Are "barely there" dresses acceptable in high profile public?

Are "barely there" dresses acceptable? I saw this this in the Mail this morning, and there were the usual comments: "and they wonder why men sexualize them..." etc.
I wondered if there were any views? www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9792613/Cannes-Film-Festival-2021-Kimberley-Garner-flashes-bottom-Georgina-Rodriguez.html#comments

I'm not really bothered about how much they are showing off it's the length of them that gives me anxiety!
I would definitely stand on it and fall on my face with my bum sticking in the air for everyone to see ShockGrin

TableFlowerss · 16/07/2021 10:47

@smokeball

We wear bikinis in the beach, actors and actresses bare all in films, what is the problem with cut out dresses?

I don't particularly like the colour of the dresses and I don't think the cut of them were amazingly flattering either, but the dresses were nowhere near indecent.

I think the difference with the bikini at the beach comparison, is that it’s extremely hot. No one would go to the beach in a silly jumper and jeans if it was hot enough for others to wear bikinis. It’s for practical reasons and as an aside yes people will probably look, but that isn’t the main purpose of wearing a bikini/swim costume at the beach. It’s purely practical. It’s the context.

Wearing a very exposing clothing item (this is in general) on a night out etc.. isn’t a must. You can chose to cover up head to toe or you can chose to show every inch. That’s a women’s choice and that’s fair enough, but the two situations aren’t comparable…..

jinglebal · 16/07/2021 10:48

I believe in choice but why do we not get young men doing the same?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 16/07/2021 10:48

The French say 'Il faut souffrir pour etre belle'.

But the very thought of a dress that rides up, rides down, exposes one bit, has to be yanked into position only to expose another bit, is in fact like a fitted sheet that's too small to cover all the corners of a mattress at once - and then has to be held down constantly in case of a passing breeze just enervates me completely.

Clearly I'm getting old.

jinglebal · 16/07/2021 10:49

There is definitely an expectation & it's an easy win publicity wise.

bookworm20 · 16/07/2021 10:49

She just looks a bit desperate really. Each to their own, but it isn't exactly screaming class and sophistication.
No idea why she felt the need to show off her bum

ahoyshipmates · 16/07/2021 10:49

Some people are just attention-seekers aren't they?

Don't much care either way, they can wear whatever they like if it makes them happy.

TableFlowerss · 16/07/2021 10:52

Indeed. That purple job would look cheap and nasty however much flesh it covered. Whatever happened to elegance and sophistication

@Blossomtoes

Exactly!

jinglebal · 16/07/2021 10:55

But these dresses are tame compared to some Ive seen.

Tbf Cannes wouldn't be Cannes without a Z-lister flashing some skin

Lovemusic33 · 16/07/2021 10:57

If I had a ass like that I would happily wear that dress 🤣, I don’t see the issue, everything that needs to be covered is covered.

TableFlowerss · 16/07/2021 10:58

Jesus wept!

For those saying “They don’t do it for attention…”

Yeah, course they don’t!! 🥱😝

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 16/07/2021 10:58

I’m not being bitchy. There are plenty of actress and singers who don’t need to flash flesh to get in that papers..,,, you can absolutely be beautiful and smart. I know I am 😜 and I don’t need to get my tits out to get attention.

comebacksunshines · 16/07/2021 10:59

But also starting threads slagging off those at the very bottom of this particular food chain is pointlessly blaming the people with the least power.
No one is forcing this career on them, hardly a choice between flashing your arse on the red carpet, or the work house is it ?

SoMuchForSummerLove · 16/07/2021 11:00

@CounsellorTroi

I am always pretty happy to see Ronaldo take his shirt off at the drop of a hat.

Pretty sure he wouldn’t do that at a formal event.

Probably not but I'd be there for it Grin

Because patriarchy...

Both those dresses are tacky as hell.
WildSwimming101 · 16/07/2021 11:03

If you wear revealing clothing, people will look. There's not much more to it then that.

Some people have very attractive body's. Even as a straight women I can admire and find another women's body nice to look at.

If people want to wear revealing clothes that's fine. But don't expect people to not look.

Harsh comments aren't needed.

Just appreciate an attractive body with out Turing to hate speech.

That's not what I said at all though.

What I said was, if you want things to change in any particular industry, start by questioning those at the top, not slagging off those at the bottom who have close to zero power.

SnottyLottie · 16/07/2021 11:08

I don’t think any of the dresses are that bad or even ‘barely there’. But some of them are purposely flashing their thighs by sticking their legs out of the side slits and one of them is actually flashing her bottom for some inexplicable reason. Even then, it’s nothing worse than what is shown when wearing swimwear so we shouldn’t be that shocked.

TheCrowening · 16/07/2021 11:12

They’re window dressing. Only one of those photographs was of someone actually in the movie.

EspressoDoubleShot · 16/07/2021 11:13

This thread is certainly tutty with why have it all the all on show type comments
These are women wanting to dress for effect, to be noticed, get papped
They’ve purposefully chosen a striking dress. Get in paper = job done
So,the dress isn’t to your taste or sensibilities. Not what some of you would wear to an event? Clearly it is a active choice these women made, they have been preened, blow dryer and made up for the event

DrSbaitso · 16/07/2021 11:13

Of course they want to be looked at.

But that's not a crime either, especially in showbiz.

Dustdustdusty · 16/07/2021 11:29

unless you agree with the poster saying that showing flesh attracts people who will sexually assault you? Is that what you think?

I think this because it’s true. It will attract vermin like Weinstein. But what the above comment does is presume that the pp is inferring women shouldn’t dress like that so as not to attract predators. No one is inferring that. Men shouldn’t sexually assault women. Women should dress how they want.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 16/07/2021 11:31

I don't think visible flesh is what attracts people like Weinstein. He's attracted to people he can dominate and subjugate. He'd fuck a woman wearing a bin bag full of vomit if it meant he felt that he had power over her.

Well this is what you said.

No mention of challenging those at the top in your post. Still stands what I said. They are choosing to capitalise on their bodies, some to make money, others to get into a profession. Their choice, but its not a choice between that and desperation.

Why isn't your focus on the females that choose not conform to this expectation, instead you choose to defend those that are happy to perpetuate the cycle.
