In brief, I ordered a side of nachos to go with my dinner. I'm bitterly disappointed. Before I share what arrived, what would the world of Mumsnet expect to receive? (Pretty sure IANBU to say that these are NOT nachos!!!!)

While that's exceedingly shit OP,

A huge plate of triangle corn "crisps" covered in cheese, tomato, chilli, sour cream, avocado and spring onions.

Some people's expectations of a SIDE of nachos is pretty high. The one described above would be more a sharing plate and cost £5-8 depending on the establishment.

For future I ALWAYS have in a bag or 2 of Lidl own brand tortilla chips that cost 40p each and sour cream has a long shelf life so always one of those in the fridge and of course cheese. Saves the need to ever spend £2.50 on 6p worth of Doritos 😆

speakout · 25/07/2021 17:58

Deoends where you are.
I don;t want to eat a plate of essentially crisps covered in cheese and toppings from a jar.
Good nachos are freshly fried cut tortillas, not crap from a bag.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/07/2021 17:59

Crap from a bag is my favourite food Smile

speakout · 25/07/2021 18:02

Crap from a bag is my favourite food
I am happy for you then.
A bag of doritos and dinner is fixed.

Fluffmum · 25/07/2021 18:39

Corn chips with guacamole, salsa and sour cream with melted cheese on top

ChelleMum85 · 25/07/2021 18:48

Where did you order them from? eBay!? 😂

AppleKatie · 25/07/2021 18:52

Good nachos are freshly fried cut tortillas, not crap from a bag.

Have you got a recipe for what you mean? I’ve just been looking and even luxury steak nachos recipes start with ‘open the packet of corn chips’

Benjispruce5 · 25/07/2021 18:57

Lol.

pollymere · 25/07/2021 19:49

As a side, probably just some Dorito-type crisp in a bowl. Corn chips rather than fried tortilla.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/07/2021 19:52

Are the blue corn tortilla chips from Amazon also crap from a bag?
Clearly I need to know as I'd hate to be eating non authentic food.

RightYesButNo · 25/07/2021 19:56

What do you call cheese that isn’t yours?
Nacho cheese.

So, it would appear, OP, you got nacho cheese… and nacho guacamole… and nacho sour cream… nacho tomatoes…

ArabellaScott · 25/07/2021 20:02

@PeapodBurgundy

Tortilla chips. Not a fecking thing else!
Sad
Brendabigbaps · 25/07/2021 20:02

I had a corker the other week. The nachos was basically a dried out wrap cut in strips, Unmelted grated cheese and plain yogurt!

I had to make myself proper nachos when I got home to try and forget!

Chocolatehamper · 25/07/2021 20:12

@PeapodBurgundy

It was a side dish from a take away (the mauve fluff is my living room rug where they've been dumped with disgust while we got the rest of dinner out of the packaging).

They were £2.50 (as opposed to the 80p they charge for a bag of Doritos in the snack section). The menu said 'Nachos' with no further description.

I'll be mentioning the misleading description in the review...

So they've effectively charged you the equivalent of corkage - £1.70 to open the bag of Doritos for you!
WombatChocolate · 25/07/2021 20:33

Even Subway, who do literally open an individual bag of Doritos in front of you, do nachos better.

I've watched them open one of those small individual bags, shake them into a small box, sprinkle some cheese, throw some jalapeños and then squirt a bit of salsa. They shove it in their hot oven they warm the sandwiches in for 1 minute and...bingo....a cheap version of nachos for about £1.75 if I recall. There's no sour cream, no Guacomole but there is lots of melted cheese and salsa ...so it is okay in my book.

This though.......id ring up and complain.

tallduckandhandsome · 25/07/2021 20:36

YABU not to call and ask for a refund.

SherbrookeFosterer · 25/07/2021 21:28

You should have gone to a JD Wetherspoons.

I went once and they served up my body with in nachos with various condiments and sauces. Plus I got change out of a fiver, I think.

The only downside was I found it difficult too get up and "out" of my chair afterwards, alas.

SherbrookeFosterer · 25/07/2021 21:28

*bodyweight I meant to write, apologies.

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 25/07/2021 23:34

Good lord! 🤦🏻‍♀️ WTAF!

Reminds me of the time we went on a cheap night away with our eldest son, we ordered a takeaway to the room as it was late. My OH ordered a spaghetti carbonara. It was literally a tin of Heinz spaghetti (we knew this because it was uncut, long strands as Heinz is), with a few strands of grated cheese mixed through and some chopped up, tinned ham 😂😂😂 We were in absolute stitches at the brass neck of them (and the £7 charge) we were howling for days. We didn’t even complain, which we prob should have done, but we got our money’s worth from the comedy value 😂😂😂😂

Lokdok · 26/07/2021 08:39

@Haudyourwheesht

Nacho chips, loads of salsa, guacamole, grated cheese (possibly melted but not essential) a ton of sour cream.

I love nachos.

Never heard of nachos with cold cheese. Doesn’t it Just fall off?
userxx · 26/07/2021 09:15

Anybody else craving proper nachos! It's all I can think of.

LookItsMeAgain · 26/07/2021 09:58

@NoSleepTil

I had “Irish nachos” last night at my local faux Irish bar. House made crisps with meat and gravy from their version of shepherds pie on top. It really hit the spot after a few drinks
I have a few questions but let's start with the biggest one - what the blinking hell is a 'FAUX' Irish bar? Is that a British Bar?
FadoFado · 26/07/2021 10:23

Seriously. Have you never been in Prague/Boston/London and seen an 'Irish' bar called Molly Malones or O'Neills, decorated with random Irish bric a brac and playing Irish music?

That's a faux Irish bar.

LookItsMeAgain · 26/07/2021 10:36

@FadoFado - so if that's a 'faux' Irish bar in those places, what is an 'actual' Irish bar?

FadoFado · 26/07/2021 10:38

A bar in...

...

...Ireland.
