Reporting someone for failing to isolate

WouldYouShouldI · 17/07/2021 00:44

Under what circumstances would you report someone for failing to isolate? Would you report any breach, no breach, or would it depend on circumstances?

I've been told by a friend that a family member of theirs (should be isolating because someone they live with has tested positive) is not isolating, and is even going out to work- and they work with vulnerable people in a medical environment!

Should I report them regardless of the possible consequences on my friend (who will be blamed if they get caught)? Or encourage my friend to do the same, again despite the consequences?

I'm torn!

Report to who??

Crazycakelady17 · 17/07/2021 00:46

No do not do it too rules are changing in regards to isolating very soon don’t be that person
Is the person who should be isolating a dick yes but don’t report what would you achieve?

WouldYouShouldI · 17/07/2021 00:52

What would it achieve? Protecting the vulnerable people the person works with!

I don't actually know the process of reporting, I haven't looked into it, I'm just trying to work out what's right.

Never.

I'd never do it.

You don't know what's going on in people's lives and we've all complied for a year and a half.

I remember learning at school that the Nazi party started not with top politicians or people of great influence, but nosy neighbours and street lamp lighters and post men eager to snitch on those in their community to perceived slights, and whilst it's obviously not a comparison, snitching on a non-isolator just sails too close to the wind for me

Maria53 · 17/07/2021 00:56

Are we living in Nazi Germany?

Absolutely not!

HeavenHotel · 17/07/2021 00:56

Report to who???

BeQuietBrenda · 17/07/2021 01:00

I wouldn't report. I'd mind my own business. I would judge them for being selfish and careless though.

Lou98 · 17/07/2021 01:02

Under what circumstances would you report someone for failing to isolate

I wouldn't!

You've also not even heard this first hand, you've heard it from a friend about someone else - Chinese whispers springs to mind. You have no idea of the actual circumstances, just what your friend has shared

FelicityBeedle · 17/07/2021 01:04

I wouldn’t report for an app ping, or a bubble bursting. But somebody living with a positive case and still going to work (especially in a medical environment) I absolutely would. To their employer at the very least

Ylvamoon · 17/07/2021 01:06

So they are going to work?
Possibly because they will not get paid for isolating?

Let it go.

Anordinarymum · 17/07/2021 01:11

What is this 'dobbing in people' attitude? Dreadful. Mind your own business really.

One of my neighbours reported us and another neighbour at different times for flouting Covid rules and the police came round and spoke to us.
We know he did it. They told us.
He just couldn't help himself and he was wrong and he wasted police time, and lost any respect I had for him.

Guavaf1sh · 17/07/2021 01:12

This sort of post is a warning to us all how quickly we can fall into fascism

maggiemuff · 17/07/2021 01:13

Just mind your own business. This is what we have become now!! Reporting people for breaking "the rules"!! Wise yourself up and get on with your own life.

WeGoHigh · 17/07/2021 01:13

It baffles me that people could defend this with the circumstances the OP has set out. If your vulnerable family member was being cared for by someone living with someone who’d tested positive would you be so blasé? I know everyone is exhausted at this stage but come on

MrsKoala · 17/07/2021 01:15

Jesus Christ. Is this what we’ve become?

He could be part of a trial of 15,000 people who are currently undergoing daily testing to avoid the need for 10 days isolation having been in contact with a person who has tested positive.

Has there been a campaign to encourage us all to police each other?

avamiah · 17/07/2021 01:20

@Anordinarymum,
Yes totally agree with you 100 percent.

I thought the Government employed people to do this job so leave it to them.
Life is bad enough without your neighbours spying on you.

Rollmopsrule · 17/07/2021 01:22

If the people they are working with are vulnerable she will be vaccinated and so will they.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 17/07/2021 01:29

I get the distinct feeling that some people have been waiting their whole lives to be dobbers, and they have finally got a chance to do it whilst also appearing virtuous. I've said it time and again - COVID had really been the busybodies time to shine

I honestly would not worry. Anymore than I did for the past few decades when flu has been rife in winter.

I would consider that many people don't get paid for isolating and people have already taken a huge financial hit though

Topseyt · 17/07/2021 01:34

Of course you don't! You're only going on hearsay anyway and very likely don't have all of the information.

Don't be such an arse! Nobody appreciates a busybody from the self-appointed Covid Police.

WouldYouShouldI · 17/07/2021 01:35

Ok, message received!

I'm a bit surprised that people aren't more concerned for others welfare. For the record, both the person breaking isolation and the person who tested positive are definitely double vaccinated- that clearly didn't stop them catching it, so doesn't mean it would help the people they work with either.

I expected the results of this to go the other way- my gut is not to report, but that left me feeling awful for the people it puts at risk.

OP posts:
WeHaveComeSoFar · 17/07/2021 01:35

Not a chance I would

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 17/07/2021 01:36

@WouldYouShouldI you want to risk someone's actual job over a bit of unfounded hearsay? Where's your concern about that person?!
