To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

* I wouldn't expect vegetables with my fish and chips or chicken curry and rice either.*

If I make fish and chips at home o do peas, broccoli and kale with it.

If I make a chicken curry if would have mushrooms, peppers, onions, usually cauliflower or sweet potato as well.

You are supposed to eat 7 fruit and vegetables a day.

KirstenBlest · 12/07/2021 19:09

@Spanielstail, I easily eat 7 portions of fruit and veg a day but if I have chips then it has to be chips with nothing but a hearty sprinkle of salt or if I'm lucky some bread and butter.

Spanielstail · 12/07/2021 19:12

Salt and vinegar on chips surely!!

I think it's different if you do normally eat a lot of veg naturally in the day but if not you need to pack out meals with as much veg as you can.

Highly coincidentally, husband has just made us sausage and mash with cauliflower, brocolli, carrot and kale.

WineInTheBlood · 12/07/2021 19:12

I would find this weird too. I always have at least peas.... and it has to be onion gravy for me. Proper comfort food 😋

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/07/2021 19:14

I always serve peas, gravy/onion gravy and mint sauce with mine.

Sometimes I swap the mashed potato for mashed carrot and Swede

Fish and chips needs mushy peas surely?

And chicken curry usually has veggies in it - onion, tomatoes etc.

WheresMySnackPack · 12/07/2021 19:15

I do veg for DS but DP won't touch veg. As long as it's eaten I couldn't care less!

Boood · 12/07/2021 19:16

YANBU to think that there should be vegetables. YABU to think that peas and broccoli go with sausages and mash- it needs to be root vegetables not green. It really annoys me when vegetables are treated as one big amorphous ingredient that goes with everything.

Goatinthegarden · 12/07/2021 19:17
@Goatinthegarden, look at the ingredients of the veggie sausages.

I hadn't really thought about them until a colleague remarked that he was surprised that I ate processed food.

They are ultra processed.
I know they’re processed, but having a processed item for my evening meal occasionally won’t kill me or DH, particularly when we’re filling up on plenty of greens at the same time. I cook from scratch most days, I easily eat more than ten different portions of fruit/veg most days and I run and cycle. I’m fit and healthy, the odd veggie sausage won’t kill me.

The crisps and gin and ice cream and chocolate, that I also eat, is another matter...

Or just some people prefer peas with their bangers and mash?
roguetomato · 12/07/2021 19:19

In my country, potatoes are considered vegetable.

Essentialironingwater · 12/07/2021 19:24

YANBU, I think all these people banging on about meat curry alone or fish and chips are bonkers too. Would be surprised if I ordered fish and chips in a pub and it came without peas, spag bol we have salad, we eat veggie curries - it's not a meal without a vegetable. Fish and chips without veg by the sea in paper, maybe, but I've never had a veg-less meal in someone's home.

Boood · 12/07/2021 19:24

They don’t go. Sausages and mash is robust winter comfort food. They need robust winter vegetables to go with them, and that’s root vegetables or cabbage. Just randomly plonking any old veg on a plate because they’ve got vitamins in so they’ll do is crap cooking and the reason lots of people don’t like vegetables and have a boring, limited diet. They’re supposed to be a part of the dish, not a one-size-fits-all supplement.

I think they go. I like peas in my mash, stops the buggers from skittering off my fork :D

I also think that a one size fits all supplement is fine, not everybody is gourmet cooking all the time, and peas are a great one size fits all supplement!

Fish & Chips? Peas go fine
Pie and chips or mash? Peas
Sausage and mash? Peas
Family member or guest is very picky? There's a good chance they will eat peas.

I have been disappointed when I've eaten out and sausage and mash hasn't been accompanied by veg. I also can't stand the (very different type of establishment) type of place where they don't serve the expensive meal with veg, you have to pay extra for creamed spinach or some nonsense that doesn't go with your meal.

Roasted onions. That's my favourite veg to have with sausage and mash. Always with gravy, but not onion gravy (I know...) .. Mixed roasted veg also very acceptable, as are peas, or broccoli/carrots/cauli at a push.

UmamiMammy · 12/07/2021 19:33

I would always serve sausage and mash with either veg and gravy or baked beans!

But I serve every meal with salad or veg, my mother taught me that every meal needs colour.........

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 19:34

They don’t go

Sausages, mash, peas and gravy is an absolutely classic combination.

You might not enjoy it but it’s not at all controversial food pairing.

MrsKoala · 12/07/2021 19:34

I would think all meals imply a side veg. If I say we're having toad in the hole, fish pie, shepherds pie, moussaka, lasagne etc they all come with veg or salad. Never just served on their own. Just because you don't say the veg it would always be assumed here.

I once went to a gastropub and ordered bangers and mash and asked what veg it came with. They said none. I asked if it could and they said no because all the veg is portioned up to go with particular meals like the roasts and the fish and chips etc and bangers and mash doesn't have any accompaniment. So clearly it's a thing for some. But not having veg with my dinner is not a thing for me.

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:35

Sausage and mash isn't pretending to be a particularly healthy, unprocessed meal though. It's bog standard comfort food pub grub, and it's fine to have occasionally as part of a balanced diet.

lynsey91 · 12/07/2021 19:45

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand

So you and your friends never eat a meat curry with rice and maybe a bread?

I'm pescetarian and only really eat veg curries these days, but even when I ate meat I always put veg in the sauce. Onions, tomatoes, peppers, chickpeas, spinach etc. At a curry house, people usually share veg side dishes etc.

You must know that Indian cuisine is really vegetagle orientated, surely? Most Hindus are vegetarian.

Me and DH are vegetarian so only ever eat veg curries either at home or in a restaurant. We usually add chickpeas and/or lentils to the ones we make.

One of the reasons we both love indian food is that it is so veggie friendly but I know many people who won't eat a curry that doesn't have meat in it.

I know though that quite a few of our friends and my sister only have a meat curry and rice and bread. They don't get a veg side dish and aren't usually interested in sharing any of ours if we get one

KirstenBlest · 12/07/2021 19:47

It's a one in a while treat, like chips are.

Sausage and mash isn't pretending to be healthy, but veggie sausages are.

Nothing wrong with proper pub grub as an occasional treat.

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2021 20:01

My mum would be helpless with laughter if she saw bangers and mash described as a treat. It was a staple when I was a child because it was cheap and cheerful.

Neondisco · 12/07/2021 20:05

I wouldn't make it without veg. (I'm vegetarian so it's veg sausage for me too)

But I wouldn't think it was wild if it had no veg.

KirstenBlest · 12/07/2021 20:05

I didn't understand why anyone ate mashed potatoes until I realised that they didn't eat potatoes that had been boiled then mashed, but that had had things like butter added.

ElephantOfRisk · 12/07/2021 20:13

If you don't have peas with mash, how do you make pea hedgehogs? And yes, I think every parent in the land called broccoli "trees" long before celebrities managed to believe that it was their idea. MY DSs had a fight over broccoli at a carvery when they were toddlers, wish they'd still eat it now.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/07/2021 20:15

"If I make fish and chips at home o do peas, broccoli and kale with it."

OMG. You don't understand fish and chips.
