Are "barely there" dresses acceptable in high profile public?

Are "barely there" dresses acceptable? I saw this this in the Mail this morning, and there were the usual comments: "and they wonder why men sexualize them..." etc.
I wondered if there were any views? www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9792613/Cannes-Film-Festival-2021-Kimberley-Garner-flashes-bottom-Georgina-Rodriguez.html#comments

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

It's a shame Andie McDowell isn't on, she's had her hair go grey and looked stunning in the opening red carpet.

As for Kimberly, meh, nothing original there, ghastly dress. Good looking woman though.

Andie’s dress was so lovely and flattering! No flesh on show though, so didn’t make the DM article!
CarnationCat · 16/07/2021 09:31

The dress is nice and absolutely fine. I wouldn't call it barely there....until Kimberley flashed her bum.

The bum flashing isn't appropriate but the dress is.

ladyvimes · 16/07/2021 09:32

I think she looks great. Why do we constantly police what women wear? Are we offended by her amazing arse? Wish I looked like that!!

Grellbunt · 16/07/2021 09:33

@DrSbaitso

This is nothing new. Liz Hurley's safety pin dress? Jennifer Lopez's green one? And a jillion starlets I can't remember appearing in see through lace and waist high slashes and all.

Women can wear what they like.

But why do only women feel the need?

Where are the men baring all?

Screams power imbalance to me.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/07/2021 09:34

All the leg flashing makes them the object of ridicule - remember Angelina Jolie and the sticky out leg pose? It's easy to tip from looking attractive to looking a bit silly when you wear clothes whose sole purpose is to show your makes body. If a person wants to be taken seriously, they can't make their body the only thing which is memorable about them

Drinkingallthewine · 16/07/2021 09:36

I'm all for women wearing what they damn well like, so I'm fine with her dress.

But she reminds me of a toddler the way she's pulling it up.

To me, the perfect dress shouldn't need an awkward pose or to be held up/tugged around to show the detail or design you want it to show (like angelina's side split dress) on the red carpet. So if this dress was designed to show off her arse, it's a poor design that required her to lift it up in such a toddlerish way. There are many far more revealing and creative dresses that worked really well and looked great (Cher, Moonlight Oscar, Liz Hurley's safety pin dress, JLo's green slashed dress) because of the design ensuring that the wearer just...wore it, rather than fiddling awkwardly with it.

Grellbunt · 16/07/2021 09:37

@Mousetown

The black one is a bit odd with cycling shorts. I hate the contrived flaunt my legs and / back / bust / bum. It’s a meat market and attracts a certain type of person eg Harvey Weinstein

I can’t believe it’s 2021 and women still make comments like this.

I can't believe it is 2021 and people don't see how sexist the system is that pits women against each other to show off most flesh, when men are not under equivalent pressure.
Blossomtoes · 16/07/2021 09:38

I completely agree. We all make judgements about the way people choose to look, whether we admit it or not. Dress like a hooker and that’s the way a lot of people will see you. It’s not accidental that in professions where women need to be taken seriously the dress code means no skin is revealed.

AuldAlliance · 16/07/2021 09:38

Bella Hadid (whoever she is...I have no idea) was certainly ensuring her upper half didn't get overheated.

I wouldn't choose to wear a dress that deliberately reveals my breasts, but then I'm not a film star, so what would I know?

TBH, I'm less Hmm about that than her decision to sling a pair of gold lungs round her neck during a pandemic in which millions have died, many of pulmonary failure.

Sillysuzie · 16/07/2021 09:39

@Badgercity

My only opinion is that those dresses won’t age well. They remind me of late 90s early 2000s Paris Hilton type fashion.

The women are beautiful and have incredible bodies, but these dresses have fashion fad written all over them.

Exactly what I thought, Paris Hilton.
ahoyshipmates · 16/07/2021 09:40

Still waiting with bated breath for the OP's own views...

FlyingBattie · 16/07/2021 09:40

I don't like them and wouldn't wear them.
I would never dream of assuming to tell someone else that what they wear is not acceptable for any circumstance.
They are not quite into indecent territory.

Well, remember though that Georgina Rodirguez is a model; she's there to generate interest and get work. If she didn't wear clothes that showed off her work tools (i.e. her body) she'd be wasting her time being there.
MistyGreenAndBlue · 16/07/2021 09:49

Well. Its "empowering" innit?

Funny how empowering always seems to mean pandering to the Male Gaze though.

Odd how that works out.
Hmmm

This. They can wear what they want but man, some of those dresses are so ugly. I think the one Stella is wearing looks classy though.
Porcupineintherough · 16/07/2021 09:51

Very empowering. So strange that it's only women who need to dress like this to get coverage though. Suspicious.

viques · 16/07/2021 09:52

Fine for Cannes red carpet. Not fine for Wetherspoons.

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 16/07/2021 09:53

I think the whole point of these dresses is to garner attention at these kinds of events -,they are trying to get their pictures in the papers and evidently they lack enough talent to do so without getting their arse out, in the words of Adele “ I’m doing alright thanks - I don’t need to get my tits out”.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 16/07/2021 09:54

I'm still waiting to find out what's 'barely there' about full-length dresses with a split in the skirt Confused

SweetPetrichor · 16/07/2021 09:54

She doesn’t even have a nice bum worth flashing. Honestly, I think the barely there dresses make women look insecure. If you are relying on your arse - which isn’t even that good an arse - then it seems like you’re lacking confidence.

StrawberryMargarita · 16/07/2021 09:54

In regards to the comment you highlighted, I don't think men sexualise women because they dress like this. I think women dress like this because men sexualise them.

I think that women can wear whatever they like, I just wish they didn't feel the need to dress in outfits like this. Yes she has an amazing body, but the men don't dress so revealing, I hate that the standard is so different for women. You can also look amazing in a more modest gown (gosh that makes me sound so old)

CounsellorTroi · 16/07/2021 09:55

Pippa Middleton’s Bridesmaid dress showed off her arse without her having to reveal anything at all!

I don’t think any of those dresses are indecent tbh. The off shoulder ones don’t reveal any boob. The plunging nude one is gorgeous.

That's just bitchy shite.

Pretty girls can't be smart, what a brilliantly new and not at all misogynistic old trope.

Yay for you.

onlyhereforthecake · 16/07/2021 09:59

Of course it's just for publicity, and it works...

And Adele has never been the subject of more articles than about her weight loss. Papers publish what sell, or what people click.

If no one gave attention to "barely there dress", the celebs would wear something else...

But frankly, with a body like this for most these women, they might as well make the most of it. Would be a shame to hide them, even if I personally would prefer slightly different gown, but I am not the one wearing them.

Grimacingfrog · 16/07/2021 09:59

@Grellbunt. Fair point, but I hope you believe both statements are true and not that yours trumps the other one.
