Would you find this rude? Colleague leaving?

If they said “its a pleasure to announce I’m leaving”

OP posts:
unfortunateevents · 14/07/2021 17:42

Why have you come to the conclusion it’s a woman? - is this relevant to your original question, if the poster had used the pronoun he you would doubtless find something to complain about there too

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 14/07/2021 17:42

I don't think it's funny but I wouldn't give a shit how they felt about leaving.

Dyrne · 14/07/2021 17:45

Jesus Christ. Why does something have to be BAFTA award winning comedy to some people in order to find anything amusing?

OP, don’t you ever just find something mildly amusing? Do you ever have well worn “jokes” that in themselves aren’t that funny, it’s more about connecting with someone? Like if someone says “I’ve been thinking” so someone else says “Must have hurt” or “makes a change”. Not the height of comedy but you say it anyway. Likewise if a colleague dresses even the slightest bit more smart you ask “ooh, you got an interview? Who are you trying to impress?”

This is the same. We’ve given colleagues leaving cards that say “Go on then, piss off” before. They were actually very well liked and we still all keep in touch.

Unless there’s context (which you refuse to provide) about the person in question being an insufferable twat; the above social convention is why posters are interpreting it as a lighthearted comment.

LindaEllen · 14/07/2021 17:46

If they're going to a new job they're really excited about I don't see anything wrong with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

notacooldad · 14/07/2021 17:47

I'd smile and not find it rude.
It's not the joke of the year but it is amusing.

SpringRainbow · 14/07/2021 17:48

No, I wouldn’t find it rude.

I would applaud their honesty.

Longdistance · 14/07/2021 17:48

Must be a barrel of laughs at @TomForddr ‘s workplace if you can’t find that witty. I bet they’re glad they’re leaving.

Unsoliciteddeckpic · 14/07/2021 17:49

@MotionActivatedDog

Urgh. You’re the poster who couldn’t cope with your colleague saying “dirty bum” aren’t you? You have issues.
I though it was the same one. Not sure if OP is just far too sensitive to mix with people.

Or they have such little going on in their own life, they like making up stories about people being rude to share with MN.

bluebeck · 14/07/2021 17:49

I think we are getting a flavour of why OPs colleague was so happy to leave..... Grin

Adios2011 · 14/07/2021 17:50

Going by the tone of your replies OP I can completely understand why they're leaving and why it's a pleasure!

Hadjab · 14/07/2021 17:50

The fact that most do, and you don’t, suggests a sense of humour failure on your part…

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 14/07/2021 17:50

Nee wonder they’re happy to be leaving! Do you subject everything else they say to this level of analysis? It was a lighthearted joke and unless you’re being made redundant or sacked surely you would be pleased to be leaving since it’s an active choice?

Mrgrinch · 14/07/2021 17:54

OP you sound like a misery.

TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2021 17:57

DH has got a new job. When he told a few colleagues last week he said “I’m finishing on X date and I can’t bloody wait!” Knowing he’s finally getting out of that environment has made us both far less stressed.

Siepie · 14/07/2021 18:05

If I was the only colleague and they were leaving because they hated my presence I might be offended.

Any other scenario, I’d find it amusing. Most people don’t love their jobs, especially a job they’re leaving. It’s more or less what I’ve wanted to say every time I’ve left a job. I’ve just never had the nerve to say it out loud!

TopBlogger · 14/07/2021 18:07

How was it said @TomForddr? What is the back story with this employee?

Nocutenamesleft · 14/07/2021 18:10

@TomForddr

If they said “its a pleasure to announce I’m leaving”
It’s slightly rude.

But it wouldn’t bother me. Why should it?

I’m unsure why you think this is bad?

Whoever it is is obviously happy they’re leaving. That’s a good thing? Surely we want colleagues to be happy with whatever they’re doing?

Or do we want people to generally be unhappy with everything in life?!?

godmum56 · 14/07/2021 18:13

I think its funny...and if you can't tell the truth when you are leaving then when can you?
You do seem rather unhappy with your work colleagues?

CatkinToadflax · 14/07/2021 18:19

Not as bad as the leaving speech given by my mum’s colleague way back when. Her DH had got a job transfer to Thailand, so they were moving over there. Having accepted a lovely and expensive leaving present, she told everyone that she hadn’t enjoyed working with them, she wouldn’t be staying in contact with anyone and that none of them were welcome to visit her. She wasn’t joking. My mum and her other colleagues were Shock. Now that is rude.

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 14/07/2021 18:20

Was it you, OP, that said or wants to say it?

CambsAlways · 14/07/2021 18:20

Good on them , their choice, I’d laugh and wish them well

thedancingbear · 14/07/2021 18:22

To be fair, having RTFT, I can see why she’s getting out of there…

etopp · 14/07/2021 18:22

It's not exactly a 'brilliant' one-liner, but it would make me smile. I don't see the relevance of whether it was said by a man or a woman.

OP sounds bitter.

Mia184 · 14/07/2021 18:26

@Pandora64

I’d crack up if I heard that.

I once wrote a letter of resignation to a toxic boss explaining that I was leaving to become a nun, having learnt so much from working with him about the virtues of poverty, patience, and absolute obedience to the whims of a capricious, cruel and unknowable God.

Never sent it. But it made me feel better.

Leaving an unbelievably toxic boss soon, I may just write and send something similar. My boss is unbelievably horrible; there has even been an article in a local newspaper about her failure to make people stay and her horrible management style.
optimistic40 · 14/07/2021 18:28

I once announced that "I am leaving this shit hole". My colleagues loved it and it was quoted in my leaving card multiple times Grin to be fair, I was very young
