Are "barely there" dresses acceptable in high profile public?

Are "barely there" dresses acceptable? I saw this this in the Mail this morning, and there were the usual comments: "and they wonder why men sexualize them..." etc.
I wondered if there were any views? www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9792613/Cannes-Film-Festival-2021-Kimberley-Garner-flashes-bottom-Georgina-Rodriguez.html#comments

Hate the Mail.
No idea who the woman in purple is, she has an amazing body.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 16/07/2021 07:53

What are your views?

At least 99% of all comments on that rag are different to mine.

ohthatbloodycat · 16/07/2021 07:54

The burgundy leather and lilac dresses are bloody awful anyway.
I agree that a bit of decorum should be shown at these events.

Snoozysnoozy · 16/07/2021 07:58

If you've got it flaunt it.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2021 07:58

It may be ill-advised if any of these women wish to be taken seriously, but worse is the bloody misogynistic comments - a few women do this and they use it as an excuse for wolf whistling and inequality. Hmm

Katshouldnotswim · 16/07/2021 08:00

I really don’t like that dress, colours materials and general look of it. Looks 2 bob.

Aprilx · 16/07/2021 08:01

I wish the woman in the purple dress would at least stop holding it open, she is pulling it back to reveal herself in virtually every shot. It would look better if she just let it hang naturally.

DustyOwl · 16/07/2021 08:04

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, really. I was expecting much worse. I've seen much worse on the read carpet (although I don't actually like any of the dresses.)

Onlinedilema · 16/07/2021 08:05

Why do they wear dresses that are too long? I'm not really keen on any of them to be honest. My favourite was the gold trouser outfit and the white dress which wasn't too long, finished above the floor.

doesparentingsuck · 16/07/2021 08:06

I kind of agree. I am mid thirties and have a decent body but at this age don't know why you need to flash all of that? It screams 'look at me I'm so insecure I need attention'

But I also respect that they can make the choice to wear what they want

newnortherner111 · 16/07/2021 08:08

There is a difference between a choice and an expectation. I think there is too much of an expectation for 'red carpet' events. I have been to several film premieres or events where the actresses do a Q+A afterwards and those who have turned up not in some skimpy dress makes a welcome change.

DrSbaitso · 16/07/2021 08:09

This is nothing new. Liz Hurley's safety pin dress? Jennifer Lopez's green one? And a jillion starlets I can't remember appearing in see through lace and waist high slashes and all.

Women can wear what they like.

MaxNormal · 16/07/2021 08:09

It's a red carpet event, of course they're going to wear dresses that give them the maximum possible press coverage. It's not like they're wearing them to go to the office to Tesco.

You don't get to criticise, moralise, make it clear you COULD look that good if you wanted to, and then claim you're not being judgemental.
FastFood · 16/07/2021 08:11

The first dress is awful, and the way she makes sure it stays open is definitely not the vibe one can expect at Cannes which is a bit classier than that.

Comments are awful though, but not surprised at all.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/07/2021 08:11

Certainly a statement dress-and the statement she wanted to make given that she appeared to spend all of her time ensuring that the dress was pushed back to flash her admittedly fantastic legs and bum. Not my cup of tea and I’m usually of the flaunt tits or arse not both school of thought but hey, she looks great.

CallMeRisley · 16/07/2021 08:11

No such thing as bad publicity. I hadn’t heard of Kimberley Garner before… now I have. Just like PP mentioned Elizabeth Hurley, pretty unknown dating Hugh Grant and turning up in the safety pin dress.

Farwest · 16/07/2021 08:15

It's a red carpet - a publicity stunt. They are there to generate PR and press coverage for themselves and their projects.

doesparentingsuck · 16/07/2021 08:16

@DrSbaitso in quite happy to confirm I AM being judgemental. When people wear such outfits they have no right to police other peoples judgement - yes I'm being judgemental.

But I can do that and still have respect for their choices, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

My point about having a decent body is that I feel sometimes people wouldn't wear something because they perhaps have body hang ups so my point is simply saying I don't have that but still wouldn't wear such a dress, that's all my point is.

Well, pity them for being no prettier than you and yet inherently inferior for other reasons. Your superiority should keep you satisfied.

Soontobe60 · 16/07/2021 08:21

Some nice dresses, some not so nice. I do wonder how much the Film industry still places expectations on women as objects, rather than as actors, influences the way these women present themselves. It’s all about chasing the dollar!

LakieLady · 16/07/2021 08:21

I'm convinced that they wear ever more revealing dresses in the hope of getting more pics of themselves in the press, thus raising their own profiles and those of the films they're promoting.

One of these days, one of them will turn up wearing nothing but stripper pasties and a g-string, with maybe a few strands of chiffon or something in the hope of fooling people that it's actually a dress.

It's their choice, if they want to do it I don't really care. But then I'm not fussed about nudity anyway.

tintodeverano2 · 16/07/2021 08:22

I don't know who any of them are. But by flashing your bum and wearing a ridiculous dress gets you in the papers, so of course a wannabe will do it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/07/2021 08:22

The first one resembles crepe paper, which was used when I was in my youth. All i see when I look at is a gone wrong project from the 1970’s. It is hideous.

The black one is a bit odd with cycling shorts. I hate the contrived flaunt my legs and / back / bust / bum. It’s a meat market and attracts a certain type of person eg Harvey Weinstein.

Obviously women can wear what they want. But it’s sad they have to show all rather than be seen for their own merit.

ConstanceGracy · 16/07/2021 08:22

I was more perplexed by the fact that Kimberly garner is there.. why? Why is she still even considered famous? She was in a couple of episodes of Made in Chelsea years ago and that’s it.
