Has anyone had an iPhone actually last 3 years?

I've always had Samsung but 2.5 years ago I had my head turned by the Apple Watch and purchased an XR. In the last month, My phone screen freezes, the battery is shit and it only charges when it wants.

I didn't mind spending loads (if I remember it was £5/6/700) on it because i figured I would keep it for years. At the time, they were advertising three year contracts so I also thought that would be a minimum time.

I thought they had been banned from affecting performance so I don't know why this is happening. I paid the contract off early so maybe o2 are doing something to me 😂

Is it just me or is it common?

I still prefer Samsung but I don't want to waste the money selling my Apple stuff and replacing.

My middle child has my old 6S. She's had it almost 2 years. Before that, eldest DD had it for two years until I got an upgrade and gave her my 8. I'd had it for two years myself before I got my 8. So it's nearly 6 years old and still going strong.

copperboomcopperboom · 27/07/2021 22:00

3 yrs then replaced battery, now 4 yrs. no issues now

cabingirl · 27/07/2021 22:01

Mine is about 4 years old and I gave my old one to DD and it's still working - although the memory space and battery life on that one isn't great but it's still functional and that one is about 8 years old.

I had an iPhone 5s for 10 years! It still worked perfectly at 10 years but the iOS was too old to download the apps I wanted, that was the only reason I finally upgraded.

woodhill · 27/07/2021 22:02

Yes 5 years'

stripedbananas · 27/07/2021 22:02

I'm still using my iPhone 6 because it just keeps on going. I'll replace it once it gives up the ghost.

PatsyJStone · 27/07/2021 22:02

Yes, no problems with my phones, had a few. Mainly just the battery running out faster being an issue which ultimately made me decide to replace them.

iPad still going strong five years on. Had a problem with my watch face popping off, this was after 18 months. I researched and contacted Apple, got the face replaced at no charge. Family member had an iPad problem, it was over two years old but due to statutory rights and some other blurb in the small print, that was replaced.

ChocolateCakeYum · 27/07/2021 22:03

My 6s is still going strong.

Has a cracked screen now though so will be getting a newer phone for XMas.

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 22:03

@TrickorTreacle I hope people don't actually get them over that long but you're dead right. It's a crazy amount isn't it?!

I used o2 refresh so you get a contact and an interest free loan for the phone which you can pay off at any point. I got it over 2 years, which still feels excessive and paid it off in one or so.

My husband bought me mine for Christmas 2014. It’s fine.

Taliskerskye · 27/07/2021 22:05

I think there is a nee law about good lasting and not default dying
Maybe google it. I’m pretty sure it’s 7 years so unless you’ve fucked it up yourself Apple should fix it.
And if they say it’s up to O2
That’s bollocks

SusannaM · 27/07/2021 22:07

All DD and DH's Apple stuff has really lasted, we normally buy second hand too. Sometimes you have to take the pain of a hard reset to keep them moving along. My friend always whinges about technology running slow and being unreliable, but she never keeps on top of maintenance - never backs up so she can delete unwanted apps and photos, leaves tons of emails (opened and unopened) on the phone etc. Lets the storage run low.

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 22:07

@Starjammer me too. My mum is an habitual screen smasher. Over twenty years of getting out of a car after putting her phone on her knee as she prepares to get out of the car and she still forgets to move it.

I've never smashed a screen and I am clumsy enough to drop it.

And mine was an older cheaper model when I bought it (the cheapest) - they don't sell it anymore. But it's still up to date thank goodness
Considering upgrading in 1-2 yrs

CornishPastyDownUnder · 27/07/2021 22:08

Only purchase Samsung on the basis that they've lasted!Last phone still going(younger teen has it)its5years oldGrin..

wselesda · 27/07/2021 22:10

My iPhone SE (not the new model) is 4.5 years old. Battery doesn't last as long as when new but still going well.

thecapitalsunited · 27/07/2021 22:10

Another here with a 6s that lasted five years. I only replaced it because it was getting close to not being able to receive updates. I did replace the battery halfway through it’s life because I’m a heavy user and I tend to eat batteries. There’s not a lot that any phone manufacturer can do about batteries only being good for a certain number of charge cycles.

LemonadeFromLemons · 27/07/2021 22:13

I’m a typing using my iPhone se which I’ve dropped twice in water and purchased new in July 2017. I’d say it’s limping on now though, it does not hold its battery well at all.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 27/07/2021 22:16

An iPhone 5s that I bought new for my eldest has just been passed on to a friend’s daughter. It’s at least 6.5 years old. My xs max is coming up for three years old and still going strong. My boys have iPhone 7s, both passed down and at least 4 years old.

The only phone I’ve ever smashed was a Samsung. Despite case and screen protector I managed to shatter the screen and digitiser in spectacular fashion.

Chloemol · 27/07/2021 22:18

Yes, I did swap my phone this year, but I had it for 8 years and it only started loosing battery quickly this year

heygirlhey · 27/07/2021 22:18

Last iphone 4.5 years, current one is just over 2 years so far, iPad still going strong and almost 7 years old.

spanktastic · 27/07/2021 22:18

DS has my old iPhone 6+ for YouTube and gaming, 5 years old and still going strong, I have a 1 year old iPhone 11 and it still performs like it did when it was new.

SpiesRUs · 27/07/2021 22:19

My iphone is 5 years old and my ipad and macbook are 7 years old - battery life has suffered but other than that they work fine.

Whitney168 · 27/07/2021 22:20

Five years for my last one. No issues and great trade in price for it when I (very unusually for me!) just fancied an upgrade.

icedcoffees · 27/07/2021 22:21

Mine is 3.5 years old - the battery isn't as good as it once was but otherwise it works just fine.
