Has anyone had an iPhone actually last 3 years?

I've always had Samsung but 2.5 years ago I had my head turned by the Apple Watch and purchased an XR. In the last month, My phone screen freezes, the battery is shit and it only charges when it wants.

I didn't mind spending loads (if I remember it was £5/6/700) on it because i figured I would keep it for years. At the time, they were advertising three year contracts so I also thought that would be a minimum time.

I thought they had been banned from affecting performance so I don't know why this is happening. I paid the contract off early so maybe o2 are doing something to me 😂

Is it just me or is it common?

I still prefer Samsung but I don't want to waste the money selling my Apple stuff and replacing.

Can’t remember how old iPad is, but 6or 7 years. Battery lasting a bit less time now, but no issues with that either.

iMac did have the bad grace to die a year or so ago, but it was 10 years plus, never a problem or a virus.

tttigress · 27/07/2021 22:27

I always go for Android, si far I think about 4 years is the longest I have managed. They usually go after 2-3 though.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/07/2021 22:30

My one is 5. It has been fabulous.

No complaints here. ☺️

Unfashionable · 27/07/2021 22:31

My 6S is 5 years old & still going strong. It’s had a new battery, which cost me £25 from my local phone shop, it does everything I need it to and I will keep using it until it dies.

kitkatsky · 27/07/2021 22:31

Yes, if you barely use it. If you use it a lot then you need a battery replacement around the 1.5 year mark but they're not expensive

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 27/07/2021 22:32

Dh still uses a super old iPhone 3 as his alarm clock. Apart from a smashed screen it still works perfectly albeit as a brick phone given the updates since

MrsBungle · 27/07/2021 22:33

My xr is still going strong. Perfect condition. Dh has my old iPhone 7. It’s also totally fine.

Bluebells1 · 27/07/2021 22:34

Mine is on year 4, DH's is year 3.

MrsBungle · 27/07/2021 22:34

My xr nor the 7 has ever had a battery replacement. Nothing ever done to them.

IncessantNameChanger · 27/07/2021 22:35

My iPads are going strong at five years old and my last iPhone possibly lasted 5 years before the screen and battery had been replaced a few two many times. I wouldnt buy a new iphone or ipad, they are better value a few years old from CEX.

My Samsung was much better value for cost / years of use. I think the new iPhones have more functionality than I would need anyway

Ireolu · 27/07/2021 22:35

No for me it was a 2 year max. Coming up to 3 years with my S9. Think may be able to stretch to 4 years which would be great but let's see.

Justanotherlurker · 27/07/2021 22:36

I think there is a nee law about good lasting and not default dying

It's about the right to repair, and most phones and tech will still have a default lifespan due to crtitical software patches (that apple apply just as much as android or windows before we get into that debate).

Depending on usage/battery maintenance, 3 years on a phone you will expect to see some loss of battery life, I would free up some storage, get rid of old apps and check some app permissions.

It isn't O2 it's that people don't treat phones as what they are which is essenitally a mini computer that can make phone calls, you have to still maintain them and most people don't, at a certain point though you are trying to keep an outdated Windows/Apple/Andriod OS whilst hoping you don't get hit with a known exploit.

I would suggest going through your apps/storage/battery maintenance for a week to refresh your phone though

Suzi888 · 27/07/2021 22:37

Depends on how often you use it and what you use it for. I’m sure streaming/watching videos wears them battery down more.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 27/07/2021 22:39

One of my kids uses my old 5 and another a 6 so yes they last.

pumpkinpie01 · 27/07/2021 22:40

I have had my I phone 6 about 3 years , my DH's I phone 11 has lasted 16 months , a malware problem that could not be sorted 😫

gwenneh · 27/07/2021 22:41

My DS is now using my old one, which is 5 years old. My other DS is using an iPad so old it still has the giant connector on it, so it's pre-2012.

MsAnnFrope · 27/07/2021 22:42

Yep I’ve had 2 iPhones over a 10 year period. One was DH old iPhone5 and then 3 years ago I got a 7. Recently had a new battery which was £25. I bought outright and got cheap sim deal for £10ish a month including a huge amount of data as I needed this for work travel.
I wouldn’t have a long contract where I was paying monthly for the phone if I could avoid it.

AlmostSummer21 · 27/07/2021 22:45

iPhone 6s 2015 - touch wood no issues

Except rubbish battery. I have a couple if battery packs for days out where I won't be able to plug my charger in 💁🏻‍♀️

I may have helped kill the battery by not using it until the charge ran out, but instead continually charging it.

GlencoraP · 27/07/2021 22:45

Currently using my XR which is two years old , ds has my old Iphone 7 which is at least 4 years old

TheDogsMother · 27/07/2021 22:47

I've had this XR since they first came out and my previous one was a 6S so ages between the two. DP had a 6S until I wrestled it off him to buy a 12. We still have the first model of iPad which is ancient along with a current iPad Pro. I do get the occasional screen freeze on the iPhone XR but guessing that's a software fix needed. There is a very quick fix to this if you Google it.

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 22:47

Batteries seem quite cheap. I might look i to that. Mine is apparently at 88% but won't last a day even if I barely touch it.

I've just done an update. See how that goes. There is a lot of shit on it too.

I pay for iCloud but I have no idea how to delete stuff from my phone and have it only in the cloud. That would help I think. I have 8k photos.

I am on four years now with my iPhone 7. I did replace the battery late last year though when it started to struggle to hold charge. It works perfectly now.

Terhou · 27/07/2021 22:51

Four years so far. Also had my MacBook Air for around eight years and it's still way better than my two year old Microsoft desktop.

EarlGreywithLemon · 27/07/2021 22:52

Yes, I recently replaced mine after just over three years. It was actually working fine, no battery issues. I changed it because I cracked the back pretty badly almost immediately after I got it, and after three years I was getting fed up of it looking a mess. Also, I use it a lot to take photos and l gave in to the lure of a better camera.

WelshWhisky · 27/07/2021 22:52

I’m using DD’s cast off iPhone. She upgraded after using it for 4 years. I’ve been using it for around 18 months now. It works fine.
