To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

While you are most certainly not unreasonable to prefer to serve bangers and mash with a veg, you are rather unreasonable to expect others to feel constrained to do the same. Bangers and mash implies nothing other than bangers and mash.

LOL, here in the US, it is almost a bragging point for some men to say, "I'm a meat and potatoes guy!" For some reason, they think this is a "manly" thing, and that vegetables are for lesser beings. Most of these men die young of heart issues, BTW.

@BeccaDigest

The name might suggest no veg but veg/salad/fruit should be included in every meal or snack that is comsuped by children and adults. There are enough people in the country overweight already, people need to be taught about a balenced diet as soon as possible.
EVERY snack as well as every meal? This virtue signalling just gets more extreme.

You really don’t think kids/adults can have a packet of crisps, choc bar or an ice cream in the sunshine without also mainlining some cabbage?

A balanced diet is balanced across the day/week, not every single thing you consume.

TheWitchOfShields · 13/07/2021 17:58

We have it with onion gravy....... surely that is a veg 🙈 lol. We do have veggies sometimes too though, depends who fancies what for tea.

1forAll74 · 13/07/2021 18:01

I always think that just bangers and mash on the plate, looks quite sad without some colour. especially if the sausages are crap, and not very enticing.. I always do some green veg, and just a little tasty gravy,as don't like the mash all swampy and too mushy.(or lumpy)

TigersandTeddybears · 13/07/2021 18:05

I'm obsessed with green vegetables so it wouldn't happen in my house!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/07/2021 18:15

obviously I grate some turnip into their porridge for breakfast and top with quinoa., do I have to spell everything out?

Wot?

No artichokes?

MerryChristmasToYou · 13/07/2021 18:23

I include a portion of fruit or veg in everything. I'm stirring my tea with a leek right now.

I make bangers and mash for my family 2 adults+5 DC out of one large potato and 3 sausages (DH has a manual job so he has a whole one) and 23 different vegetables.

Doidontimmm · 13/07/2021 18:26

I do sausages, mash, Yorkshire pudding & gravy!

Bebethany · 13/07/2021 18:36

Me too, bangers and mash but caramelised onions as well!

Having said that, when we talk of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, we expect a plateful of veg too, don’t we?

roarfeckingroarr · 13/07/2021 18:37

Two veg minimum

Bertiebiscuit · 13/07/2021 18:39

Always some veg - peas, onions - something simple but otherwise it isn't really a meal

Zwellers · 13/07/2021 18:50

This thread makes me so glad as an adult I can make my own choices and ethier not add vegetables to a meal that doesn't need them or decide not to reduce the protein/carb parts to make room for vegetables I don't actually want just because.

Newmumatlast · 13/07/2021 18:54

@Sycamoretrees

Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, exactly as it says on the tin. Veg optional.
Agree with this. I personally always add something like peas but it is optional.
whattodo2019 · 13/07/2021 18:57

Bangers and Mash means sausages and mash potato. No indication of gravy or veggies in the wording Bangers and Mash

Romney981 · 13/07/2021 19:08

Peas and fried onions too

bemusedmoose · 13/07/2021 19:15

I serve everything with veg. Usually 2-3 types (my lot love veg so often more)

Yes bangers and mash is usually just that but I would at least wants peas. I'd probably do peas, cabbage and carrots at home or whatever I had. I'm a visual eater and things have to look colourful. A plate of beige and brown just doesn't make me hungry.

twocatsandtwokids · 13/07/2021 19:16

I would expect veg! But I would expect (a bit of) veg with every meal!

NewPapaGuinea · 13/07/2021 19:25

Sausages, mash and gravy. I wouldn’t expect veg, but it would be appreciated.

MorganKitten · 13/07/2021 19:40

Nope, bangers and mash that’s it, with gravy

Gallowayan · 13/07/2021 19:44

Onion gravy.

GYNisaliarWTF · 13/07/2021 20:06

My DP made bangers and mash when I was pregnant after a request was made (with tears)

The sick bastard put sweetcorn and peas and cheese in the mash

His excuse was he wanted to ‘spice it up’

I couldn’t eat for three days and it was definitely a LTB situation.

So yes. Bangers and mash is bangers and mash (I would make broccoli for dd though tbh Grin)

MrsKoala · 13/07/2021 20:06

Without wanting to be too controversial I do swede mash with mine instead of spuds. With loads of butter and black pepper. I prefer the rootier flavour and orange colour. I roast the sausages with quartered/halved red onions so they go sticky and caramelised and I serve it with fried buttered Savoy cabbage, onion gravy, and lots of salt and pepper. I really want it now after this thread. Seems a bit seasonally inappropriate though.

Ddot · 13/07/2021 20:10

I need peas

cardibach · 13/07/2021 20:13

@Bimblybomeyelash

I think every meal Needs something green! Surely everyone at least has a bag of peas in the freezer?
Nope. I hate peas. I have other veg, both fresh and frozen, but peas are an abomination. Also sausage and mash needs onion gravy, so that’s a veg. Wouldn’t expect anything else.
