What is the WORST pain you've ever had?

Personally, toothache (constant background throb with searing white hot stabs that made me feel like I was being electrocuted in my skull every few seconds) gets the award for absolute worst ever. Two frozen shoulders, and adenomyosis that used to regularly have me puking and fainting and almost hallucinating on the bathroom floor are strong contenders - but miles behind. There is just something about vicious toothache that makes it the worst.

Contemplating this as just back from the dentist, where at least for now, things were ok this time Grin

What about you?

Fractured coccyx
Acute cystitis followed by kidney infection

All 4 pretty awful but childbirth probably the worst followed by the scaphoid fracture

Boobahs · 28/07/2021 22:59
 • Gallstones
 • Having the doctor try to break my waters despite them hardly being able to reach them during a 5 day failed induction
 • Trigeminal neuralgia after severe Bell's Palsy
RavingAnnie · 28/07/2021 22:59

@tnetenba

Not very serious but honestly stubbing my toe. Can you imagine that level of pain but sustained over hours, horrific! The saving grace is that it only ever hurts for a short while.

I do get some funny looks when I describe labour as 'not as bad as stubbing your toe' Grin.

This quote just completely validated what I always say, that the experience of childbirth pain is different for everyone. I can categorically say that my childbirth pain is about a million times worse than stubbing your toe! And to another PP, the pain of crowning was insignificant compared to the pain of contractions which was unbelievably bad. The crowning was painful but copable pain (for me).

My mum always said that childbirth was like an extremely bad stomach pain. Mine was nothing like that. My whole body hurt. It was everywhere.

DramaAlpaca · 28/07/2021 23:00

Sinusitis for me.

In comparison, giving birth was a doddle.

BillywigSting · 28/07/2021 23:00

Either a wisdom tooth abscess, rip roaring bacterial tonsillitis, torn achillies tendon or sciatica.

Probably sciatica. It was utterly blinding and all consuming.

All beat a 26 hour back to back induced labour which was pretty excruciating. Though I have a feeling the endometriosis periods might have actually helped make that one feel less like I was dying (despite the fact I nearly did).

I find it strange though, that the condition that is least likely to actually kill me out of that list, is the most painful, and the one that nearly did, though while still very very painful doesn't even come close to the same level of pain.

SkankingMopoke · 28/07/2021 23:01

Uterine rupture
Kidney infection
Burst ovarian cyst

In that order. I have had various accidents, illnesses and operations over the years, but these are the only 3 that had me feeling like I was about to die (I was pretty close with the rupture TBF).

peonyjam · 28/07/2021 23:01

Bartholins cyst/abscess. It was so agonising that several shots of morphine barely took the edge off. The only pain relief was when it ruptured and by then I had so much morphine in my system I was violently sick for days.

BikeRunSki · 28/07/2021 23:02

It’s a toss up between uterine rupture and dental abcess.

thewreckingcrew · 28/07/2021 23:02

I'd go with leg cramp that wakes you in the night too. I think because of the suddenness of it. One minute peacefully asleep, next minute shouting in pain. It always scares the living daylights out of DH as well Grin

JudgeJ · 28/07/2021 23:03

Coccyx damage when I fell ice skating, never heard of it until then, that was 50 years ago and since then I find It very uncomfortable to stand still for long periods or to bend over slightly rather than all of the way.

Durbeyfield · 28/07/2021 23:04

Sciatica is coming through as the winner here - followed closely by gallstones I think. I haven’t counted…

I guess the sciatic nerve is so big it’s going to hurt a lot if something goes wrong. (I’ve not had medical training, for anyone who is wondering).

Atla · 28/07/2021 23:07

Oooo. Back labour with DC1 and dental abscess.

danadas · 28/07/2021 23:07

Post dural headache following an epidural. I have honestly never felt anything like it before, I felt like my head was going to explode.

After that I would say TMJD pain, childbirth, abscess

Elys3 · 28/07/2021 23:08

Trigeminal neuralgia is just awful

Sugarplumfairy65 · 28/07/2021 23:09

When I had a large tumour pressing on my spine. It got so painful that I could no longer walk

pollyglot · 28/07/2021 23:10

Anal abscess, dental abscess, childbirth.

Gooseysgirl · 28/07/2021 23:11

Back labour.. without a shadow of a doubt

MyCatDribbles · 28/07/2021 23:12

@peachpearplum01

A twisted fibroid - much much worse than childbirth!
I had a twisted fibroid, wow that was so bad. Writhing around in pain and groaning on the hospital bed.

But childbirth was on another level - screaming in pain I was. I did have to be induced though and after 2 days of labour went from 1cm to 10cm in 3 hours so I think that’s why

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 28/07/2021 23:13
@hopingforourrainbowbaby so sorry for your losses Flowers
Thank you

Happymum12345 · 28/07/2021 23:13

Toothache. Root canal & an infection-Blooming awful. Labour pains aren’t great either!

baldafrique · 28/07/2021 23:14

@imaginethemdragons
Absolutely. The most hideous pain. I vomited for hours it was so bad.

Midwife1997 · 28/07/2021 23:16

Pancreatitis - I had a bad reaction to prescribed medication. Oh my life was it grim.

Midwife

OnTheBrink1 · 28/07/2021 23:19

Burst appendix - natural childbirth and cessation is a breeze in comparison. Intravenous morphine doesn’t touch the sides.
Very bad migraine also ranks up there

theworldhasgoneinsane · 28/07/2021 23:19

In this order.

Childbirth (both of them equally horrific)
Appendicitis
An anaesthetic injection into my big toe before nail removal

Opal93 · 28/07/2021 23:23

Sciatica, labour, bust open c section wound, spinal leak headache from spinal block
