Are "barely there" dresses acceptable in high profile public?

Are "barely there" dresses acceptable? I saw this this in the Mail this morning, and there were the usual comments: "and they wonder why men sexualize them..." etc.
I wondered if there were any views? www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9792613/Cannes-Film-Festival-2021-Kimberley-Garner-flashes-bottom-Georgina-Rodriguez.html#comments

When it's hot in the UK thousands of men parade around topless and in shorts. Their "outfits" are more "barely there" than these dresses.

Grimacingfrog · 16/07/2021 09:09

@Mummyoflittledragon

The first one resembles crepe paper, which was used when I was in my youth. All i see when I look at is a gone wrong project from the 1970’s. It is hideous.

The black one is a bit odd with cycling shorts. I hate the contrived flaunt my legs and / back / bust / bum. It’s a meat market and attracts a certain type of person eg Harvey Weinstein.

Obviously women can wear what they want. But it’s sad they have to show all rather than be seen for their own merit.

I usually agree with almost everything you say but this is unacceptable. No one is responsible for Harvey Weinstein but Harvey Weinstein.

Whatever you're wearing doesn't give ANY MAN the right to assault you. We have to stop with this 'she was asking for it' trope. It's the thin end of the wedge for rape apologists.

Luminousnose · 16/07/2021 09:09

My main concern is how she’s going to manage the event without stabbing her heel into the chiffon and going TOA, or someone else is going to step on it and rip it. And as someone upthread said, the top looks like crepe paper and is not at all flattering..

Women showing off their bodies at red carpet events is nothing new - Cher, Liz Hurley, etc - I just think that particular dress is really ugly.

I can’t believe it’s 2021 and women still make comments like this.

MagicSummer · 16/07/2021 09:14

Awful dress. Why would anyone want to flash their backside to all and sundry? Very attention-seeking.

LookItsMeAgain · 16/07/2021 09:16

Firstly who are these people??? I don't recognise ONE name (apart from Christian Ronaldo and it wasn't even him in the photo, it was his girlfriend)

Secondly - Angelina Jolie has a lot to answer for with that 'leg pose' she did at the Oscars that everyone seems to do now.

Be original, women!

Also, sometimes actually lots of times less is more.
Less showing of leg, less showing of bum, less showing of boob, less showing of skin...you get my idea. Just because you have it doesn't mean that you have to flaunt it. You can be secure in your skin, in your body and know who you are as a woman and not have to be the most scantily dressed person at the ball.

Youdiditanyway · 16/07/2021 09:18

I mean, it’s a ghastly dress but no issue with a woman showing their bodies off because it’s just a body, we all have one and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. No idea who any of the women in that article are though.

MagicSummer · 16/07/2021 09:18

I love Stella's dress (although no idea who she is), but she has nothing to keep the top of it up!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/07/2021 09:18

That sort of dress sounds decidedly ‘Z-list desperate for publicity’.

Or, as my DM would have said, ‘How dreadfully vulgar.’ 😂

Of course people can wear what the hell they like, but….

TableFlowerss · 16/07/2021 09:20

Woman can wear what they like. They have done for centuries as fashions change etc, mini skirts, boob tubes, the nee trend of bikinis that you can see your boobs underneath.

I’ve got no issue with it and I agree if you’ve got it flaunt it.

However, don’t try and tell me that they don’t like attention and to be looked at, whether it be from men or women.

TableFlowerss · 16/07/2021 09:20

You don’t wear revealing things like that if you don’t want people to look….

SoMuchForSummerLove · 16/07/2021 09:21

So you are surmising that these women are showing flesh because they're insecure, and that a confident woman wouldn't feel the need?

Have you seen them? Grin

I think they're wearing dresses which are entirely in keeping with the event. Whether it's great that these events are places where women are on display is another debate.

ExConstance · 16/07/2021 09:23

They are beautiful women wearing lovely dresses and showing them off to full advantage. Itis a very special occasion and says nothing at all about their politics, brainpower or state of mind at all. I wish i'd had the opportunity to attend a red carpet event in my younger days.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/07/2021 09:23

It's a shame Andie McDowell isn't on, she's had her hair go grey and looked stunning in the opening red carpet.

As for Kimberly, meh, nothing original there, ghastly dress. Good looking woman though.

And you can be secure in your skin, in your body etc etc etc and enjoy wearing OTT scanty stuff. It's not a moral issue.

You lot would hate me. I look nothing like those women but I've been photographed and painted in lingerie and nude, and some of the images even got sold. Most probably to a haunted house or tack room, but still.

Blossomtoes · 16/07/2021 09:25

Indeed. That purple job would look cheap and nasty however much flesh it covered. Whatever happened to elegance and sophistication?
Kanaloa · 16/07/2021 09:25

As long as they like them and are happy then who actually cares? Most days I barely care what I’m wearing much less worrying about other people I don’t even know.

HangingOver · 16/07/2021 09:25

Oooh that purple dress is divine

Kanaloa · 16/07/2021 09:26

Also, women are sexualised by a certain type of man no matter what they wear. We could all dress like that Amish and Harvey Weinstein types would very much still exist.

Emmelina · 16/07/2021 09:27

It got them each several shots in the press. Most are terribly badly fitted. Why hold the purple dress? If it’s too long get it adjusted! And the peachy dress needs to size down at least one and shorten the straps, because that’s barely hanging on.

Davros · 16/07/2021 09:29

It's a film festival! I was expecting a Buckingham Palace garden party or something. I don't see why they can't wear those dresses except I think they're particularly ugly dresses

SarahBellam · 16/07/2021 09:30

They can wear whatever the fuck they want. They're wearing a lot more than they'd be wearing at the beach. The DM readers can get back under their rocks until they learn what consent means.

grapewine · 16/07/2021 09:30

I thought you had to be famous to be at the Cannes Festival. Apparently not. I have no idea who she is. But she can wear what she wants. Cannes is always over the top.

Sorry do you also think women wearing low cut tops and short skirts deserve it if they get sexually assaulted? No one but the person who committed the act is responsible. Women can dress how they want, whether or not someone looks irrelevant, but them acting on it, most certainly is not the victims fault. It's 2021 and there are still dickheads who clearly think a woman is responsible for a mans behaviour due to her clothing.
