To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

My DM seems to feed my DC very differently to how she fed us. It's completely fine and I guess she feels it isn't her responsibility to get veg into them (correct). We stay there every few months for a couple of nights (or we did pre-Covid) and it's generally a sausage fest. When it was just DD1, I remember one weekend when she got cocktail sausages and bread and butter for 2 out of 3 meals. DM and DD1 were both completely happy with it - I just stay out of it and enjoy my inevitable salad :)

DamsonJammyBastard · 13/07/2021 13:00

Have you seen how many obese people there are in this country? How many kids are overweight? That isn't a problem caused by a one-off isolated non-serving of vegetables. It's because people routinely over-eat crap and under-eat the good stuff

Yes but that doesn't make your blanket statement of 'It's very unhealthy not to have any vegetables with a main course' any more true.

heidipi · 13/07/2021 13:05

I should add that when we get home we go back to a selection of either broccoli/peas/green beans/sweetcorn or chopped cucumber/pepper/carrot/sugar snaps with every single freaking meal ever.

Especially breakfast!

Breakfast is nothing without a kale-and-turnip guacamole.

Nengineer · 13/07/2021 13:11

Have you called 101?

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2021 13:14

It's very unhealthy not to have any vegetables with a main course. But then I guess not everyone likes vegetables or thinks they're a necessary part of a meal...weirdos.

I’m a vegetarian who loves vegetable. There is still no need to eat them at every single meal. It’s your diet overall that counts. Nobody is going to be eating bangers and mash as a heart food.

Nengineer · 13/07/2021 13:29

I'm a vegan and eat fairly healthily but I don't force myself to eat vegetables all the time. Actually, apart from roasted cabbage in olive oil (food of the angels) I can't remember the last time I had fresh veg.

nokidshere · 13/07/2021 13:30

Usually peas or broccoli here but no veg is fine too.

emmetgirl · 13/07/2021 13:32

I have to have broccoli too. However I like to have broccoli with everything 🤷‍♀️

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2021 13:38

Broccoli is what I end up craving after a week of being on holiday and eating out a lot!

DamsonJammyBastard · 13/07/2021 13:39

I too love broccoli. King of veg.

heidipi · 13/07/2021 13:45

@SchadenfreudePersonified well obviously I grate some turnip into their porridge for breakfast and top with quinoa., do I have to spell everything out?

Seriously though I have served boiled egg and soldiers (for tea, not breakfast) with a side of broccoli ad green beans. It doesn't get dipped.

sophiasnail · 13/07/2021 14:43

In our house, bangers and mash always includes peas, gravy and a yorkshire pudding!

BigWoollyJumpers · 13/07/2021 16:09

It may be just me, but seriously, I often wonder how people actually eat so much in one meal. Meat/fish, plus a carb, plus three veg. I honestly can't do it. So, we tend to either have meat/fish with carb, or meat/fish with one or two veg.

If we have pasta, we just have pasta.

If we have a cottage pie, we just have that.

We often have just stir fry, no noodles or rice.

PattyPan · 13/07/2021 16:19

@BigWoollyJumpers surely you just reduce the servings? Like if you can’t fit in veg with your serving of pasta just have a smaller serving of pasta so you have room Confused
I have a smaller plate that I use and my DP has a bigger one, to reflect our differing appetites and calorie needs. But on both of them the ratios are still roughly half veg, quarter carb, quarter protein.

WaltzForDebbie · 13/07/2021 16:24

I would add greens as I find a big pile of mash a bit boring. And two of my family don't really like potatoes! Confused

Gwenhwyfar · 13/07/2021 16:43

" Like if you can’t fit in veg with your serving of pasta just have a smaller serving of pasta so you have room confused"

But they don't go together at all! Unless you're serving pasta in the way French people used to do it, as a replacement for potatoes. Usually pasta comes with a sauce and if you have veg you cook it into the sauce (eg tomato) or boil it with the pasta (eg broccoli). I've never seen someone eat pasta with a sauce and veg on the side. It's not normal at all.

PattyPan · 13/07/2021 16:57

Whatever you think about them going, my point was specifically in response to Woolly’s point that she doesn’t have room for vegetables. It applies to all meals - if you don’t have room for one component then surely just have less of the other components so that you do. Totally bizarre to view that as a hurdle to eating a meal with meat, carb and veg.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 13/07/2021 17:25

My husband never serves veg with a meal and it annoys the hell out of me as I love veg and I think its good for the kids to have it. Its not hard to cook some frozen peas!

purplebunny2012 · 13/07/2021 17:26

I don't eat potato, but bangers and mash would mean just sausages and mashed potato to me

BeccaDigest · 13/07/2021 17:34

The name might suggest no veg but veg/salad/fruit should be included in every meal or snack that is comsuped by children and adults. There are enough people in the country overweight already, people need to be taught about a balenced diet as soon as possible.

JustLoveYourselfALittle · 13/07/2021 17:36

We have veg as my kids absolutely love veg. I norm do broccoli. Carrots and corn or peas.
Same with pie and mash.

Canigooutyet · 13/07/2021 17:37

Bangers and mash, steak and chips, fish and chips, macaroni cheese, etc should come just as that. Hate it when I order steak and chips and there's salad on the plate. Just what I want warm lettuce covered in gravy.

And if your really bothered about the nutritional intake mincers aren't that expensive. I have one as I hate the taste of pork a d trying to find non pork is hard.

Seahorsemama · 13/07/2021 17:40

I usually throw in a Yorkshire pud

LittleMissPlant · 13/07/2021 17:40

We always have veg and gravy with sausage and mash.
I honestly can’t imagine preparing a meal without any fruit or veg with it. But…I know plenty of others that do and that’s their choice
