Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

@Canigooutyet

Shame name changes are allowed. Would be interesting to see the history of some saying none mask wearers are selfish, things like calpol and school, stomach bugs and ignoring the 48 hour stay at home policy etc.
I think you might be getting too emotionally involved! (And I'm someone who won't be wearing a mask.)
Whammyyammy · 19/07/2021 12:18
@Whammyyammy because the government have acted so well throughout 🙄🙄🙄
So ignore government advice, just use MN?

As in my post, it is now a PERSONAL choice to wear one or not.

Yes I wonder how many of these drama llama denouncing people not choosing to wear masks have previously at some point gone into work with a cold in the height of flu season, in the spirit of battling on or because they wouldn't be paid if they took the day off sick 🤔
TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:19

@Sugarandtime

Unfortunately I think this is going to create even more of a divide and hate between people. I do think a lot of people have been conditioned into wanting to wear masks now and as such think anyone who doesn’t is selfish. This seems to have been the case for a long time though judging by comments I’ve read over the last year from people who have been exempt but received abuse.

I don’t go out much so this isn’t going to affect me a lot. I suppose it just comes down to personal choice and responsibility at the end of the day.

I don't hate people that continue to wear masks. Their choice.

Why do the ones that wear them keep thinking they won't ever infect anyone, that they are working for the greater good in their actions, they aren't. They can still spread covid.

I think some just love the drama and calling names. Never grew up and covid has given them a calling and meaning to their life. Don't they get bored

UrAWizHarry · 19/07/2021 12:19
@UrAWizHarry because i wear one for 12 hours a day at work NHS. Most staff i know think they are pointless outside of a medical setting with people reusing them constantly and touching them constantly! Pointless exercise.
Whether you think they are pointless is beside the point though, when it comes to the argument of "I'll just go elsewhere".

If you need to go to a shop that mandates masks, the only person you are inconvieniencing by refusing to stick one on is yourself. Just feels like you are spiting yourself for no good reason.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 19/07/2021 12:19

I've just got back from the shops, everyone was wearing a mask apart from one man.

It doesn't bother me wearing one, I am asthmatic and do struggle a bit with the breathing however it makes other people feel more comfortable.

My DM is clinically vulnerable and so nervous about going out which does make me more aware I think about how other people may be feeling.

It's upto you OP, you may be prevented from some shops but then again it's your choice.

Canigooutyet · 19/07/2021 12:20

Emotionally involved that's funny.

Lovemusic33 · 19/07/2021 12:20

Not sure what the point was of OP starting this thread other than to tell the world that she won’t be wearing a face mask, did we really need to be told? We all now have a choice, my choice will be to wear one in shops because I respect that others maybe vulnerable.

KaptainKaveman · 19/07/2021 12:21

@Frittataz

I get what you’re saying but to call me selfish for wanting to do something I’m legally allowed to do is bit harsh.
You could adopt this line of argument if the new rules were not so lunatic. But they are as we all know. Numbers are soaring and the education system is in total freefalling chaos. So is the travel industry.

Businesses are attempting to make the best of the appalling void in leadership in England by asking people to wear masks for a bit longer. Anyone who refuses just because they feel like it - that's you, OP - is clearly selfish, a bit dim and out for a fight. We could really do with fewer people like that.

This is going to be really awful for all shop staff - the abuse and aggression is going to multiply hugely. I hope the OP feels proud to be contributing to that.

Parker231 · 19/07/2021 12:22

Masks should never have been dropped until clinically vulnerable children have had the opportunity to have the vaccine. Their lives have been affected more than others.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 12:23

This is going to be really awful for all shop staff - the abuse and aggression is going to multiply hugely.

This could be 100% avoided - all it takes is shop staff NOT challenging people. As they have no right or obligation to do.

DancesWithTortoises · 19/07/2021 12:23

The mask dodgers I know are tories and thick as shit, at that.

Elphame · 19/07/2021 12:23

I didn't wear mine shopping this morning. So nice to be able to wear my glasses again and see what I'm doing and read the labels.

I'll respect shops that still require them to be worn but I will choose to shop elsewhere.

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 12:24

@SpindleWhorl give over? Er no it's a real problem

Why were security guards employed in the first place? Not to police covid

peachgreen · 19/07/2021 12:25

I'll still be wearing mine. And I'm definitely feeling more reluctant to go out considering all the people who now won't be (although thankfully I'm in NI where they're still a legal requirement). I'll also still be social distancing and will be avoiding busy places.

I live with someone with long Covid and I would do anything to avoid it. The impact it has had on his life is horrific.

Canigooutyet · 19/07/2021 12:25

If your struggling to breathe why carry on?
I've never understood that logic of potentially making yourself ill for what?
I can only talk about myself, but I absolutely hate getting blue lighted due to asthma. I do everything I can to avoid not being able to breathe.

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:25

This is my point when I say that masks are quite pointless.
Some people feel they are saving lifes by wearing a flimsy bit of cloth obviously aren't aware of the miniscule size of viruses.
It does make some feel they are leading the way in life saving though, and others just LOVE the selfish word GrinGrinHmm

Kanaloa · 19/07/2021 12:25

Is it honestly that much of a huge hassle for most people? Of all the rubbish we’ve had to do over the last year or two the masks aren’t where I’d draw my line in the sand.

I do work in a very busy retail environment though so will continue to wear a mask. I don’t mind if others do or don’t, but I know many customers still are so I’ll wear mine as I don’t know the situations of who I’m serving.

Where will you shop?

Retail trust has advised all CEO's to still have a requirement/strongly suggest/ for mask wearing and so far all retailers do ... after all, their employees are sitting ducks and cannot work from home

So where will you shop?

HalzTangz · 19/07/2021 12:27

@Wanttocry

The world is watching aghast at this dreadful experiment Boris has decided to conduct in the uk.

This is a bit dramatic isn’t it? Plenty of states in the US have dropped masks and have cases that are rising. I’m not saying that’s the right call, but there was no worldwide “aghast-ness” at it.

TBF excluding USA pretty much every country is appalled at Boris decision, he's not only putting the UK at risk, but also every country he allowing those in the UK to travel to
MissJeanBrodiesprime · 19/07/2021 12:27

You decision OP. I will be continuing to wear a mask when in shops / cinema etc. The risk is no less, it’s just that the government don’t want the responsibility.

UrAWizHarry · 19/07/2021 12:28

"Some people feel they are saving lifes by wearing a flimsy bit of cloth obviously aren't aware of the miniscule size of viruses. "

And some people aren't aware of how the virus is carried when you breath out or talk, evidently.

Yep the virus goes through the mask .... unless medical grade it really doesn't work
Rainbunny · 19/07/2021 12:31

The growing body of data on mask wearing shows some contradictory findings but overall I come away with the message that they are helpful, even if minimally so.

To be honest I'm far less concerned about mask wearing or not, In my (non-expert) opinion it is social distancing that is more effective at halting transmission. I'd prefer the government kept social distancing rules in place over mask wearing. Of course that's not possible on the tube or buses really, which I suppose is why the mask mandate will remain.

FixTheBone · 19/07/2021 12:31

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement so how can they do that? If I really wanted to I could simply lie and say that I’m exempt but why should I have to do that.
In the same way that a nightclub can insist on no trainers or jeans, or a restaurant could insist on collared shirts, any private premises or business can set whatever rules they feel like unless it impinges on something like the equality act or disability discrimination act.
