Has anyone had an iPhone actually last 3 years?

I've always had Samsung but 2.5 years ago I had my head turned by the Apple Watch and purchased an XR. In the last month, My phone screen freezes, the battery is shit and it only charges when it wants.

I didn't mind spending loads (if I remember it was £5/6/700) on it because i figured I would keep it for years. At the time, they were advertising three year contracts so I also thought that would be a minimum time.

I thought they had been banned from affecting performance so I don't know why this is happening. I paid the contract off early so maybe o2 are doing something to me 😂

Is it just me or is it common?

I still prefer Samsung but I don't want to waste the money selling my Apple stuff and replacing.

I have an original se doing fine after 4.5 years.

DH changed the battery in his iPhone 6 and in a friend's and gave them both a new lease of life!

@AlmostSummer21

iPhone 6s 2015 - touch wood no issues

Except rubbish battery. I have a couple if battery packs for days out where I won't be able to plug my charger in 💁🏻‍♀️

I may have helped kill the battery by not using it until the charge ran out, but instead continually charging it.

Mine was like this (iPhone 6s) until I paid for a new battery and it’s much better again!
EssentialHummus · 27/07/2021 22:54

My old 6 is now with the in-laws and still going strong. They also have a 12+ yo MacBook, only getting replaced now. We have a lot of tech in this house because of DH’s work. Much as I want to talk down about Apple I think they take product quality seriously.

If anyone could help me stop losing AirPods though…

HarrietOh · 27/07/2021 22:55

iPhone XS 2 years now and no issues. It says my battery health is 88% now and I haven’t noticed any decline in the charge it holds really.

Also I’m another one who has never smashed a phone screen! Dropped my phone plenty but amazed and how many people live with smashed screens.

godmum56 · 27/07/2021 22:55

my oldest is 13 years old. i keep it as a PAYG spare. My ipad is around the same age but weighs a ton so I prefer my mini.

DoTheNextRightThing · 27/07/2021 22:56

My older ones seemed to last longer than my newer ones. I had a 5C which truly did just die, battery wouldn't charge, it took 10 full minutes to open an app (I know bc I tried to open FB messenger to tell my friend I was on my way to meet her and by the time I got the app open, I was already there!). It got to the point that I would plug it in to charge and the battery would still go down.

My 8 also went wonky and wouldn't hold a battery after around 3 years. It also would overheat constantly. Unfortunately, replaced it with an SE2020 and it's doing exactly the same 🙄

My old iPhone 3 and 4 were great though! They lasted a good 5 years each, and still work now although I don’t use them anymore.

EarlGreywithLemon · 27/07/2021 22:57

@Terhou

Four years so far. Also had my MacBook Air for around eight years and it's still way better than my two year old Microsoft desktop.
Our MacBook is also eight years old and working perfectly. I actually still have my first MacBook , bought in 2017. It’s the white design. The battery is dead, but bar that it still works fine. I don’t use it anymore but I refuse to throw it out; it was such a great computer and the first one I bought myself.
EarlGreywithLemon · 27/07/2021 22:59

That was meant to say 2007, not 2017!

Mistymountain · 27/07/2021 22:59

My iPhone lasted just over 1 year, but I was having to do frequent hard resets from the beginning. Complete waste of money, back to Android ever since

Justanotherlurker · 27/07/2021 23:00

Batteries seem quite cheap. I might look i to that. Mine is apparently at 88% but won't last a day even if I barely touch it.

Then you need to look at your app management, it is suprising how much apps use both in data and battery usage, as an aside it is recommended but always ignored that lithium batteries need to be run down to 0 every now and then before a charge.

I pay for iCloud but I have no idea how to delete stuff from my phone and have it only in the cloud. That would help I think. I have 8k photos.

Depending on your storage that isn't going to help with screen freeze etc, also remember that once you upload to the icloud you need to remove from your phone not just a backup, also rememeber that once you go icloud you have succumbed to being a product of apple as per their business model.

Some people are not treating modern phones as what they are, no way I would let my DS, elderly relative on an out of date smartphone, some people have really bought into the idea that apple is not effected by viruses/hacks.

NumberTheory · 27/07/2021 23:00

I had my first for 3 years, my second for 2 years, my third for nearly 6 years and now I'm on my fourth which I've had for nearly 3. but will likely replace soon as screen cracked.

The 6 year old one was getting difficult to use after the 5th year. I haven't really had problems at 3 years, though. I've replaced batteries and I keep the memory fairly clean.

NoMoreCovidPlease · 27/07/2021 23:01

Yep had my iPhone for 4.5 years now, looking to change for a better camera but the phone is fine. My mum has had her iPhone 8 since 2017.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 27/07/2021 23:01

Apple iPhones should normally last for at least three years from new if well cared for and not a heavy power user.

There is obviously built in obsolescence as with every high technology product given the rapid increase in technological advancement etc. But there is the right to repair initiatives for access to older original spare parts for repairs but I understand this is not for mobile smartphones but just large household white goods etc.

The Apple fitted battery is normally the weak link being both comparatively under powered and fast to degrade and so may need replacement within three years to ensure optimal performance. I tend to hand down older 4G iPhones to family or for backup usage etc. The Apple software and smartwatch combination is the main attraction (although I prefer normal proper wristwatch than a micro smartphone on a wrist) plus possibly slightly better electronic security. The Apple photography is acceptable but surpassed by the higher specification newer Android flagships such as Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra which is my current main daily use smartphone that I would highly recommend if just for the photography edge. Check out www.dxomark.com/category/smartphone-reviews/ as photography is the main difference between smartphones these days!

Current 8+ 3.5 years - dropped and smashed last week

MahMahMahMahCorona · 27/07/2021 23:04

iPhone 12 mini here less than a month old - I have to charge it overnight, every night. 🤬

Justanotherlurker · 27/07/2021 23:07

Four years so far. Also had my MacBook Air for around eight years and it's still way better than my two year old Microsoft desktop.

That is an old meme that isn't relevant any more.

There is no difference in 0 day exploits, OS management etc, the difference is that Microsoft don't instill forced end of life into thier products.

Get back to the early 2010's as it really isn't relevant which you consider best any more.

tenredthings · 27/07/2021 23:08

My iPhone 6 lasted 5 years. It's still working fine but there's not enough storage. I got an iPhone X it's so crap in comparison, screen broke, back broke, rubbish microphone, it bugs and I really miss the speaker plug.

NumberTheory · 27/07/2021 23:08

@OnlyCans

Batteries seem quite cheap. I might look i to that. Mine is apparently at 88% but won't last a day even if I barely touch it.

I've just done an update. See how that goes. There is a lot of shit on it too.

I pay for iCloud but I have no idea how to delete stuff from my phone and have it only in the cloud. That would help I think. I have 8k photos.

Assuming we don't have different set ups for some reason - Make sure your iCloud storage plan is big enough for all your photos and anything else you store there then in "Settings", under "Photos" click the button for "iCloud Photos" so it goes green. This means your iPhone will copy your photos to your iCloud account. Then click "Optimize iPhone Storage" (so there is a tick next to it instead of next to "Download and Keep Original). This should mean your iPhone will keep a smaller version of each photo on your phone and retrieve the larger version from your iCould account when you want to look at it.

This should make your photos available on your iCloud account (which is good for backup anyway) and shrink the amount of storage you use on your phone for photos. But if you have a lot of memory available on your phone, this won't help with your screen freezing.

LemonSwan · 27/07/2021 23:13

iphones hit and miss depending on model. Had many go to 5 year +. New iphone se is hardly working (calls break up/ cut off) just over a year.

mac laptops later than 2012 die very frequently (1-2 years). We have 6 dead in the cupboard whilst I type this on a 2010 thats going strong.

ipads an absolute trooper. 5 years +

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 23:18

@NumberTheory I got really excited when I read this but unfortunately, it's already ticked. 😓 mine is 128gb which I thought would be fine.

I had my last one for over 4 years

OnlyCans · 27/07/2021 23:22

It could be this. Does offload app mean the songs are only downloaded in the cloud?

Has anyone had an iPhone actually last 3 years?

My iPhone 5 is still going well, bought brand new in the Apple Store in 2012.

My iPad 2 was bought in 2012 too but that is very slow on, I use it as an e-reader now.

LemonSwan · 27/07/2021 23:22

And can I say about the article above saying iphone SE camera is is 'good'. No it is not. Its absolutely fucking pants.

Lorw · 27/07/2021 23:23

Got my iPhone XR on release date and still going strong, never any problems with it, had my last iPhone (6) for 4 years before that Grin
