Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

This is what will happen now, those who work in shops will just occur "they are not legal now". I work in one in Wales(still legal here) but the English will be come in droves without their masks just saying they are except etc.

TheGallopingGourmet · 19/07/2021 06:58

Please can I ask why having Bipolar makes somebody exempt from wearing a mask ?

Brusselsprouts21 · 19/07/2021 06:59

I will wear a mask until it is physically stripped off my face. Cases are going up and i don't trust people's hygiene. Everyone has their own reasons for wearing/not wearing one. Enjoy being free!

joanneligthelm · 19/07/2021 06:59

A lot of business including shops and hairdressers, are asking people to continue wearing them, numbers are really on the up in our town at the moment and the staff who work for us, wish for it to continue, so out of respect and duty of care to them will be continue to ask customers to wear masks in the shop, there may not be a legal responsibility but we are with our rights to refuse entry as long as it is without discrimination

Bagelsandbrie · 19/07/2021 07:01

You won’t be able to go into lots of shops without one as many are still requiring one for entry.

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/07/2021 07:01

You can not wear one now, although I suspect a Johnson U-turn is imminent. But many businesses have said they're required for access to their services, so you'll be a bit limited in where you can shop. And if you argue you'll also have the pleasure of knowing everyone around you thinks you're a knob.

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 19/07/2021 07:01

Not a legal requirement , but shops policy so they will have the right to refuse service should you not comply with their policies

Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 19/07/2021 07:02

I don’t think your feeling of “freedom” is going to turn out like you expect. Unless you enjoy confrontation and feeling uncomfortable you’re in for a pretty unenjoyable shopping experience.

The world is watching aghast at this dreadful experiment Boris has decided to conduct in the uk.

Theunamedcat · 19/07/2021 07:03

@Frittataz

I wouldn’t be at all unpleasant I’d simply remind them that face masks are no longer legally enforceable. Or would it be better if I lied and told them I’m exempt? As either way from today I won’t be wearing masks except for in clinical settings.
Again their shop their rules your entitled behaviour won't change this
Frittataz · 19/07/2021 07:04

I’m not a knob and I don’t care if strangers think that. I’ve done everything I’ve needed to do from the very start to protect my family and complete strangers so I’d like to have. A it of choice for once.

What's the point of this thread, OP?

YABVU in my opinion, and selfish too, but it sounds like you don't really care about how anyone else might feel, so why did you bother asking the question in the first place?

Nobody can force you to wear a mask. You are legally entitled to behave in a selfish manner if you so choose. You already know that, so why not just crack on?

NigellasGuest · 19/07/2021 07:05

I've been in a few shops where the assistants have said they can't wait to be able to work without masks

ilovesooty · 19/07/2021 07:05

I do feel sorry for the genuinely exempt who really do struggle with masks. They're going to feel even worse from today onwards.

TeenMinusTests · 19/07/2021 07:05

Perhaps just be considerate and if shops want you to wear a mask and you don't, then just don't go in the shop?

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 07:05

If thousands of people can attend indoor nightclubs and indoor sporting events then I don’t see people should be expected to wear a mask to go shopping.

No it wouldn’t be better if you lied and said you’re exempt. If you’re going to behave like an arse own your behaviour and any potential consequences. I’m sure you will be “polite” when reminding the minimum wage staff it’s not legal…..but do you think that they enjoy even that level of confrontation? Which potentially will be repeatedly happening?

Some of these shop workers could be young, 16yo, etc? Unvaccinated and feeling really vulnerable. Do you think it’s fair to put them in this position?

TeddingtonTrashbag · 19/07/2021 07:06

Going to an expensive hairdressing appointment later that requires being in the salon 3 hours. If they require a mask I will cancel. Their loss.

Theunamedcat · 19/07/2021 07:06

Because you don't buy a ticket to shop in sainsbury's

ThreeB · 19/07/2021 07:07

Every one of the people who went clubbing last night chose to go there and weighed up the risks. Retail workers don't get that choice. They rely on you to protect them.

The removal of the rules are really going to show how many selfish people we have in this country.

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 07:07

I get what you’re saying but to call me selfish for wanting to do something I’m legally allowed to do is bit harsh.

Shelovesamystery · 19/07/2021 07:07

I don't get where everyone is getting this idea that loads of shops will make customers wear masks from Confused
Because some companies have issued statements saying they "encourage" mask wearing in their stores? Nobody is going to enforce it or ask you to wear a mask, whatever statement their company has issued. You might get the odd jobsworth asking customers to wear masks but most people who work in customer service are fed up of getting grief for asking customers to stick to the law, why would they open themselves up to more grief by asking customers to do something that is perfectly legal? I work in customer service, not a chance I'll be asking anyone to wear a mask FFS.

rattlemehearties · 19/07/2021 07:08

It's unkind behaviour of you given that many retail and hospitality staff are young and therefore haven't received both doses of the vaccine. Wearing a mask protects others more than you.

ilovesooty · 19/07/2021 07:09

I suspect the OP enjoys confrontation actually and can't wait to start her 'gentle reminders'.
Frittataz · 19/07/2021 07:09

If I was selfish then I wouldn’t have stuck to the rules at all from the start would I. I have wore masks, kept my distance, not seen my family for months etc. If I really didn’t give a shit about other people why would have I done that?
