Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

I can't believe it hat a hard time you're getting on here OP

I've already done my weekly shop without my mask this morning. No one said anything but if they did I'd very simply say "I am not required to wear one and I owe you no explanation" then walk away.

I won't be scared or guilted into doing something when I've spent 16 months complying to my own personally detriment, and I'll avoid places that are still enforcing masks rules.

JudgeJ · 19/07/2021 11:23

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.
Then they may gently remind you that there are other shops! Their shop, their rules, to paraphrase a MN phrase re houses!
gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 11:24

So whilst security guards are checking customers wear masks at @SpindleWhorl local Asda......the shoplifters are free to steal the stock

Is that sustainable?

DareIask · 19/07/2021 11:24

There are lot of things socially unacceptable and not enforceable by law. Doesn't make them right to do, nor does is it make people do them, just because they can.

Masks are no different imo. Asking people to have some responsibility is surely better than endless rules and laws.

WeatherForecast · 19/07/2021 11:26

@ILoveYouILoveYouIDo

I was just out shopping and a safety Marshall for that store, stopped a girl who wasn't wearing a mask. Explaining to her the dangers etc which I thought was wrong.
Really? That's terrible. Kids haven't been expected to wear them from the beginning full stop!
Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 19/07/2021 11:26

I find it incredibly telling that most of the people here who are anti mask don’t seem to realise what way the protection goes.

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 11:27

@StrawberryMargarita

I popped into a supermarket early this morning, there were quite a few people there already and most were wearing masks, two men weren't and one of the supermarket staff were arguing with them about it, telling them they should still be wearing one
Are the staff paid and equipped to deal with conflict? What if they turned nasty....physical?

What's the police stance on this? Will they be on standby for this kind of thing? What about the mental health of staff?

Someone said upthread that this may have been posted by a journalist. If so, congratulations, you now have 23 pages of copy mostly explaining why the vast majority of people on Mumsnet will still be wearing masks, and the reasons why. What a pity you didn't enable voting.

OhDear2200 · 19/07/2021 11:27

Nice

This is why you can’t compare Britain to countries like Japan where there is a general respect for community responsibility. Whereas here it’s fuck it I’ll do what I want.

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 11:28

Oh, was this a journo then?

tgt123 · 19/07/2021 11:28

In my big Tesco this morning, there was no one on the door checking and I'd say about two thirds of customers were wearing masks. And about the same proportion of staff (for whatever reason). Although the majority of the shoppers were elderly and I suspect had come early as it's a bit quieter. Ultimately it's an individual decision and people shouldn't be judged whether they choose to wear a mask or not.

OhDear2200 · 19/07/2021 11:28

Oh and fuck off it you’re a journalist

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 11:28

Every one of the people who went clubbing last night chose to go there and weighed up the risks. Retail workers don't get that choice.

Have I missed something - are there no staff working in nightclubs or are customers pouring their own drinks?

Mumtotwofurbabies · 19/07/2021 11:29

I think I will take a pragmatic approach to mask wearing. For example, in a very very busy supermarket, yes will wear one. For late night shopping if it’s almost empty or very few people, maybe not. I was in a restaurant the other day, where there was only one other set of diners, had to faff around to get my mask out to put it on to walk the few metres to my table, then take it off again. Now I won’t be wearing the mask in that situation (which happens a lot!). I probably would wear it if I did use public transport, which I don’t a lot, but again, depends how many other people on the bus or train…

knittingaddict · 19/07/2021 11:30

Was that sarcasm WeatherForecast? Picking that person up on the "girl" thing? It's very hard to tell sometimes.

I think it's clear to all of us already that you don't care. Kinda the point of the thread...you don't care about anyone but yourself, like the OP.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 19/07/2021 11:35

Nope i wont be wearing one anywhere other than a medical setting either. Any shop etc that tries to force them on me will not be getting my money!

Bogofftosomewherehot · 19/07/2021 11:35

@Frittataz

I wouldn’t be at all unpleasant I’d simply remind them that face masks are no longer legally enforceable. Or would it be better if I lied and told them I’m exempt? As either way from today I won’t be wearing masks except for in clinical settings.
Businesses also have the right to set the rules for their own setting.

As for for lying and saying your exempt - Selfish - it's people like you that are going to make it 100x worse for those of us that truly are exempt and then people won't believe us. (I still wear mine despite being exempt.)

Chippingbird23 · 19/07/2021 11:37

@Coldilox

Plenty of shops, public transport etc will still require them.
Great! Well plenty of business will not require them and want money so any business turning me away for not wearing a snot rag that serves no purpose other than fear and control will not get my money. 😊
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/07/2021 11:37

@claralara42 see, I think that's a weird take, especially considering it's based on ONE post by someone who doesn't know me. I do plenty of selfless things, but one perceived action makes me wholly and undeniably selfish Confused

Then again I really am not part of this toxic modern trend of calling people meanies online, so you carry on being over dramatic about people who's name you don't even know, and I'll carry on laughing at people like you for it

MurielSpriggs · 19/07/2021 11:38

I'm guessing that once a critical mass of people are not wearing masks (and that might be the case already, haven't left the house yet!) then any attempt at non-legal pressure to wear them, by shop staff for example, will be abandoned. If half the customers in Tesco are not wearing masks it will take several members of staff to go round trying to persuade them. And in my Tesco they won't even pay to put staff on the till!

It's a tiny piece of cloth - not a huge chunk of metal like a wheelchair, crutches, oxygen tank etc.

I'm astounded at the selfishness of some people.

This lifting of lockdown will only continue to keep vulnerable people in lockdown.
