Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

I get what you’re saying but to call me selfish for wanting to do something I’m legally allowed to do is bit harsh

There are a thousand things you are legally allowed to do but that doesn't make them ok, does it?

UrAWizHarry · 19/07/2021 12:05

@Bryonyshcmyony

I've just been shopping and took my mask - the staff in Lidl weren't wearing one so I didnt either and it was marvellous. Farm shop still askign for masks and social distancing and hand sanitiser so I of course complied but I did think oh fgs really.
Yeah, imagine the farm shop wanting to keep their staff safe and protect their profits.

OP the word "selfish" is massively overused these days and there's a very beneficial art to not giving a fuck what random strangers think. I think some people think saying "yOUrE sELfiSH" is dropping some sort of bomb but I just find it embarrassing TBH.

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:06

Watching the BBC news seeing hundreds and hundreds of young people out last night enjoying themselves doing what they love, socialising, dancing.

The coming on here to the usual over the top name calling selfish being today's favourite for not wearing a scrap of fabric as if that's the answer to everything Hmm

Lavender24 · 19/07/2021 12:06

@Bettyboopawoop

Do you think your really cool op? You get on with not wearing your mask I will wear mine, don't come crying on here when we have another lockdown.
There'll be another lockdown no matter what we do anyway.

I agree quite pathetic really.

@Frittataz

No, i actually don’t see the benefit of masks, I never have. I’ll wear one in a clinical setting simply because in my area masks are still a requirement unless you’re exempt.
Actually, the evidence for wearing masks is compelling now. Here’s a current systematic review of the available evidence to date and the studies, taken together, point to significant benefits of wearing masks, including cloth masks, at individual and population level. Apart from being selfish, given we’re about to become the largest Petri dish in the world, you’re also being a bit daft and putting yourself at greater risk of catching COVID.

Remember, this dropping of all the rules is NOT supported by scientists or medics. It’s happening the way it’s happening because that sex yeti we have in No.10 is bored of the whole thing now and is so scientifically illiterate he has no idea what he’s doing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/07/2021 12:07

I imagine the mandatory mask wearing will slowly fade away as everyone gets bored with it

Sugarplumfairy65 · 19/07/2021 12:07

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.

a private business is quite entitled to say no entry without a mask. Even if you have a medical exemption, as long as they apply the rule to everyone, they are not falling foul of the equality act.
Don't be a duck! If someone asks you to wear a mask on their premises, wear one

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:08

@Namechangedforthis1357

It's a tiny piece of cloth - not a huge chunk of metal like a wheelchair, crutches, oxygen tank etc.

I'm astounded at the selfishness of some people.

This lifting of lockdown will only continue to keep vulnerable people in lockdown.

Biscuit.... You really need to chill a bit though
UrAWizHarry · 19/07/2021 12:08

It is blatently selfish though.

If you don't have a legitimate reason to not wear a mask, you are making a choice to put your comfort above the health of others.

You cannot argue that is not selfish.

pinatastick · 19/07/2021 12:09

I'll still wear mine in shops, doctors surgery etc. Won't wear it for the school run now I have the choice, as we stay outside and distanced so feels much safer.

I think people forget about others sometimes. Yes you might be in that shop for 5 minutes and only pass a handful of people. The staff (who could be vulnerable) on the other hand will be there all day and come in to contact with hundreds of people.

Ileflottante · 19/07/2021 12:09

I’m keeping mine. Not only is it courteous, I love the anonymity and looking like a fucking ninja 🥷

Proudboomer · 19/07/2021 12:10

I went to my local parade of small shops this morning. Out of the three shops I went in only one still asked for customers to wear mask. The one wanting masks was the bakers so makes sense as a lot of exposed food. The green grocery didn’t ask and out of the two staff one had a mask on. The third shop was a charity shop without a request for masks and the one member of staff was also mask free.
I only wore my mask in the bakery as I have no problem following their rule if I want service but for the rest I will make my own judgement of risk.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/07/2021 12:10

It is possible to wear a mask but not particularly enjoy it or believe that it is doing any good whatsoever

but of course this is mumsnet so everything is black and white

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:10
@LucyLockhearts I was being sarky. How effective are masks when we’ve got a 40k case rate.
Yep.
It's almost as if they don't actually work Grin

Lavender24 · 19/07/2021 12:11

@MotherOfDemons

As a drip feed, I am exempt from wearing a mask so all the fuckers that don't will affect me.

It means that I am the one that makes adjustments to look after my own health and not go into Tesco's and rub up against people, instead opting for deliveries.

I'm genuinely exempt. I attempted to wear one for the first couple of weeks to avoid confrontation but then gave up after a huge panic attack in Sainsbury's and bought myself a lanyard (which I'm not wearing from today).

Knowing how uncomfortable they make me, I have no problems with other declaring themselves exempt also. No one owes me protection.

Whammyyammy · 19/07/2021 12:12

Binned mine last night, I listen to government advice, the same advice that told us to wear them.
Been to Sainsburys, pets at home and Tk max today, not many staff wearing them, 50/50 with customers .

If people want to wear masks, fine.
If people done want to wear masks, fine.

Get off your high horses, its a personal choice now.

Rainbunny · 19/07/2021 12:13

Retailers can require masks if they wish, they're private enterprises and it's their private property so they can dictate they own rules as long as there's no discrimination ("no shirt, no service" for example).

Given the certain explosion in covid cases coming, I'll be wearing a mask in supermarkets and stores. But yes, OP you're free to go maskless excepting public transport and the rules set by private businesses on their premises.

I

ExConstance · 19/07/2021 12:13

I work in a sector where I was double vaccinated quite early on. I have a PCR test and do 2 more LTF tests each week. I have complied with all the rules to the letter and had to work through some quite traumatic times. I think the chances of anyone catching covid from me are virtually zero and I want to stop wearing masks in shops and other places now. I hope that those of us in my situation will be left alone to get on with this as I have a horrible feeling I might feel bullied into complying with virtue signalling expectations that bear no relation to the risk assessment of my circumstances.

bendmeoverbackwards · 19/07/2021 12:14

@Whammyyammy because the government have acted so well throughout 🙄🙄🙄

Canigooutyet · 19/07/2021 12:14

Shame name changes are allowed. Would be interesting to see the history of some saying none mask wearers are selfish, things like calpol and school, stomach bugs and ignoring the 48 hour stay at home policy etc.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 19/07/2021 12:15

@UrAWizHarry because i wear one for 12 hours a day at work NHS. Most staff i know think they are pointless outside of a medical setting with people reusing them constantly and touching them constantly! Pointless exercise.

SycamoreGap · 19/07/2021 12:16

@Frittataz

Not really. There are poorly people in hospital who are genuinely vulnerable so in this instance I don’t mind wearing a mask, and like I said, the letter I got from the hospital states masks are required. Shops will not have signs outside stating masks are required and I assume people who are poorly will not be out shopping.
There are plenty of people outside of clinical settings who are CEV and have to work in public facing roles - poorly people aren't just in hospital. You may be shocked to hear that some of them have to actually work.
SpindleWhorl · 19/07/2021 12:17

@gardeninggirl68

So whilst security guards are checking customers wear masks at *@SpindleWhorl* local Asda......the shoplifters are free to steal the stock

Is that sustainable?

Oh give over
