2021 02:29

If we have shepherds pie here it's usually with peas and salad.

noodlezoodle · 31/07/2021 02:38

@NeverDropYourMooncup

If they need to add extra carbs, they've completely failed at the Sufficient Mash stage.

Should be carrots, steamed swede, peas, cabbage or any other veg to provide a counterpoint to the rich, oniony, thick gravy, meat and the mounds of billowing, fluffy mashed potatoes.

That description makes me think you're either Nigella or Dervla Kirwen using her best M&S advert voice.

It also made me very hungry Grin

Spidey66 · 31/07/2021 02:46

No you just need veg. The mash is the carb.

Blinkingheckythump · 31/07/2021 03:01

Who the f has salad with cottage pie?! Salad with gravy? No I refuse to accept this. It's on par with coleslaw and gravy. Nope no no.
I usually serve mine without a side as it's got meat, veg and potato in it. It's an entire meal. Always with cheese on and extra gravy mind. I'm bloody hungry now 😹

RatsolutelyFabulous · 31/07/2021 03:11

The veg gets mixed in with the mince, it’s an all in one meal? Why add veg on the side when you can just include it? I always add peas, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower in mine.

If I was having anything on the side, it would be Yorkshire puddings. Although, my dad once made a banging Shepard’s pie for my birthday and put cauli cheese on top of the mash, it was unreal and you can’t forget lots of thick gravy either Grin
