Has anyone had an iPhone actually last 3 years?

I've always had Samsung but 2.5 years ago I had my head turned by the Apple Watch and purchased an XR. In the last month, My phone screen freezes, the battery is shit and it only charges when it wants.

I didn't mind spending loads (if I remember it was £5/6/700) on it because i figured I would keep it for years. At the time, they were advertising three year contracts so I also thought that would be a minimum time.

I thought they had been banned from affecting performance so I don't know why this is happening. I paid the contract off early so maybe o2 are doing something to me 😂

Is it just me or is it common?

I still prefer Samsung but I don't want to waste the money selling my Apple stuff and replacing.

Me and husband - both at 5 years now!

FenceSplinters · 27/07/2021 21:33

I’ve had my iPhone for over four years now. I had a new battery put in it recently, which cost about £50.

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 21:33

Nope - mine seem to deteriorate majorly between 18 and 24 months

Pantene23 · 27/07/2021 21:33

Yes, I’ve had mine about four years now.

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 21:34

My iPad on the other hand, I’ve had for 4 years and it’s still going strong

Clovacloud · 27/07/2021 21:35

Mines at 4 years now, seems to be fine. The longest we had one last was 6 years, when I gave my daughter an old one.

Foolsrule · 27/07/2021 21:36

Yes, got an old iPhone 4 that is ten years old and I let DD use occasionally. Just charged it and put a new SIM in a few weeks back. Works fine for calls, texts and taking the odd pic (yr 6, for occasional long days out with others). DH has an iPhone 6 that is around 5 years old and I have an 8 that I got three years ago. We also have a couple of old iPads that have got to be 7-8 years old and the kids use them for films/games. Our iPads are newer (kids have out old ones) but mine must be 4 years old at least. So long as they keep on going so long, we’re happy to keep worshipping at the church of Apple 🍏

Shadedog · 27/07/2021 21:37

Had mine 5 years. Battery is rubbish, charging isn’t reliable, it randomly shuts off and won’t come on again until the charger is put in. So, yes, it’s “lasted” but it’s crap.

Finzi · 27/07/2021 21:37

Yes, I got an iPhone 6 in early 2015 and only replaced it at the end of last year, mainly because the battery was failing (sample size of 1 though, it was my first iPhone. I’m not convinced the battery in my new one is going to last as well though).

plodalong12 · 27/07/2021 21:37

I just recently (this month) replaced my iphone6 that I bought in 2015.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/07/2021 21:38

I have an iphone 5Se we bought 2016, originally was ds's, then dh had for a year and it's now mine. Dh now has an I phone 7, which was bought for ds in 2017.

Batteries fine on both, never had any problems. When the covers and screen protectors are off they both look like new.

plodalong12 · 27/07/2021 21:38

@finzi
Did you replace it with an SE 2020?

Crikeyalmighty · 27/07/2021 21:39

I’ve had my iPhone 6 for 5 years and it’s still fine although you can’t update to latest iOS— I have an iPad that’s 8 years and still works fine apart from not supporting the latest iOS

Senorasurf · 27/07/2021 21:40

I'm 5 years on my current one (dh had it for 2.5 years and I have been using it another 2.5 years).

The microphone is going dodgy now so I imagine I'll upgrade shortly.

gogohm · 27/07/2021 21:40

Made it to 2 years 11 months before the battery died, was too small capacity too

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 21:41

Oh wow. Aré a small percentage of us doing something massively wrong then???

My old 6s was replaced at 5 years old last year. I had it for 3 years and then DD had it. My XR is nearing the 3 year mark and fingers crossed it lasts as I am not planning on replacing it for at least another year.

TrickorTreacle · 27/07/2021 21:42

The biggest issue here isn't Apple vs Samsung, but because that the OP mentioned three year contracts.

Anyone entertaining the idea of paying £36/month for 3 years (thus a £1300 handset) is being very VERY U!

It's an avoidable expense if you can just buy a semi decent handset for £400. Go interest-free Paypal credit if needed and then be done with it. Pick a 12-month sim free deal for £6/month.

Starjammer · 27/07/2021 21:43

Mine have always lasted. I think I got 5 years out of the last one and only upgraded because I wanted more space - it still worked fine.

AliMonkey · 27/07/2021 21:43

My first one lasted about 8 years and was still working but couldn't update to latest iOS so I was starting to think there might be a security risk, so I bought a newer one for £80 (but still ancient according to my teenagers) off my god-daughter who was upgrading and expect that to last me a good few years.

Deux · 27/07/2021 21:43

Never any problems here. iPhones cycle through DH then the DCs then we sell them 🤷🏻‍♀️

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 27/07/2021 21:43

We always buy secondhand and get sim-only contracts. When an adult gets a newer one, the old ones get passed down through the kids. Youngest teen has an iPhone 6 which works fine, and has to be 5 years old now? It’s probably had a new battery at some point though

Starjammer · 27/07/2021 21:44

Oh and yes I have an iPad that's 8 years old and still works! It struggles with some newer apps but DD uses it for Peppa Pig World and other stuff and it works fine.

LysistrataVickers · 27/07/2021 21:44

I've got an iPhone XS which I have had for three years in September and it's perfectly fine. Even the battery is fine. Watch it break now!!

I do get a bit Hmm when people say theirs only lasts for a few years and then stops working. I think “what are you doing to it!?” But then I also have tops from Primark that are over seven years old despite reading repeated claims they only last a few washes before they get holes in them which I’ve never understood either!
