Are "barely there" dresses acceptable in high profile public?

Are "barely there" dresses acceptable? I saw this this in the Mail this morning, and there were the usual comments: "and they wonder why men sexualize them..." etc.
I wondered if there were any views? www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9792613/Cannes-Film-Festival-2021-Kimberley-Garner-flashes-bottom-Georgina-Rodriguez.html#comments

My favourite comment was the ‘Humph! Either you want to be treated as professionals and not a sexual object OR you want to flash your body to men to make money. You can’t have it both ways! I give up!’

I love the fact this bloke thinks he is personally the arbiter.

That because these women on this occasion wore revealing dresses, that it means that no woman actually wants to be treated as a competent professional at work. Or worse, deserves to be.

@SillyLittleBiscuit

What are your views?

At least 99% of all comments on that rag are different to mine.

what - you like the DM?
Soontobe60 · 16/07/2021 08:24

@Farwest

It's a red carpet - a publicity stunt. They are there to generate PR and press coverage for themselves and their projects.
No, they are there by order of the film companies to generate PR. The men get to wear a nice suit whilst the women get to wear a beautiful dress, which just happens to show off as much of their body as possible. It’s all about objectifying women.
ShippingNews · 16/07/2021 08:25

It's the Cannes Film Festival - on the red carpet. It's always over the top . What did you think they were going to wear ?

phoenixrosehere · 16/07/2021 08:27

I wouldn’t class ANY of those dresses as “barely there”. I was expected much worse. Other than the length in most, I don’t really see the issue with the dresses. It’s Cannes, nothing new for them and the weather is usually quite warm since it’s the South of France. Most of those dresses would trap heat if it wasn’t for the slits in them.

I will point out if we’re going to go with the age route (which is ridiculous IMO), several of the women photographed are fashion models so likely not older than 30.

Side note: I’m in love with Stella’s nude dress. Absolutely gorgeous.

Dogscanteatonions · 16/07/2021 08:29

My thoughts? It's their fucking choice.

JM10 · 16/07/2021 08:31

To be honest if I had a bum like that I'd probably want to show people too 😁

Dustdustdusty · 16/07/2021 08:35

They do it so men continue to sexualise them, which for many in this actress’s position is their route to exposure and roles. It’s age old sexism. Legs, arse, tits. It still sells.

Not everyone can be a Meryl Streep.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/07/2021 08:35

What needs to change is the expectation within the showbiz industry that to make money and remain 'relevant' a woman has to dress skimpily. Then we would see how much of this is truly an actresses choice.
I think they are kind of pressured into it and only the very successful can opt out, yet at the same time wearing skimpy clothes and being seen mainly as a sexual object is the very thing which hinders success. No one is seeing or appreciating their talent.
And then there are the women who have little talent anyway but this is a shortcut to celebrity because what they do have is an attractive body. Men are starting to become affected too with all the love island type crap that's given airtime

comebacksunshines · 16/07/2021 08:37

I think if you direct the focus onto your body and looks , then that is what people will remember you for, irrespective of your other achievements. That's entirely their choice, but you can't complain later when people applaud your body and fail to take you seriously as an actor.

Bridezillamaybe · 16/07/2021 08:37

I couldn't figure out why I recognised that woman in the purple dress then a helpful poster here reminded me she was in an early series of Made In Chelsea. They're not exactly a-list are they? She was a tosser on the programme and seems still to be based on that Instagram video of her going from tennis outfit to red carpet. I think she looks great in the dress though and is right to wear whatever she feels like.

The leather dress person (think she's Ronaldo's girlfriend) reminds me of Xena Warrior Princess.

borntobequiet · 16/07/2021 08:37

One of these days, one of them will turn up wearing nothing but stripper pasties and a g-string, with maybe a few strands of chiffon or something in the hope of fooling people that it's actually a dress.

Like this perhaps? Love Cher.

Hahaha! So the slits are air conditioning are they? Then how come the men wear suits? Not shorts and t shirts, but actual suits? Not even with side slits in the trousers.
ginghamtablecloths · 16/07/2021 08:44

Look at me. me. me. It's tacky but nothing new. In the 1960s film stars like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot wore low necklines and the (mostly) male photographers tried to get photos from the most revealing angle possible. Probably it's become more sleazy over the years and thus shows us that nothing changes.

Bumblenums1234 · 16/07/2021 08:46

If I had a body like that I would never wear clothes

Badgercity · 16/07/2021 08:46

My only opinion is that those dresses won’t age well. They remind me of late 90s early 2000s Paris Hilton type fashion.

The women are beautiful and have incredible bodies, but these dresses have fashion fad written all over them.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/07/2021 08:56

It's the Cannes film festival, not a day on the promenade at Bournemouth. Horses for courses.

borntobequiet · 16/07/2021 09:00

It’s as though they all took those curtains that puddle on the floor (v. annoying) and turned them into dresses.

nancywhitehead · 16/07/2021 09:00

Are they "acceptable"? Well who gets to say what's acceptable? They can wear what they like and I don't think that flashing a bit of bum cheek is indecent. They're not breaking any laws or doing anything wrong.

Are they appealing, creative, or interesting in any way? Not to me, no.

I don't know why they want to dress like this but there's a lot about people I don't know or particularly care about, so I just move on.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 16/07/2021 09:00

As soon as the men at these red carpet event "flaunt" their chests and arses, in "barely there" suits, I'll feel less uncomfortable that the women do it. As PPs said, it's become the expectation, that to be noticed (and I don't blame the women wanting to if it helps with their careers) women feel they need to dress like this. Yeah yeah, sex sells, and of course they can wear what they like (their bodies their choice etc) but I so wish women could be taken more seriously in the industry without having to rely on having great physiques.

krystalweedon · 16/07/2021 09:01

Me too.
butterpuffed · 16/07/2021 09:02

The dresses they're wearing are no different to what is normally worn on the red carpet/ceremonies/events .

Can't see what the fuss is, they're not 'barely there'

SoMuchForSummerLove · 16/07/2021 09:03

What's the big deal with these?

Oh god, you can see the thigh of a woman, look away men, lest ye be blinded!

It's a leg.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/07/2021 09:06

I wish the woman in the purple dress would at least stop holding it open, she is pulling it back to reveal herself in virtually every shot. It would look better if she just let it hang naturally.“

This. Why would you want to flash your bum at every opportunity, however nice it was Grin that’s not going to help your cause if you hope to be taken seriously as a professional.
Maybe I’m jealous 🤣
